News: Liquid nightclub closes

By

The Liquid & Envy nightclub on the edge of Rotherham town centre has closed following a decline in trade.

The previous operators, Luminar Leisure, went into administration in October 2011 after talks broke down with its banks on the restructuring of the group's debt arrangement. A subsequent £45m deal to save the operation included the purchase of the Main Street venue.

The 22,000 sq ft, 2,000 capacity nightclub in Rotherham was put up for sale by Luminar before its administration. The 1.965 acre site also includes 150 car-park spaces and was advertised as an investment and a development opportunity.

The club remained trading throughout but now a message was posted on the club's Facebook page last week reading: "It's with great sadness that we announce that Liquid & Envy Rotherham will close with immediate effect.

"We would like to take this opportunity to say a huge thank you to our fantastic staff and our amazing customers; we've shared some truly unforgettable nights with you over the years x"

Trading figures in the sale documents show that sales decreased from over £2m in the year ending March 2009 to £622,509 in the year ending March 2012.

Chartered surveyors and property management consultants, Gerald Eve was instructed to sell the freehold of the site by the new owners of Luminar following the administration of the original company last year.

A spokesperson from Gerald Eve confirmed this week that they are currently in discussions with a number of interested parties at present.

Rotherham has completely died since liquid envy closed. More and more clubs are closing and Rotherham looks like a ghost town now.
