News: Rotherham companies open their doors as part of the Global Manufacturing Festival

By

Manufacturing companies in Rotherham are opening their doors to young people this week in an effort to inspire and nurture the UK's next generation of manufacturing and engineering talent.

The initiative is part of The Global Manufacturing Festival: Sheffield, and a link up with National Science and Engineering Week.

25 companies, including Rollem, DavyMarkham, Sheffield Forgemasters, Ancon, Firth Rixson, MTL Group, Tata, Newburgh Engineering, Siemens VAI and Joint Replacement Instrumentation, are inviting groups of young people to experience the opportunities which are available within the industry first hand and learn about the exciting prospects that a career in manufacturing and engineering can bring. This activity is sponsored by The Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE).

National Science and Engineering Week is organised by Sheffield Hallam University and the University of Sheffield, in collaboration with local schools, museums, industry and commerce and is a national celebration of the very best in British research and innovation. The Global Manufacturing Festival: Sheffield is organised by Square 5 in partnership with Creativesheffield and Business and Education South Yorkshire, and is sponsored by Firth Rixson and Nabarro LLP.

Stuart Murphy, Managing Director at Rollem, added: "It's great to see such a diverse selection of organisations joining forces to take part in this and I urge schools to take advantage of the opportunity. This is a fantastic chance for young people to get a real taste of the industry and I hope that the open days are an inspiration."

Industry visits are also an integral part of work-wise – a unique, highly successful, employer led and locally developed programme aimed at preparing young people with the essential skills for employment in manufacturing and engineering.
