News: Rotherham Enterprise helps young entrepreneur see the light

By

Rotherham Enterprise has helped a young entrepreneur establish her own business just three days after being made redundant.

Deborah Bailey, 28, of Wath upon Dearne, set up successful exhibition lighting manufacturing company, Aardvark Display Lighting, within 72 hours of being laid off from her management job at a Sheffield light specialists.

The broadcasting and digital communications graduate spent ten years at Transform Lighting Ltd, running the retail side of the business, until bosses announced it was to cease trading, due to the tough economic climate.

Deborah managed to strike a deal with administrators, persuading them to sell her the company's existing leftover stock so she could set up her own enterprise. Within three days she was pulling in orders from the company's old client base, but urgently needed a workshop to produce her goods.

Deborah said: "After gaining the old stock from administrators, I read lighting manufacturing instruction books and redirected the old store's number to my phone so I was receiving all the orders, but without a workplace to create the light fittings I was in a difficult position."

The young entrepreneur approached Rotherham Enterprise, who through Rotherham Youth Enterprise (RYE), provided a workshop unit at Century Business Centre rent free for six months.

"We are very lucky to have a project like Rotherham Enterprise who were able to provide the help and support I needed to set my business up.

"I now sell my spotlights to suppliers for exhibitions all over the country, including spotlights in Windsor castle and for BMW showcases. I absolutely love coming to work and although setting up was manic, I had nothing to lose and the help I received from Rotherham Enterprise has been essential."

Jackie Frost, from Rotherham Enterprise said: "Deborah's business credibility, determination and ability to make key opportunity seizing decisions, has been fundamental to the brilliant success of her company.

"We are thrilled to have been able to help Deborah out with her new enterprise by offering one of our workshops to use until she becomes fully established and wish her all the best with what we are sure will be a bright future."
