News: Rotherham companies seize export opportunities

By

Rotherham companies working with UK Trade & Investment Yorkshire and Humber (UKTI Y&H), seized export opportunities between April 2010 to March 2011, increasing the value of their international trade by £3.3m.

UKTI Y&H, the regional organisation which promotes international trade and encourages foreign direct investment into the UK, worked with 87 companies in Rotherham, creating or safeguarding 32 jobs.

The United States and Germany remain Yorkshire & the Humber's biggest overseas markets, with France and Ireland accounting for a substantial share of export earnings. China continues to be a growth market – maintaining its position in the top 10 export markets by value for 2010.

Philip Kelly, head of international trade at UKTI Y&H, said: "There is huge potential for Yorkshire companies in a wide range of sectors to take advantage of the growth in both emerging and traditional economies.

"Although the UK economy is in recession, there are many opportunities for companies, with the right capabilities and determination, to grow their businesses – international trade has never been a more attractive prospect to many of our regions companies."

Rotherham companies that have strong exports include VO4HOME, Hydra Mining Tools International, Martek Marine, Inditherm and MTL Group. AESSEAL and SP Containers were both awarded the Queen's Award for Enterprise 2011 for international trade.

In Rotherham, companies looking to export are also getting help through the "Soft Landings Zone" (SLZ) project managed by Rotherham Investment & Development Office (RiDO) and funded from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).

In addition to helping overseas companies that are looking to establish operations in the UK, the SLZ project works with local companies through accelerated support programmes to develop ideas that have true potential to create export focused businesses.
