News: First phase of Waverley housing officially launched

By

A launch ceremony has been held for the first of a planned 4,000 houses on the Waverley site in Rotherham.

Led by UK Coal, the £100m Waverley regeneration project on the site of the former Orgreave colliery is the biggest brownfield site development in South Yorkshire and covers 741 acres, an area bigger than Sheffield city centre.

The launch ceremony was undertaken by the Deputy Mayor of Rotherham, Cllr John Foden along with legendary former England goalkeeper, Gordon Banks, who worked as a coal bagger at the former Orgreave pit site before starting his professional football career.

Over a development phase of 20 years, the site will see the establishment of a new community of around 4,000 homes, shops, restaurants, schools, leisure facilities, health and community centres and parks.

Leading firms have been secured by landowners UK Coal and their property arm, Harworth Estates for the first phase of housing. 89 dwellings are planned by Taylor Wimpey, 96 from Barrat Homes and 66 by Harron Homes.

Duncan Armstrong-Payne, development manager at Harworth Estates said: "We're delighted to have launched the first phase of housing at Waverley, and have worked hard with the house builders, the local community and other stakeholders including Rotherham Council to bring this project forward.

"Its great that our partners and stakeholders share our vision for Waverley and are prepared to proceed with us in what is still a difficult economy."

Based on the Advanced Manufacturing Park at Waverley, Harworth Estates recently had plans to build 1,200 new homes on the former site of Rossington Colliery approved by Doncaster Borough Council.
