News: Willmott updates Rotherham hospital’s special care baby unit

By

A team of 22 workers from Willmott Dixon Partnerships Rotherham branch has transformed outdated spaces within the special care baby unit (SCBU) at Rotherham Hospital.

SCBU provides support for babies who are born prematurely, full-term babies who are ill or who have complications after birth. SCBU also cares for babies who require intensive care, high dependency care and special care.

Rooms, such as those revitalised by Willmott Dixon, are used by families for an overnight stay before SCBU babies are taken home. Nurses are on hand, should any problems arise, which helps families to ease into their new lives without incubators, tubes or medical intervention.

Willmott Dixon Partnerships, which repairs and maintains 12,000 homes in Rotherham, carry out a number of community projects throughout their areas of operation each year.

Rick Willmott, chief executive at the Willmott Dixon Group, recently performed the official opening of the Willmott Dixon Parents Suite at the hospital. He said: "We're delighted to have supported the hospital's special care baby unit by providing a much needed renovation.

"We were invited by Councillor Mahroof Hussain to help support the hospital and we were only too delighted to lend a helping hand as part of our focus on community involvement and we are extending our support once again over the next year to the Trust's Dr Ted's Children's Appeal.

"Our staff have enjoyed carrying out the programme of works which will provide a lasting legacy to the people of Rotherham. It's important that families of babies being cared for have an environment in which they feel comfortable and we hope that our work will go some way help them feel at home during a difficult time."

Angela Griffiths, ward manager for the SCBU at Rotherham Hospital, added: "It means so much to our families to have the support of the family rooms on SCBU.

"The bedrooms help new parents to be near their babies. They give the parents confidence to provide their baby's care before discharge. We can't thank Willmott Dixon enough. It's been a pleasure to work with the team and they have left behind a legacy that will be welcomed by parents and babies for years to come."
