News: Final sign off for A57 improvements

By

The government has granted their Full (final) Approval for the £14.7m transport scheme to upgrade the A57 from junction 31 of the M1 to Todwick crossroads in Rotherham, enabling work to begin.

The Department for Transport has granted £11.8m for improvements and Rotherham Council has committed £2.9m for the long-awaited scheme.

A public enquiry was concluded earlier this year when the planning inspector agreed with the council that the scheme would improve road safety and bring huge economic and regeneration benefits to the area.

The scheme improves an important 1 mile stretch of road between the M1 and A1 and supports the continued regeneration of the former coalfields at Dinnington which is now a thriving business location.

Planning permission for the initial scheme was secured in 2009 for a dual carriageway between the M1 and a new roundabout replacing the existing crossroads at Todwick.

Revisions were needed to reflect the drop in funding from the Government; the disbanding of Yorkshire Forward, which was also contributing to the scheme, and the cuts to local government.

Planning permission was approved last year for a revised scheme with a signalised crossing to replace the plan for a subway under the road. As a result, the road will also have a 50mph speed limit instead of the original 70mph limit.

The scheme requires compulsory purchase of the required land and is scheduled to open in December 2013.

Norman Baker said: "This is a useful scheme that will provide a boost for the local area by improving journeys for motorists, pedestrians and bus passengers. As well as reducing congestion on the road, this work will improve road safety so it's a win-win for the Dinnington area.

"The £11.8m we are putting into this scheme shows that this government is serious about investing in the infrastructure the country needs to drive economic growth."

The council has selected Ringway Infrastructure Services as the preferred contractor with the contract, if eventually entered into, serviced from Ringway's Rotherham office in Wath upon Dearne.
