News: AMP shows strength of manufacturing in Yorkshire

By

Iain Gray, chief executive of the Technology Strategy Board, visited the AMP in Rotherham as part of a recent trip to the Yorkshire region. During a whistle stop tour, Mr Gray visited companies in the ITC building, plus the TWI Technology Centre and the AMRC’s new Factory of the Future. Mr Gray said: "Manufacturing covers a whole range of technologies here in Yorkshire, particularly hard metals, engineering capabilities, aerospace and energy. There is some terrific stuff going on. The businesses are out there winning contracts from all around the world."Yorkshire and Humber has real strength and depth in manufacturing technologies. If you look at the region and what has happened in the last 10 years, traditional manufacturers have had to reinvent themselves. Manufacturing is not in decline and businesses around here have adapted to changes and make a major contribution to the market." The Technology Strategy Board is an executive non-departmental public body sponsored by the Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills, and is investing up to £1bn over the next three years to support innovation and technology development across the UK.

News: More Rotherham buildings up for design awards

By

Two Rotherham developments, the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre and the Eco Homes at Henley Rise, have been shortlisted for this year’s RIBA Yorkshire White Rose Awards. The Bond Bryan designed "Factory of the Future" at the Advanced Manufacturing Park houses the AMRC, a partnership between Boeing and the University of Sheffield. Over 100 researchers will be stationed at the facility, and will be responsible for transferring knowledge of pioneering industrial techniques in aerospace, automotive and medical sectors to manufacturing companies throughout the whole region. The building is 4,200 sq m and distinctive in its architecture. It has been designed as national exemplar of sustainable building development and includes eco heat pumps and two wind turbines. The design is shortlisted for the overall White Rose Award for Architecture and the Sustainable Futures Award, where it is joined by the Henley Rise project. The South Yorkshire Housing Association project provides 23 timber-framed affordable homes at Masbrough. The properties are superinsulated to minimise heat loss and for most of the year, heat from lights and appliances will provide enough warmth without the need to use central heating. All the properties benefit from a complete solar roof generating 3000KW of electricity per property and providing at least two thirds of the hot water needed by the household. This is currently the largest installation of its kind in the UK.

News: The future of energy production visible in Rotherham

By

The Rolls Royce Factory of the Future at the Advanced Manufacturing Park in Rotherham is set for its official launch after the installation of two wind turbines on site, but a larger wind turbine is set to go up at the adjacent Environmental Energy Technology Centre. Due to be completed by the end of the year the 225kW turbine and 45-metre tower will provide power for a revolutionary hydrogen mini grid, power the neighbouring Innovation Technology Centre, and provide energy to be sold to the National Grid. The mini grid works by using electricity from the turbine to split water into its component molecules, hydrogen and oxygen, in a device called an electrolyser, before compressing it and storing it in composite tanks. When demand outstrips the power the turbine generates, a 30kW fuel cell will convert the hydrogen back into electricity. The hydrogen mini grid is just one part of the sophisticated energy system designed to reduce the Environmental Energy Technology Centre's carbon emissions to zero. In a recent summit on climate chamnge, Gordon Brown said: "The overall added value of the low carbon energy sector by 2050 could be as high as $3 trillion per year worldwide, employing more than 25 million people. If Britain maintains its share of this growth there could be over a million people employed in our environmental industries within the next two decades."
