By

South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue has been granted approval for a new £5.5million community fire station and training centre in the Dearne Valley. SYFR has taken ownership of the 3.5 acre site on Manvers Way which will have the capacity to house four fire appliances and will feature a bespoke training facility for the Service's Technical Rescue Unit (TRU), which will move from its current base at Rotherham Fire Station. The station will also have a community room for members of the local community to use for meetings and events. Building work is due to start in April this year, with the station set for completion by March 2010 and the TRU training facility due to be ready by May 2010. Plans were drawn up by Bond Bryan Architects and gainined planning approval last November. It will be constructed by North Midland Building Ltd, based in Sutton-In-Ashfield. SYFR's Chief Fire Officer Mark Smitherman said: "The new Dearne Fire Station will enable us to provide an excellent emergency response to the main residential areas in the Dearne Valley. In addition to this, we will also have a state-of-the-art training facility, which allows us to further improve the level of training we give to all of our firefighters."
