News: Kind-hearted Martek make donation to Rotherham school

By

Manvers-based Martek Medical is giving Oakwood Technology School in Rotherham a special defibrillator via the Hand on Heart charity which helps to equip schools with lifesaving defibrillator skills.

Martek Medical was born in 2006, as part of the Martek Marine family, a well established world leader in marine safety and environmental monitoring systems. They are the official UK distributor for Defibtech LLC - a leading innovator in the field of automated external defibrillators (AEDs).

Howard Webb MBE, World Cup final referee and Honorary Freeman of Rotherham is to make the presentation.

Paul Luen, chief executive of Martek Medical said: "We are delighted that Howard could join us to make this donation to Oakwood Technology School. He has had firsthand experience of witnessing someone collapse due to heart problems. Images were seen across the world when Premiership footballer Fabrice Muamba collapsed on the pitch and Howard was praised for his response to this incident. We know that this is a topic which is important to him.

"This donation launches our relationship with Hand on Heart, a non-profit charity providing funding for defibrillator packages, including defibrillator and CPR training for staff and pupils, to schools nationwide.

"Although Oakwood School is right next door to Rotherham Hospital in situations like the one encountered by Muamba every second counts. This equipment could literally be the difference between life and death."

Howard Webb added: "This is a generous donation which could be live saving and I am delighted to be able to give this to Oakwood School on behalf of Martek Medical.

"It is always good to see companies give back to the community and this is a donation which will make a real difference."

Martek Medical will be launching a competition in the coming weeks for another school to win a defibrillator for their site.
