News: UKSE focuses new support on Rotherham

By

Red Monkey Films is the first Rotherham company to take a small development loan from the new UK Steel Enterprise Kickstart Fund.

The Corus Group subsidiary has boosted the recently launched fund to £110,000 to provide small low-cost loans of up to £2,500 to young growing Rotherham companies in addition to the existing small grants available to start-ups. The funding will help those already trading who are ready to take their businesses to the next level.

The loan scheme, being administered through Rotherham Investment & Development Office (RiDO) together with Donbac in close liaison with the Enterprise division of the Chamber of Commerce, will favour those businesses which can demonstrate they are generating income but are finding it difficult to finance further development.

Rotherham born Andy Muscroft set up Red Monkey Films, a commercial and corporate video production company, three years ago when he moved back to his home town. He said: "I have recently moved Red Monkey to new premises at Fusion @ Magna and required the loan to upgrade my post production hardware and software to offer clients such as Sheffield Hallam University, Kirklees NHS, Natural England and Capgemini the very latest in video production technology."

Keith Williams, Regional Manager of UK Steel Enterprise said: "We wanted to extend our Kickstart Fund to help young businesses such as Red Monkey Films through the next stage of development. Andy needs to invest in equipment and software if he is to offer the best service to his clients and secure new ones.

"Kickstart grants are already going out to start-up companies and these loans are another means of supporting Rotherham businesses at a time when business finance can be difficult to obtain."

Gerald Smith, the Borough Council's cabinet member for economic development, planning and transportation said: "This is excellent support for new and local businesses.

"Creative sector businesses such as Red Monkey Films, based at Fusion @ Magna, one of our four purpose-built business centres, are a key ingredient in our local economy, and start-ups and small growing companies are vital seedcorn for a strong economy.

"This is about more than business – it's about people's lives and ambitions."
