News: Rotherham flood scheme in line for regeneration award

By

The successful £15m first phase of the Flood Alleviation Scheme has been named as a finalist in the 2010 Waterways Renaissance Awards.

The awards celebrate exemplary regeneration projects, successful environmental schemes and innovative community initiatives that contribute to the renaissance of the UK's inland waterways. They are organised by the British Urban Regeneration Association (BURA) and The Waterways Trust.

The Rotherham scheme is the only finalist in the flood risk management catergory sponsored by Halcrow and is up against schemes in Norfolk and Merseyside in the natural environment catergory sponsored by DEFRA.

The first phase of the scheme at Templeborough was completed on time and has gone a long way to protect local businesses, residents and the massive Rotherham Renaissance programme for the town centre.

Last year The Wildlife Trust for Sheffield and Rotherham launched the wetlands area at Centenary Riverside cerated by the scheme.

Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council lead the scheme working together with the Environment Agency, Yorkshire Forward and the Wildlife Trust for Sheffield & Rotherham. The scheme was supported by funding from South Yorkshire Objective 1, Yorkshire Forward, the Environment Agency and Rotherham MBC. Volker Stevin was the main contractor.
