News: Dormer Tools breaking new ground with composite materials

By

Dormer Tools has invested in the creation of a Research Technology Centre (RTC) at their headquarters in Rotherham.

Composite materials are becoming increasingly important in the manufacture of not just aircraft, but also cars, boats, wind turbines and even bridges.

This is largely due to their excellent strength-to-weight ratio and corrosion resistance, their use has increased significantly over recent years.

Dormer's RTC is working on the issues with machining composite materials such as splintering and fraying and the theoretical and practical work undertaken by the RTC has already resulted in tangible advances in tooling technology.

Ricky Payling, key account manager Aerospace and Composites at Dormer, said: "Research into the structure and machining characteristics of composites is gathering pace all the time. As such, the RTC will place Dormer and its partners on a "fast-track" to understanding these materials and, consequently, provide customers with tooling solutions that offer increased productivity, improved quality and reduced costs."

Dormer Tools is based on the Advanced Manufacturing Park in Rotherham.
