News: Sheffield City Region Local Enterprise Partnership announces Chair

By

James Newman has been named as the chair of the newly established Sheffield City Region Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP).

The former Master Cutler and current chairman of Finance Yorkshire helped to bring the bid together with businesses and local authority representatives across the City Region in the summer.

Local Enterprise Partnerships (LEPs) are the government's new model to promote economic development. The intention is that LEPs will provide the strategic leadership required to set out local economic priorities, and better reflect the natural economic geography of the areas they serve.

The Sheffield City Region was given the green light to establish one of the UK's first Local Enterprise Partnerships in October.

James Newman said: "I am delighted to be taking on the role as first Chairman of the Sheffield City Region Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP). Having been closely involved in the development of the original proposals submitted to Government at the beginning of September, I am delighted that our LEP is in the first wave of 24 LEPs being set up across the country – a fantastic achievement and a timely recognition by the Government of what the Sheffield City Region has to offer.

"The formation of the LEP is a fantastic opportunity for business and local government to work together in partnership to make a real difference to the economy of the whole area. Our commitment will be to ensure the growth of a rebalanced local economy, lead by the private sector, which will also contribute significantly to the renewal of the national economy as a whole.

"I am very much looking forward to leading the next very important phase in the formation of the LEP, which will be to create a real private and public partnership on the Board. This will involve developing more detailed business plans for the region by building on the success of existing partnership structures, in a more focused and collaborative way, so as to stimulate and encourage economic growth."

An announcement on the full LEP board members is expected by the end of the year.
