News: Wharncliffe restaurant officially opened

By

A top football official has officially opened the refurbished Wharncliffe restaurant in Rotherham town centre.

Rotherham's Howard Webb, MBE, the Mayor and Mayoress of Rotherham, loyal customers and suppliers, joined with staff and students to mark the occasion.

Part of a £2.4m scheme at the town centre campus, boosted by a £800K grant from the Skills Funding Agency, Rotherham College of Arts and Technology (RCAT) has developed its Catering and Hospitality Department with a new exterior and refurbished interior of the restaurant.

The redevelopment has created a new restaurant on Percy Street that is all on one level allowing more flexibility for bar, restaurant, coffee bar, banqueting and conference type uses.

Behind the scenes, all the kitchens have been enhanced with additional industry standard equipment. The developments are enabling the industry-professional tutors to further enhance the experience of the college's catering and hospitality students.

Gill Alton, principal and chief executive at RCAT, said: "We are delighted to be able to invest in state of the art facilities which underpin the excellent training offered at Rotherham College. It is important that students have an opportunity to work with industry standard facilities and resources."
Catering students showcased the new kitchen facilities which now include a smoking room and pastry kitchen.

Howard Webb said: "I'm taken aback by what a fantastic facility it actually is. It's really modern and it's a really pleasant place to be. I feel really proud that I've been asked to come down here and it's clearly going to be a wonderful new asset for the town of Rotherham.

"The catering and service industry is huge and developing. People are in to food more than ever before and it's an opportunity for young people in Rotherham to use this facility as a way of developing their skills that they can then take in to the big wide world, in to the work place. It's quite a unique opportunity; I can't imagine that this is a place that’s replicated everywhere."

Open to the public Monday to Friday, The Wharncliffe serves a range of teas and coffees, breakfast, lunches and three course meals. It has recently joined in partnership with the nearby Rotherham Theatres to offer two course pre-theatre dining for £7.50.
