News: Sheffield city region's US mission

By

Rachel Clark, investment manager at the Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) is on a mission in the USA to promote the Sheffield City Region to potential investors.

Rachel is at the Materials Science & Technology Conference & Exhibition in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The conference focuses on industries for which materials innovation represents an important part of their strategic advantage.

Modern manufacturing and technology has been identified as a key area of growth for the Sheffield City Region, and the LEP is focusing on attracting overseas investments in these sectors. The conference is an opportunity for Rachel to show international manufacturers and technology specialists the investment opportunities that our city region can offer.

Rachel recently attended the international AdvaMed 2012: The MedTech Conference in Boston, Massachusetts. Rachel was there to promote the City Region to medical technology industry leaders, business development professionals and the American media. Rachel told delegates at the conference about the Sheffield City Region's strong healthcare sector which is home to a number of key companies, experts and academics in this specialist field.

Over the weekend Rachel held meetings with a number of high profile technology companies in the Pittsburgh area.

Rachel said: "Attending conferences like these is just the starting point for building relationships with significant overseas business investors in these key sectors.

"I believe that any company, from the UK or overseas, who sees the facilities we have to offer and talks to us about the skills and supply chains we have, will recognise the advantages to investing in a City Region where they will be welcomed, incentivised and encouraged to grow their business."

David Grey MBE, of engineering group OSL and LEP board member, added: "In my experience, most business decisions are made through positive business relationships. Prior to Rachel departing for the States, she and I have been working with business leaders in our city region to establish a strong network of contacts, so she can meet with the right people while she's there.

"The relationships that Rachel is building in America, on behalf of our City Region, will generate sales leads for our investment teams, which will result in economic growth and jobs for the city region further down the line."
