News: Rotherham station's £7.5m redevelopment plans continue
Project work on the proposed £7.5m refurbishment of Rotherham's central railway station is continuing as part of a national initiative to improve rail services across South Yorkshire.
Early plans for the Rotherham development are now being put in place by South Yorkshire Integrated Transport Authority (SYITA) which aims to create an innovative landmark gateway to the town centre.
Improvements to the Rotherham station include a new ticket office, forecourt, passenger lounge, toilets, lifts, stairs and retail kiosk, CCTV cameras and better lighting, improved platforms and passenger information, a better access road, disabled parking, cycle stands and taxi provision.
Funding for the project is set to come from Yorkshire Forward, South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive (SYPTE), European Regional Development Fund and Network Rail.
Planning approval was granted in January and the necessary rail industry approvals are currently being sought.
The SYITA is now looking for a suitable works contractor to complete the development, with the design and tendering process to begin by the end of 2009 and completion expected early 2011.
Mick Jameson, chair of South Yorkshire Integrated Transport Authority, said: "These improvements will bring a noticeable and lasting improvement to the environment of South Yorkshire’s train stations. This will be of great benefit to passengers as well as improving the public perception of the facilities."
