News: Portion of pay packets produces £28,200 for Rotherham Hospice
A simple idea to donate part of a day's pay has raised much needed money for Rotherham Hospice.
The only adult hospice in Rotherham for the people of Rotherham, Rotherham Hospice is an independent charity and must raise significant sums of money each year in order to pay for the quality care provided free of charge to patients, their families and carers. The charity needs £5m a year with £2.2m needed to be raised each year through voluntary support.
Bosses at Horbury Group on South Grove, garage door specialists JB Doors and Alluguard in Parkgate asked employees if they would be happy to donate a portion of their March 1 pay to the hospice.
They responded so magnificently, offering from an hour to a full day's wage, their bosses made huge company donations too.
Trevor Wragg, founder and MD of Horbury Group, interiors subcontractors for the construction industry, gave up a day of his pay - and doubled the £9,100 raised by his staff. Company chairman David Williams donated an additional £5,000, bringing Horbury's total donation to a staggering £23,200.
Trevor said: "David has volunteered at the hospice for several years and one of our team suggested more of us could work for the hospice in the virtual sense. JB Doors and Alluguard MD Darren Baker loved the idea and put it to his staff too."
Darren Baker added: "I am so proud of my staff. I also run Wickersley restaurant the Olive Lounge and every one of my 30 employees voluntarily took part. No one gave less than two hours of pay. Their giving totalled £2,500, which will go straight from the payroll to the hospice, and I rounded it up to £5,000. I couldn't believe how simple it was to raise such a large amount. We named it "Donate a day for cancer.""
Darren's staff are used to his charity fundraising. Over the last ten years he has raised £350,000 for Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity by staging an annual black-tie ball.
Horbury Group has supported charities throughout its 23 years and both Trevor and Darren said this fundraiser has been the easiest they have ever staged.
Trevor added: "All we needed to do for this was to wield a pen. Darren and I would urge any company to follow suit and encourage their workers to support a place that has been providing superb end of life care for two decades.
"Across the four companies in Horbury Group, 72 people gave up half a day or a full day of pay. That's a huge amount for people with mortgages and holidays to pay for. Amazingly some of them are as far away as London. They joined in to support a hospice they will never see."
The idea worked so well hospice bosses are considering rolling it out as a major fundraiser on September 9 - the hospice's 20th anniversary.
Christopher Duff, chief executive at Rotherham Hospice, said: "We are overwhelmed by the kindness shown by these amazing employees who willingly gave up some of their hard-earned wages. If other companies took up this brilliantly simple idea it would be a major fundraiser for the hospice, which needs to raise £2.2m a year through voluntary support to serve people from every part of Rotherham in their time of need."
