News: MTL Group secure multimillion pound offshore wind farm contract

By

Rotherham contract-manufacturing specialist, MTL Group, has been awarded a multimillion pound contract to supply 97 Boat Landing Systems to a leading European foundations manufacturer for a German offshore wind farm in the North Sea.

The deal is MTL Group's largest export contract to date and the first announced since the company opened a new state-of-the-art factory in Brinsworth in March.

MTL Group is one of the fastest growing project manufacturing specialists in the metals sector and is a global supplier of secondary steelwork. It works with a global blue-chip customer base in the defence, construction equipment, rail and off-shore wind energy sectors.

They handle multi-million pound contracts for customers who manufacture large offshore foundation structures for the offshore and renewable energy sectors and are a major supplier of boat landing systems, nacelle bed plates, transition decks and plate girders.

Dr Henry Shirman, managing director at MTL said: "This is a major breakthrough for us in the European offshore wind market. In order to meet the high standards to the offshore sector, MTL Group has undergone the necessary audits to be accredited to supply offshore fabrications.

"The other main area our customers are benefiting from is our on-going investment in the latest state of the art equipment offering existing and new customers an enhanced value proposition. This has been well received by our customers in the offshore sector."

The investment in technology means that MTL's Rotherham facility boasts the largest laser in the UK and a 640-tonne robotic press, which is the biggest of its kind anywhere in the world. A new high definition bevel plasma cutter and a robotic tube cutter are in place, both specially designed to support the growth in orders from the offshore renewable energy sector.

Charles Hendry, minister of state for energy said: "MTL Group is a fine example of the engineering excellence that already exists here in the UK and I am delighted that our support has led to the company winning this lucrative contract. The government is committed to helping more British companies to follow MTL Group's lead.

"MTL Group has worked closely with DECC to increase the UK supply of secondary steelwork for the offshore wind sector. With DECC's support MTL Group has invested in state of the art machinery that meets the equirements of this growing sector.

"I want the UK to be a leader in the development and demonstration of new technologies for the growing offshore wind sector, and I am keen to see the UK supply chain grow to support this."

25 of MTL's 310 employees will be working on the project at the advanced manufacturing facility in Rotherham. Work is due to commence in July 2011 with the final delivery of boat landings to be delivered by March 2012.
