News: Patchwork Pig receives kickstart funding
Rotherham gift shop, Patchwork Pig, received a kickstart grant to enable the town centre store to open in time for Christmas.
Charlotte Schothern, 21, from central Rotherham, opened Patchwork Pig on the High Street in October with help from funding she received from UK Steel's Kickstart Fund, a business finance scheme that provides grants of up to £500 to start-up businesses to purchase essential equipment and or services that can get them trading.
UK Steel Enterprise (UKSE) is a wholly owned subsidiary of Tata Steel. Its main investment fund provides business finance in amounts from £25,000 up to £750,000 to companies in South Yorkshire and other areas affected by changes in the steel industry.
Charlotte, said: "A lot of town centres are full of chain stores offering the same thing – I wanted to provide people with something different. There are similar things to what I have in the town but none match them. People are coming to me because they know they can find something that not everyone else will have for special occasions."
Charlotte says that if it was not for the funding from UK Steel Enterprise she could not have started trading: "I used the cash from UK Steel to pay for my legal fees and to get my trademark sorted. Both are expensive but necessary and without the lawyers looking at my lease I could not have opened. The grant was really helpful and I'm very grateful to UK Steel for its support."
Allan Wood, Regional Executive for UK Steel Enterprise added: "Charlotte clearly loves what she is doing and importantly has researched her market. Her shop offers something very different which is essential when it comes to retail. We wish her all the best for the future and expect to see her become a successful Rotherham entrepreneur."
UK Steel Enterprise has set aside finance from its Kickstart Fund to target 30 young people in Rotherham with small scale funding that can make all the difference when it comes to starting a new business.
