News: Firm win Environmental Awards for Rotherham site

The Rotherham brick works of Huddersfield landscape company, Marshalls have been awarded the International Green Apple Award 2007 for environmental best practice. Presented by David Bellamy, the firm had been recognised for the success of the project to support wildlife at its site in Maltby and for the company’s “never-ending efforts to adapt their working practices to benefit the environment." Last month the firm were awarded The Wildlife Trusts’ Biodiversity Benchmark presented by Brian Blessed.

News: Wildgoose to build next Business Incubation Centre in Rotherham

Rotherham Investment & Development Office, the regeneration arm of Rotherham Council, have selected Chesterfield firm Wildgoose Construction to build a new £3.3 million Business Incubation Centre in Dinnington. The building will house up to 40 companies and contain environmentally-friendly features including the use of glass to make the most of natural light and a wood-chip burning boiler.

News: Rotherham to have the first building in the UK to be powered by wind and hydrogen

The £8.7m Environmental Energy Technology Centre (EETC) at the Advanced Manufacturing Park in Rotherham will have a wind turbine installed by North East company, TNEI to generate hydrogen gas which will be stored and then converted into electricity. It is the first of its kind on this scale – where conventional wind energy will be used on site to generate hydrogen. The EETC opens next year as an entirely energy self-sufficient centre which will house more than 30 businesses working in the renewable energy industry.

News: Safety Kleen set to expand in Rotherham

Waste business, Safety Kleen are set to expand their Dinnington premises which will enable them to handle around 18,000 tonnes of hazardous and non-hazardous waste a year. The site on the Todwick Road Industrial Estate will collect and clean waste products with the aim of recycling and refurbishing them. The site is expected to contribute to the continued economic expansion of Rotherham.

Helen West OBE has been appointed chief executive of the new Yorkshire and Humber regional Business Link. The new Business Link service provider, Y&H IDB won the £29m-a-year contract to deliver a new regional Business Link service from April next year. The head office of the South Yorkshire operations will be located in Barnsley and there will be no regional office in Rotherham.

News: Widening of M1 in Rotherham nears completion

The new M1 northbound carriageway between junctions 31 to 32 in Rotherham fully re−opened last weekend and the new southbound lanes are expected to be finished before Christmas. The £20m road-widening scheme is part of a larger project to increase traffic capacity on the M1 nationally and on the M62 in West Yorkshire.

Baird Capital Partner Europe has invested £12m in ESS Steel Holdings, a manufacturer of engineered components for the oil industry. The Yorkshire Bank has provided a £35m funding package, and the mangement team, £9m to complete the MBO. In the current year, the group will generate sales of £34m. The head office and machining plant of the business is based in Sheffield with the distribution operations in Rotherham.

The new Agency will bring together the housing and regeneration delivery functions of the Housing Corporation, English Partnerships and the Department for Communities and Local Government. Having spent ten years as a key player in the regeneration of Sheffield he will start his new job in March 2008.

The Winter 2007 issue highlights the small and medium sized companies that have benefited from the fund including Rotherham companies Hydra Mining Tools and Dukeries Aviation. Hydra Mining Tools have used a £50,000 loan to tap into the Chinese market and Dukeries Aviation used a £30,000 loan to rebuild a hangar and workshop at Netherthorpe Airfield.

News: Another top business award for Rotherham's AESSEAL

Chris Rea, the chief executive of Rotherham-based AES Engineering has won The Business Leader of the Year Award at the recent Yorkshire Post Business Awards. AES is a world leader in the mechanical sealing industry whose mechanical seals are used in pumps and rotating equipment to prevent liquids and gases from escaping into the environment. The company has 60 branches in 30 countries, employing more than 900 people. In an interview with the newspaper, Mr Rea discussed the start of a £7m investment into a new technology centre in the Rotherham and the innovative products that AES has produced.

News: Rotherham students win national enterprise award

Youngsters from Wickersley Comprehensive in Rotherham won the schools section in the national finals of the Make Your Mark Challenge, the UK's largest enterprise competition. The team's idea was Truck Trackers, an organisation designed to link small businesses that need to deliver their goods but cannot fill an entire truck. Judges were so impressed with the idea that they were awarded the £3,000 first prize, along with £100-worth of vouchers for every team member.

News: Steel firm cleans up for salmon

The installation of a new £1m water treatment plant to reduce pollution from the Corus steel plant at Aldwarke, Rotherham has led to praise from anglers. Only the second salmon caught by rod and line in the last 50 years was caught further down the River Don recently, a sign of excellent water quality. The steelworks use huge amounts of water, extracted from rivers, to help cool machinery exposed to temperatures of up to 1,700 degrees.

AES Engineering has been named Company of the Year at the CBI's annual Growing Business Awards. In order to win its latest accolade, AES had to demonstrate it was "an outstanding business whose growth, ambition and quality of management had enabled it to out-perform its peers financially and had delivered on a compelling business strategy." The mechanical seal manufacturer is one of Rotherham's most recognised businesses after being named Business of the Year by the British Chambers of Commerce and Britain's best manufacturer in the Institution of Mechanical Engineers' (IMechE) prestigious Manufacturing Excellence Awards in 2006. In the same year, founder and managing director Chris Rea was named Northern Entrepreneur of the Year and awarded the title 'Master Entrepreneur'.

Millgate provides a range of services, including a maintenance, hardware, software, communications, networking, structured cabling and website design and implementation. The Rotherham based Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre has won £500,000- backing from the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council to fund MANTRA – the MANufacturing TRAnsporter, enabling knowledge developed within the AMRC to reach many more companies. It will also visit schools to encourage pupils to consider science and engineering careers. Boeing’s Bart Moenster, who is AMRC chairman, said: “The AMRC is without doubt the most successful university-based knowledge transfer organisation to have been established in recent years."

News: Walls to come alive at £5m business centre

Details of a £5m start-up business centre, the latest flagship initiative by Rotherham Investment & Development Office (RiDO), the council’s regeneration arm, which will create a dynamic landmark right in the heart of the town’s new advanced manufacturing and high-tech sectors. Situated near to Magna at Templeborough, the development will have ‘living walls’, created by steel trelliswork with climbing plants, and a green roof. Due to open in April 2008, it will include a number of offices and small workshops that will be ideal for start-ups from high-growth sectors, such as creative and digital, as well as advanced metals and manufacturing.
