News: Traffic-free plans for proposed development

By

Orgreave residents have been given a tour of the proposed Waverley community development by Richard Pett, rights of way officer at Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council, who provided information on how cyclists, walkers and horse riders are set to benefit from almost 25 kilometres of new and restored mixed-use pathways in and around the proposed 741 acre development. The proposals, which would link neighbouring communities, towns and cities, could benefit from a multi-user bridge over the Parkway, a two-kilometre lakeside Easy Going Trail and the anticipated Trans Pennine link into Sheffield. John Dunshea, head of the Sheffield office at planning consultants for UK Coal, Atisreal, said: "The location of Waverley means it is ideally placed for access to Sheffield, Rotherham, the surrounding areas and the countryside. "Creating a variety of avenues for people to get from A to B as well as providing options for multiple needs is one of the key principles of developing a sustainable community and something we feel strongly about successfully achieving. "So by creating a network of pathways that complement existing routes such as the Trans Pennine Trail, residents on the outskirts of Sheffield and Rotherham will have a great option to cycle to work." Planning permission for the new community will be submitted later this summer.

News: Confident outlook from YES! developer

By

The latest financial results from Oak Holdings, the developers behind the £390m leisure and entertainment based resort in Rotherham, highlight the progress being made and the confident outlook for the future of the project. The Development Agreement, including the terms of the 250 year lease, is scheduled to be considered by the Cabinet of Rotherham Council (the landowners) today, following extensive negotiations between the parties and their advisers. This will raise the company's value as it considers a development loan to see the project to completion. Oak Holdings chairman Malcolm Savage said: "Despite the current economic climate, the Board remains confident that the Company can approach the future with confidence. We believe that the fundamental concept of the YES! Project will be attractive to property investors and, as such, the Board will primarily devote its energies and resources to ensuring the successful completion of the project." The YES! Project is set to create 3,000 permanent jobs and 2,000 construction jobs in creating a 1.2 million sq ft covered fully integrated mixed-use leisure and entertainment based resort, activity and conference destination on a 327-acre site adjacent to Rother Valley Country Park. The site could expect to see contractor activity before the end of the year. Oak chief executive Steve Lewis said: "Today’s decision cements our ability to deliver this new and innovative scheme. It allows us to move the project into its next phases, particularly in respect of discussions with potential tenants, who will be heartened by the Cabinet’s approval." The council’s strategic director for Environment & Development Services, Karl Battersby, said: "This is a great step forward for the council, for Oak Holdings – and for the people and economy of Rotherham. We and the developers can now press ahead and turn the vision of this fantastic leisure, entertainment and sports complex into reality. "That means not just that the project will be available for people to enjoy, but also that there are up to 3,000 jobs in the pipeline, which is excellent news for people in Rotherham and a much wider area. News: Relishing the regional link up

By

Creative Sheffield report that the link up between Sheffield's famous Henderson's Relish and Rotherham based Yorkshire Crisps has led to the newly launched crisps becoming one of the company’s top selling flavours. The managing director of Yorkshire Crisps in Waleswood, Tony Bishop said: "The success of the flavour is owed to the great taste of Henderson’s Relish, combined with our quality potatoes and commitment to only use completely natural flavours. The response from retailers has been overwhelming, and we are expecting some orders from larger nationwide companies in the next few months." Yorkshire Crisps’ potato farmer Simon Hinchliffe has been providing the company with potatoes for over three years, and presents the Henderson’s flavour to his farm visitors. Simon comments: "We jumped at the chance to supply an end-user directly, as we have felt disconnected from the food chain. In the past we have dealt with large, faceless corporations, but with Yorkshire Crisps we know what is produced from our crop, and where they are sold. We deliver on tractors straight from our field to the nearby Yorkshire Crisps factory. We’re delighted to be associated with Yorkshire Crisps, it’s a great product and I am proud that they are made out of our potatoes."

"Sq Ft" describes how Rotherham is thriving, with land being developed, office, commercial and retail space being created. News: Region can weather economic storm

By

The banking team at South Yorkshire's leading law firm DLA Piper report strong corporate activity over the first half of the year, much of which is locally generated. Since January the banking team, led by partner Tim Littler, has been involved in transactions ranging in value from £1m to £75m. Tim said: "While the national media is currently full of economic doom and gloom stories, particularly relating to the lack of availability of finance and its effect on the property and housebuilding sectors, we have had a very busy period, mainly with local corporate deals reflecting a healthy level of activity in the regional market. "I think this reflects the fact that there is still a healthy manufacturing base in Sheffield. A lot of companies locally went to the wall in the 1980s and early 1990s and the ones that are left are lean, efficient and well run with strong order books from exploiting international markets. "The marketplace may be challenging but these companies still need to borrow money for general expansion or require funding for trading opportunities or making acquisitions." DLA Piper's Sheffield office has just been named Dealmaking Firm of the Year and Corporate Law Firm of the Year at the prestigious South Yorkshire Dealmakers Dinner.
