The results of the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise confirm that the AMRC is part of one of the best departments in the UK – having a status as a world-class institution carrying out research of international quality. In the UK Higher Education sector, 33 departments were submitted for assessment in mechanical engineering, and the results put The University of Sheffield as second in the UK. Vice-Chancellor, Professor Keith Burnett said: "Sheffield´s RAE results reflect the University´s international standing in the research community and will further strengthen our reputation for leading-edge research that brings benefit to society at large. "At Sheffield we carry out world-leading research and the RAE is a rigorous benchmark which reaffirms the University´s significant research profile." The University of Sheffield Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) with Boeing, is a £60 million collaboration between world-leaders in the aerospace supply chain, key government offices and international academic institutions based on the Advanced Manufacturing Park in Rotherham. The AMRC has over 80 highly qualified researchers and engineers from around the globe and research is carried out on new and exotic materials such as titanium, inconel and composites.
