News: OnDemand bus service aims to reconnect Rotherham

Residents of parts of Rotherham with limited access to scheduled bus services are being targeted by a new flexible public transport service to connect them to employment, education, healthcare, and retail.

Rothbiz reported last year that South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA) was looking to launch a pilot project around demand responsive transport as part of its work to address connectivity issues across the region following the Mayor’s decision to take control of the buses.

Using £0.95m from the government's Transport Innovation Fund (TIF), SYMCA has appointed technology partner Via for the pilot that will begin operating from 3 August for 12 months across parts of Doncaster and Rotherham. 

The service introduces a new way of travelling, allowing passengers to book shared bus journeys through the OnDemand app up to one week in advance or by phone, with no fixed routes or timetables. 

Designed to improve connections in areas where traditional services are limited, OnDemand will help people access jobs, education, healthcare and key destinations across the region. Unlike conventional bus routes, OnDemand uses intelligent technology to group passengers travelling in the same direction, offering a flexible, efficient and affordable service. 

Fares will start from £3 per journey, with concessions and discounts available, and the service will run Monday to Saturday between 5am and 6pm.  Importantly, the new service has been designed to complement not replace the existing public transport network, helping more people connect to buses, trams and trains across South Yorkshire.

The Rotherham areas included in the OnDemand area are Waverley, Ulley, Morthern, Thurcroft, Brookhouse, Dinnington, Firbeck, Letwell, Todwick, Woodsetts, Thorpe Salvin and Harthill.

Users can travel within the designated operating zone. but for those travelling beyond the zone, OnDemand can connect passengers to designated interchange hubs (Dinnington, Rotherham Hospital, Rotherham town centre, Crystal Peaks) for onward travel using buses, trams or rail services.

Cllr Chris Read, Leader of Rotherham Council, said:  “It’s great to see this pilot becoming a reality. We know that as bus services have reduced in recent decades, the impact of that has been particularly felt in more rural areas. The way that public transport operates had got to change. That’s why we wanted to prioritise this opportunity for communities to the south of our borough, complementing and enhancing existing public transport, but also offering a flexibility that traditional bus services just can’t provide. 

“So if you’re at home in Todwick or Brookhouse, for example, and you need to get to the Tanyard, Rotherham Hospital or Meadowhall and back, this service provides a new convenient way to do that. I hope that people will give it a go, and their experiences will certainly help us to shape the future of public transport in the borough.”

News: New demand responsive transport services to be piloted in Rotherham

Connectivity across Rotherham could be improved by innovative new demand responsive public transport services.

South Yorkshire’s Mayor Oliver Coppard confirmed recently that the region’s first publicly controlled buses will begin operating in Doncaster and most of Sheffield from September 2027. The rollout will continue in Barnsley and Rotherham by the end of 2028, with the rest of Sheffield following in 2029.

Since the Mayor’s decision to take control of the buses in March 2025, South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA) has been working at pace to reverse nearly 40 years of deregulation and put the public back at the heart of public transport. That means SYMCA will control the bus routes, timetables, fares, ticket options and quality standards and will be able to reinvest profits back into improving services.

As part of its work to address connectivity issues across the region, SYMCA is looking to launch a pilot project next year around demand responsive transport.

Demand responsive transport is a flexible service that provides shared transport to users who specify their desired location and time of pick-up and drop-off. It can complement fixed route public transport services and improve mobility in low-density areas and at low-demand times of day.

Services run without a set timetable and typically use smaller vehicles than fixed route bus services. Dial-a-ride minibus services scheduled through advance bookings are a traditional example. Dynamic schemes enable routes to be adjusted in real time to accommodate new pick-up requests, often made minutes in advance.

SYMCA has begun tapping up the private sector for a provider to supply and operate the software for, and run pilot services, in two separate zones - one in Doncaster and one in Rotherham.

Tender documents explain that the £1.7m pilot scheme would run from April 2026 to March 2027 and involve a minimum of two wheelchair accessible vehicles per zone, running 12 hours a day (6:00-18:00), Monday to Saturday (excluding most Bank Holidays).

The booking system would involve app and phone booking, in real-time and in advance, plus route optimisation.

Rotherham Community Transport has charity status and a fleet of over 30 vehicles and is already offering a number of Door 2 Door services such as its Dial-A-Ride and Shopper Bus.

News: IntelliAM lands major multi-site AI deal with Hovis

Rotherham tech firm IntelliAM has announced a major expansion of its commercial partnership with iconic bakery brand, Hovis Limited.

With offices in Dinnington, IntelliAM uses AI models to proactively increase operating efficiency of the existing assets of the company's manufacturing clients.

The expanded contract – which represents a ninefold increase on the original agreement – will see full deployment of the IntelliAM platform across multiple manufacturing sites. It will also include integration of IntelliAM smart sensor interfaces across production lines, alongside ongoing consultancy services to drive measurable gains in reliability, productivity, and asset availability.

The anticipated productivity improvements are expected to deliver full return on investment within the first year, accelerating Hovis's journey towards AI-powered, proactive manufacturing excellence.

In September 2024, IntelliAM secured an initial contract with Hovis to deliver reliability consultancy services across three key sites. The project successfully delivered gap analyses, criticality assessments, and tailored maintenance strategies that enabled targeted, data-driven improvements to production reliability.

Aquis-listed IntelliAM, founded in 2023 and built on the strong technical foundations of Dinnington-based 53 Degrees North, works with a quarter of the world's top 100 FMCGs and half of the top 12 food and beverage manufacturers.

The company was named 'Manufacturing Tech Company of the Year' at the 2025 Business Tech Awards.

News: Rotherham tech startups offered support to validate innovative ideas

South Yorkshire tech startups are being offered support to validate their innovative ideas through a new incentive programme launched to boost the region’s tech startups.

The support comes from the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority funded TECH SY project, which is offering either financial grants or support from a specialist consultancy to promising startups in South Yorkshire as part of the wider aim to help scale up our tech ecosystem.

The Idea Validation Grant provides up to £2,500 of direct financial support, OR up to £5,000 worth of idea validation support. This new programme aims to provide financial assistance and mentoring to help companies validate business ideas, ensuring their feasibility and potential for success, before they embark on significant product development.

Businesses will be able to use the funding for activities such as market research and prototyping. Alternatively, recipients can receive mentoring via a partnership with experienced founders from Trove Ventures, as well as access to a network of industry experts across the region.

Since its launch last year, TECH SY have been analysing data on the startup ecosystem in the region and working with industry leaders and stakeholders to develop pilot programmes that help grow the local digital economy. The programme aims to kickstart the next evolution of tech startups in South Yorkshire by empowering entrepreneurs with funding and support to validate their business concepts.

News: Rotherham tech firm targets US

A Rotherham-based software company has secured its first order in the USA and entered a strategic partnership to target the country's manufacturing sector.

With offices in Dinnington, IntelliAM uses AI models to proactively increase operating efficiency of the existing assets of the company's manufacturing clients.

IntelliAM uses machine learning and AI solutions to tap into billions of manufacturing data points to boost productivity and reduce operating costs for customers which include Muller, Mars, ADM, Weetabix, and Hovis.

An order has recently been received for IntelliAM AI platform services and sensor supplies from a high-quality food manufacturer in the USA for three of its major manufacturing sites.

The order provides for IntelliAM AI to supply software, technology support and sensors on-site which will enable the manufacturer to maximise its manufacturing efficiencies and return on investment. The order covers an initial period of 12 months.

Tom Clayton, CEO of IntelliAM AI, said: "This is an important new customer for IntelliAM and our first in the USA. Our respective teams have been working closely together to develop a bespoke programme of enhanced asset care deploying our AI and machine learning platforms for the three manufacturing sites."

In a bid to accelerate growth in the american market, the firm is also working with US-based hardware innovator, Connection Technology Center (CTC), to co-develop advanced smart sensing solutions for the manufacturing sector.

The collaboration brings together CTC’s industry-leading industrial sensors with IntelliAM’s powerful AI platform, launching dual-branded hardware that integrates directly into IntelliAM’s system.

The joint solution is designed help US manufacturers bridge critical data gaps and provide access to richer real-time insights for asset performance, reliability, and predictive maintenance.

News: Value of South Yorkshire’s tech sector soars to £3bn

The value of tech companies to South Yorkshire’s economy has increased eightfold since 2014.

The value of South Yorkshire’s tech sector has grown by more than 700% in the last decade, according to a new report from data provider Dealroom, published in partnership with TECH SY, a project to scale up the South Yorkshire tech and digital economy.

Data from Companies House, the register of British companies, indicates there are now around 5,000 active tech companies in South Yorkshire. It is estimated that they employ almost 20,000 people.

The combined value of South Yorkshire’s tech startups was £3bn in 2024. This is eight times higher than in 2014, when South Yorkshire’s tech economy was worth just £370m. The value of pre-exit startups in South Yorkshire, which have not yet been acquired or floated on the stock market, was £737m in 2024. This is nine times more than in 2014 (£83m).

The report also looks at venture capital with tech startups in South Yorkshire raising over £200m in funding since since 2020. More than half of this (55%) went to deep tech startups pioneering entirely new products based on engineering innovations and scientific advances.

Findings also indicate that, despite progress, South Yorkshire’s startups appear underfunded compared to those in comparable ecosystems such as Eindhoven and Ghent, which have a similar mix of specialisms and comparable populations. South Yorkshire startups also receive a lower proportion of funding (24%) from foreign investors compared to the UK as a whole (55%).

Xeros, Metalysis, Suiso, Iceotope and IntelliAM are picked out as examples of promising tech startups that are based in Rotherham.

News: Rotherham IT provider secures prestigious double accolade

A Rotherham-based IT provider has been named as one of Yorkshire’s most exciting and promising businesses of 2025.

Balliante, which is headquartered in Rotherham town centre, was singled out in recognition of the company’s growth and expansion plans, both in the UK and US markets.

Compiled by influential regional business publication, Yorkshire Business Insider, the most exciting companies list highlights 50 businesses that deliver “something special” and features businesses predicted to make their mark on the regional economy during the next 12 months. Balliante is one of just two Rotherham-based businesses to make the list.

Craig Boddy, Balliante’s managing director, was also named by the publication as one of Yorkshire’s top 42 entrepreneurs aged under 42, in recognition of the growth and success the specialist IT provider has enjoyed during the past year, as well as recognising Craig’s commitment towards breaking down barriers and creating collaborative business opportunities, designed to support businesses operating in Rotherham and South Yorkshire.

The success topped off a remarkable 12 months for Balliante, which saw the business celebrate its fifth anniversary and create two new full-time jobs as well as establishing a presence in the US, through the opening of a new office in New York.

Co-founded by Craig and business partner Louis Marcus in 2020, Balliante delivers 24/7 IT support, network infrastructure management, cybersecurity, custom software development, CRM systems, as well as bespoke web design and app development.

News: Rotherham business joins stock exchange, raises £6m

Innovative Rotherham firm, Tan Delta Systems, is toasting a successful launch on to the stock exchange which has raised approximately £6m to be used for further expansion.

Based at Dinnington, Tan Delta provides equipment monitoring technologies and solutions that use real time oil analysis to enable material reductions in maintenance costs, improve reliability and reduce carbon footprint. Tan Delta currently supplies a growing customer base of blue-chip multinationals and equipment operators.

With Zeus Capital acting as Nominated Adviser and Sole Broker, an Initial Public Offering (IPO) and admission to AIM, raised £6m through the sale of shares, achieving a market capitalisation of £19m. Zeus said it was one of the largest AIM IPOs in 2023 to date.

The deal represents the next phase of Tan Delta’s growth strategy as a market leading, real-time equipment monitoring and data analytics business, with proceeds from the primary raise supporting the Company’s growth and expansion plans.

Tan Delta was co-founded in 2007 by Greenwood to develop the concept of real time oil condition analysis and to provide equipment operators with greater insight on the health and status of their equipment, thus allowing more efficient equipment operation.

Operators in a variety of industries, including power generation, mining, oil/gas and shipping, can reduce oil consumption by ensuring oil is not changed before it has reached the end of its life, and reduce breakdowns and associated costs by detecting issues before damage or failure occurs.

Following a period of R&D and trials, in 2020 the company’s first commercial sensor (OQSx-G2) entered volume production. Production is fully outsourced to a specialist contract manufacturer.

Admission documents show that Tan Delta has an initial foothold in the $200 billion global sensor market with an innovative and differentiated monitoring solution based on real time oil analysis and analytics, adding: "Despite limited sales and marketing to date, the company has successfully sold its products and services to a range of blue-chip customers including Shell, Aggreko and Schlumberger."

Tan Delta has generated positive profit after tax in each of the last three financial years, despite the challenges of COVID-19 and a global semi-conducter shortage. Turnover for the 2022 financial year was £1.575m.

Proceeds of the placing will be used for sales and marketing, product development and general working capital purposes.

Having primarily targeted large commercial and industrial equipment market segments, a new sensor product (G2-IM), currently at the concept stage but based upon the same core technology, will be developed which will be suitable for smaller scale, high volume applications in the light commercial, industrial and automotive segments.

The admission document adds: "The net proceeds of the Placing of New Shares will enable Tan Delta to significantly expand its sales and marketing to meet the support and expansion expectations of current customers as well as to attract new customers. Furthermore, it will enable the Company to increase its production capacity and accelerate new product and technology development."

News: Xeros dyeing to change the world

Xeros Technology Group plc has signed a deal with one of the largest manufacturers of garment finishing machines in the world that will help to reduce the environmental impact of new jeans.

Based on the Advanced Manufacturing Park (AMP) in Rotherham, Xeros is a Leeds University spin-out that has created a number of technologies that reduce the impact of clothing on the planet.

Trials carried out on the AMP using polymer beads demonstrated that Xeros can process denim jeans from their raw state to a finished product in a single machine in a continuous process at scale. The results were achieved with ultra-low chemistry, water ratios and effluent.

The latest deal is a technology license and distribution agreement for its garment finishing technology with KRM Tekstil Boya San. Tic Ltd.

Under the terms of the ten year, worldwide non-exclusive agreement, KRM, which will act as a global distributor for Yilmak Makine, is licensed to distribute and sell machines manufactured by Yilmak incorporating Xeros' proprietary XDrum and XOrb technology for use in denim processing, garment finishing and garment dyeing processes across Yilmak's full range of garment finishing machines.

Yilmak, headquartered in Istanbul, Turkey, was established in 1968 and is one of the largest manufacturers of garment finishing machines in the world. It exports to more than 35 countries globally and supplies machines to over 500 factories.

The agreement allows Xeros to significantly increase its market access into new territories including Europe, Brazil and Mexico as well as strengthen its current access into Asia. The Agreement has the potential to deliver substantial revenues over the 10-year term. The textile machinery market is estimated to be worth $52 billion by 2033.

Approximately 2 billion pairs of jeans are manufactured globally every year and Xeros' technology significantly reduces the volume of water, chemistry and cycle time used in the finishing processing of raw denim jeans into consumer products.

On other fronts, Xeros is expecting a business boost for its XFilter technology from new legislation having signed a number of global deals this year.

In a recent updat, Austin added: "Currently, the apparel industry is estimated to consume over 93 billion cubic metres of water every year in the production of clothing. These processes are not environmentally friendly, nor sustainable and without the intervention of technologies such as those offered by Xeros, will fail to reap the rewards of this consumer-driven ESG macro-trend.

"Many of these pressures are also relevant when considered in the context of the appliance industry, and have recently been exacerbated by France's decision to mandate a deadline of 1 January 2025 for a microfibre capture requirement in all washing machines. The announcement has paved the way for further reforms and placed increasing pressure on other governments to follow suit. California has also proposed similar legislation and we are currently awaiting the European Commission's publication of its initiative to reduce microplastic pollution. The passing of this legislation will have a substantive impact on reducing microfibre pollution at scale and improving the industry's environmental footprint.

NEXT, the British multinational clothing, footwear and home products retailer, has announced the success of an automation collaboration at its Dearne Valley Pallet fulfillment centre in Rotherham.

In 500,000 sq ft of warehouse space at Manvers, 250 Geek+ robots handle both goods-to-person picking and order sorting processes for NEXT's e-commerce operations.

Opened in 2008, Next's 1.1m sq ft Rotherham operation at Brookfield's Park had 1,500+ people working there in 2021, when the robots were first introduced. The two buildings can handle over 100,000 pallets and includes the largest warehouse in Next's 13-site distribution network. A £50m, 200,000 sq ft extension is on the cards, creating an additional 150 jobs.

Faced with high demand and operating in the volatile fashion industry, NEXT decided to streamline its processes and scale up efficiently to meet new customer requirements. To achieve this goal, they have sought efficient solutions including selecting Geek+ as their robotic warehouse automation partner. The hybrid “Pick-and-Sort” solution is the result of the successful co-development process between the two companies.

The process begins with the Geek+ P800 picking robots, which retrieve the pallets from the pallet transfer area and move them to the storage area for picking. Once a picking order is initiated, the robot transports the rack to a multifunctional workstation that is utilised for both the picking and sorting procedures. Once the picking is completed, the operator deposits the item onto the S20C sorting robot. The S20C robot then transfers the goods to the designated chute for the depot, while the parcel heads downstairs for packing. The flexibility of the Geek+ solution enables NEXT to manage a wide variety of products that differ in size, weight, and velocity of sale.

With this solution, NEXT can process 16,000 units per day. According to NEXT, the efficiency of the automated process is twice that of manual picking.

One of the advantages of the Geek+ solution is its scalability. To meet their growing demand, NEXT introduced 50 additional S20C robots earlier this year.

News: New grant designed to attract tech businesses

A new grant has been launched designed to attract tech businesses to South Yorkshire, generating more digital jobs and boosting the local economy.

The Tech Welcome Grant, funded by South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA), will provide grants of between £5k to £10k to businesses new to South Yorkshire and start-ups from outside the area to relocate here and create jobs in the region.

South Yorkshire’s Mayor Oliver Coppard said: “Thanks to our entrepreneurs, world-class research universities and talent pool, South Yorkshire is not just attracting, but creating high-quality tech companies and high-value jobs. Innovation is part of South Yorkshire's DNA, and we are going to make sure our region flourishes by working closely with stars of the sector to create an action plan for tech growth in our region. Digital and tech are the lifeblood of our economy; increasingly, every barrier is a digital or technology barrier, so it’s a vital sector for the whole of South Yorkshire.

The grant was announced at a tech summit held at the end of 2022 which was a chance for businesses that work in the tech sector to network and showcase their expertise, build local, national and international relationships and share knowledge. The summit focused on the actions needed to ensure the right support, talent, finance, workspaces and culture are in place to help entrepreneurs and innovators from all backgrounds to achieve success.

Coppard added: “The ecosystem we are building here, and the assets we already have in South Yorkshire, will mean those businesses and people who do relocate will thrive here – creating more value for them, the region, and the UK.”

The Tech Summit, which was attended by 188 digital & technology sector specialists and held at Cineworld in Barnsley, was a chance for businesses that work in the tech sector to network and showcase their expertise, build local, national and international relationships and share knowledge. The summit focused on the actions needed to ensure the right support, talent, finance, workspaces and culture are in place to help entrepreneurs and innovators from all backgrounds to achieve success.

Gary Stewart, Managing Director of Techstars NYC powered by J.P. Morgan who has spent the past 15 years investing in global start-ups, was keynote speaker at the event. He explains: “What I’ve learned over the years is that great ideas can come from anyone, anywhere. Entrepreneurs are the wealth creators and we need new start-ups to create wealth. Gary also gave his top tips from his many years of working with Tech start-ups. This included advising that small markets can offer big opportunities, where a company can gain a niche over competitors. He discussed how important it is to get corporate companies involved as they offer big funding opportunities. He also recommended that start-ups should celebrate small wins and encouraged them to build a positive narrative around what they were doing through the press and social media.

Delegates also heard from Darren Balcombe, Deputy CEO of TEAM SY, who discussed the impact that TEAM SY is already having in South Yorkshire and how the Tech Welcome Grant is set to boost the region’s popularity for all things Tech on a national and international basis.

News: Parseq picks up BT contract

Rotherham-based business process outsourcer Parseq has won a five-year contract to provide back office services for BT Group.

The partnership will see the Hellaby company use technologies such as automation and AI to help streamline payment processing and customer correspondence processes for BT and its EE subsidiary.

This will include managing and digitising BT and EE’s inbound customer mail and handling all payment processing, from transactions made by cheque to BACS payment allocation.

Through the work, Parseq’s team will manage approximately 3.5 million pieces of inbound mail annually and process approximately 700,000 payments per year.

News: £5m investment to boost the growth of South Yorkshire's tech sector

Innovative tech entrepreneurs across South Yorkshire are set to benefit from a £5.9m project to turbocharge the region's business support and investment provision.

The TEAM SY project has been set up to connect with existing business support services in the region and to expand, enhance and extend the collective impact of their work.

Start-up experts Capital Enterprise, in partnership with Barnsley Council, will lead on the project working collaboratively with business support providers, universities, co-working spaces and other partners in Sheffield, Barnsley, Rotherham and Doncaster.

Darren Balcombe of Capital Enterprise said: “We are very excited about working with everyone in South Yorkshire to help expand and improve the existing business support and investment ecosystem – and bring new resources and expertise into the mix.”

TEAM SY, which stands for Tech Ecosystem Acceleration and Market-making in South Yorkshire is backed by £3,543,766 from the ERDF England Programme, designed to support economic growth in the regions.

The project will run for three years and aims to help digital and tech businesses explore new ideas and markets, set-up or scale-up their tech companies and create up to 200 high-value jobs in the process. A key objective will be to help entrepreneurs gain financial backing for their enterprises, attracting over £20m in private investment to the region.

Darren said: “Our mission is to help new and early stage South Yorkshire businesses take best advantage of what support is already available to them and to identify and invest in the regional strengths such as IOT, Advanced manufacturing, Movement technologies and Digital health for example.

News: World first as Gala Technology extend secure payments to video

Gala Technology, the innovative Rotherham-based company behind the multi-award winning 'Cardholder Not Present' (CNP) payment solution, SOTpay has announced that they have conducted a successful proof of concept for use over video technologies.

The Manvers firm has processed secure and PCI DSS compliant payments across numerous video meeting technologies, including Microsoft Teams, Zoom, Webex and GoToMeeting in what is believed to be a world's first.

Integrating SOTpay enables merchants to protect themselves from the ever-growing threat of fraud related chargebacks and the associated costs.

The Fintech company, who also picked up the "Best International Card Not Present Solution" at the CNP Awards in San Francisco earlier this week, has worked alongside their sister company, Gala Tent, the largest manufacturer and retailer of commercial quality marquees and gazebos in the UK, in order to trial the pilot, which will enable cardholders to complete transactions, whilst face to face with an employee, albeit via video technology.

Steven Jones, commercial director at Gala Technology, said: "Remote virtual meetings are now commonplace, and usage has increased massively across a range of digital platforms.

"Zoom are boasting that users have soared from ten million daily meeting participants back in December to 300 million in April and rivals like Microsoft Teams and Google Meet are also showing significant traction. Microsoft reported a 70% growth in the last month to 75 million daily users and recorded 200 million meeting participants in a single day in April.

"This evidences that these technologies have become a way of life, albeit somewhat enforced during the COVID-19 pandemic. We believe that they will continue to be used as part of the ‘new normal’ as organisations consider life after lockdown, with continued social distancing and working from home expected.

"It was our thought process that whilst these platforms are used predominantly for either B2B meetings or a way for families and friends to engage with each other remotely, we could encourage business to open up the facility to firstly interact with their customers ‘face to face’ and then to accept secure and compliant B2C payments via this method, by using our SOTpay technology which already supports merchants across telephony, web chat, SMS and social media channels."

News: Rotherham in 5G test bed bid

Parts of the Rotherham borough could benefit from a multimillion pound investment in ultrafast 5G networks as a joint bid with Sheffield aims to capture Government funding.

The Urban Connected Communities Project, a key part of the Industrial Strategy and the next step in the Government's 5G Testbed and Trials Programme, will develop a large-scale, citywide testbed for wireless 5G infrastructure.

Sheffield City Council is leading on a bid to secure funding to test how new technology can make urban communities inherently safer, greener, more efficient and more attractive places to live.

5G is a term used to describe the fifth generation of mobile communications technologies. It is not yet fully developed but it is set to be a wireless connectivity solution that will enable thousands of users to get online, all at once, and all benefit from ultrafast speeds. It is the closeness of the transmitters, unlike 4G where they are far apart, that will create an "always on" connectivity.

The investment in new network infrastructure is also seen as key to the success of innovations like autonomous vehicles and industrial digitalisation.

It is on the so-called "Industry 4.0" aspect that explains the inclusion of the Advanced Manufacturing Park (AMP) in Rotherham, and the wider Advanced Manufacturing Innovation District (AMID), in the bid.

The University of Sheffield's Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) is pioneering the coming together of cyber networks, with physical networks, to create new autonomous systems.

Using big data, analytics and high power computing can help industry to understand its systems and production lines to gain efficiency and quality to improve the product and competitiveness in the market. The AMRC has demonstrated the idea through virtual reality and smart manufacturing.

Rotherham town centre is also included in the bid. Here, Rotherham Council is progressing plans to provide free WiFi.

With a pot of £200m from the National Productivity Investment Fund (NPIF), the Government has already distributed £25m to pave the way for a future rollout of 5G technology in the UK.

The winning bid for the Urban Connected Communities Project will be trialling a variety of initiatives, such as video consultation and remote health treatment; real-time monitoring and management of traffic and public transport; and the use of augmented reality.

Related to the point about the AMRC, the project could also focus on: "Maintenance of manufacturing assembly lines through use of robotics and augmented reality would enable millions of measurements per second to be taken to predict when parts need replacing or rerouting to improve productivity."

Digital Minister Margot James said: "This is a huge opportunity for an urban area to become the flagship of our ambitious programme to make Britain fit for the future and a world leader in 5G.

"Trialling 5G at scale across an entire city is a chance to prove the economic benefits predicted from this new technology, test different methods of deployment and boost the connectivity of ordinary people working and living there."

Speaking on the Sheffield Digital Podcast, Mark Gannon, director of Business Change and Information Solutions at Sheffield City Council, said: "The Government want to demonstrate that the UK can produce a city with the latest technology and test lots of amazing innovations as part of the Industrial Strategy - part of improving productivity.

"There is potentially up to a hundred million quid to invest in a single place. The call came out recently and it has to be led by a local authority so we have decided that we will lead it.

"The geography that we are going for is Sheffield city - not just city centre, but the whole city - and we are going to include the Advanced Manufacturing Park and the centre of Rotherham aswell. So that will be the urban area - the wider conurbation with the innovation corridor and the AMRC."

Working with the University of Leeds, the enterprise is developing a new system that reduces the power consumed in data centres by using liquid rather than air to provide cooling, eliminating the need for power-hungry fans.

An independent panel of judges, chaired by HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco, selected Iceotope as winner of the award for Excellence in the Field of Technology Commercialisation at CleanEquity Monaco 2017 - the forum for emerging sustainable technology and resource efficiency companies.

Iceotope's patented approach sees components encapsulated in 3M Novec, an inert and environmentally sound coolant. From its base in the AMP Technology Centre, the company has designed and manufactured a flexible and efficient product range from workstations through to rack based enterprise data centres for edge of network and cloud.

The company, which secured $10m to help further commercialise its innovative cooling solutions in 2014, is targeting a market worth around $15bn per annum. The solution typically reduces data centre cooling costs by 97%, ICT power load by 20% and overall ICT infrastructure costs by 50%.

News: Iceotope targets manufacturing sector

Iceotope, the hi-tech firm based on the Advanced Manufacturing Park (AMP) in Rotherham, is targeting the manufacturing sector by demonstrating its liquid cooling system for high-performance computing (HPC) used in harsh and rugged environments.

Working with the University of Leeds, the enterprise is developing a new system that reduces the power consumed in data centres by using liquid rather than air to provide cooling, eliminating the need for power-hungry fans.

The company, which secured $10m to help further commercialise its innovative cooling solutions in 2014, has become a member of the University of Sheffield Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) with Boeing and will be trialling its high-performance workstations that are suitable for office environments.

Chris Hodgson, IT Systems Manager at The AMRC, said: "Creating HPC facilities within a manufacturing environment can be challenging due to the variety of settings and uses required.

"Servers and workstations need to be protected against hazards such as dust and debris created by manufacturing processes. Increasingly flexibility of location and efficient heat management are also required for office-based computing centres. Placing the computing power at the edge of the network also reduces bandwidth and interconnectivity requirements."

Workstations will be trialled in the AMRC's Design, Prototyping and Testing Centre and on the workshop floor of the Composite Centre, where the sealed units will protect workstations from carbon fibre dust that is routinely generated by the manufacturing operations. A data centre facility will soon be installed in the AMRC's newest development Factory 2050, to assist in the processing of "big data" for a large volume metrology project.

Sam Hyde, a project engineer with the AMRC's Design and Prototyping Group, said: "The Iceotope system represents a valuable resource for the design and prototyping group. The power available is ideal for computationally intensive work, such as computational fluid dynamics, finite element analysis and 3D rendering.

"It is also useful that the machine is totally silent in operation, unlike similar machines which require a large number of high power fans for cooling. This allows us to keep the machine in the quiet office, and not need a dedicated room for the equipment."

The partnership is a three year investment for Iceotope, who will provide service and support to the AMRC as well as upgrading the current installations after new developments, in which they hope to further reduce the size of the system.

Working with the University of Leeds, the enterprise is developing a new system that reduces the power consumed in data centres by using liquid rather than air to provide cooling, eliminating the need for power-hungry fans. The company successfully completed a round of fundraising for $10m in 2014 to help further commercialise its innovative cooling solutions.

Iceotope's patented approach sees components encapsulated in 3M Novec, an inert and environmentally sound coolant. From its base in the AMP Technology Centre, the company has now launched a silent, liquid cooled GPU compatible server blade to accommodate high-performance computing components such as graphics cards and media accelerators.

A GPU, or graphics processing unit, is often found in high end PCs and used primarily for the smooth decoding and rendering of 3D animations and video. Iceotope believes its new GPU server will allow users to add greater flexibility and scalability to high-performance computing operations, while realising the significant energy and space savings made possible through liquid cooling technology.

With heat generating IT components housed in a sealed blade and immersed in a safe, non-flammable coolant, Iceotope's GPU server is contained within a resilient cabinet occupying less than one square metre of floor space and operates in virtual silence. It can be deployed alongside the teams that use it in almost any space, including office, laboratories, factories and logistics areas.

Peter Hopton, founder and technology director at Iceotope,said: "This is a great milestone for Iceotope and a big step forward for more sustainable high-performance computing. HPC users no longer need to choose between accelerated performance and improved data centre efficiency, now they can achieve both.
