News: MTL secure Mamba contract
Rotherham manufacturing specialist, MTL Group, has secured a significant contract to supply fabricated armoured hulls to Panzer Technologies for its Mamba vehicle.
MTL Group is one of Europe's fastest growing project manufacturing specialists in the metal sector and is a global supplier of secondary steelwork.
It works with a global blue-chip customer base in the defence, construction equipment, rail and off-shore wind energy sectors.
The new deal will see the hulls manufactured at MTL's £5m, 300,00 sq ft state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Brinsworth before being shipped, ready for final assembly, to South Africa.
MTL Group stocks and processes in excess of 10,000 tonnes of quenched and tempered steels per year, and is one of the largest stockists and suppliers of armour plate in Europe. They also specialise in blast floors and ballistic armour.
The Mamba is an armoured personnel carrier used by a number of countries as well as peacekeeping forces of the United Nations.
MTL said that the contract was secured due to their state of the art manufacturing capability and competitive pricing, plus the added value created through its unique DFM (Design for Manufacture) service.
The specialist added value engineering service for the defence sector sees a dedicated team at MTL come together at the design stages to review the customers' design and look at alternative processing methods to reduce weight, cost and increase the protection levels.
Simon Hurst, sales manager for defence at MTL Group, said: "The customer liked the idea that we wouldn't just weld the product, rather that we would support and provide a DFM review that would enhance the product.
"The key thing our customers like is the innovation we bring, we are helping designers around the world to improve the integrity of the structure whilst reducing manufacturing costs.
"This is an important order for MTL Group and it makes it even more special manufacturing such an iconic vehicle such as the Mamba."
MTL underwent a management buyout in 2006 and has doubled its turnover in the last five years to £50m. Since moving to Rotherham, export sales have almost doubled to £7.3m
