News: Surgical technology patented by Rotherham firm

By

The Star reports on the developments of Rotherham surgical specialists, Comis Orthopaedics. Working with expert, Dr Gursharan Singh Chana, consultant at the Minimal Invasive Hip Centre in Birmingham, Comis have developed the surgical tools behind a revolutionary technique which more than halves the size of incision needed in surgery on a damaged hip. Comis Orthopaedics' managing director, Shaun Palmer, told The Star: "Hip resurfacing offers an alternative to replacing the entire hip joint which requires a large amount of bone removal. "Resurfacing surgery allows the patient to resume their life normally, and is particularly beneficial to those who regularly exercise. Mr Chana's work is an important breakthrough." Through a partnership with Howard Lock Intellectual Property of Killamarsh, Comis has filed patent applications to protect the surgical tools needed for the procedure, which reduces the incision needed from 25cm to 10cm. Comis have recently moved to the Ignite @ Magna development at Templeborough.
