News: Free parking starts on Saturdays in Rotherham town centre

By

A major initiative begins this week in Rotherham town centre to enable shoppers to park for free on Saturdays.

The scheme, developed by Rotherham Borough Council with the Local Strategic Partnership, applies to all on-street parking and council-run car parks in the town centre. The partnership is made up of a range of local organisations, from the council and Chamber of Commerce to emergency services and voluntary bodies.

The Free After 3 campaign will also continue for another year, further encouraging people to visit during the week, as well as at weekends, to support town centre businesses.

Chair of the Local Strategic Partnership Brian Chapple said: "A huge amount of effort has already been made to improve the offer, environment and accessibility of the town centre.

"It's great that, through the efforts of all partners, we are continuing this year to be able to offer yet more to our shoppers, encouraging them to come into town and take advantage of the great shops and places to eat we have here."

In addition to the free parking, there are also changes soon to be announced to the on-street parking bay maximum stays. Most bays will change from a one-hour to two-hour maximum stay and there are now more options for the required length of stay, leading to more flexibility for shoppers, while also continuing to encourage the turnover in vehicles to help trade.

Assistant town-centre manager Bernadette Rushton said: "There are around 2,000 parking spaces in the town centre, but these changes make it easier for visitors to shop at their leisure. As always, we would encourage visitors to observe the maximum-stay periods so everyone gets a chance to visit the centre and benefit from finding an easy and free spot to park."
