News: Mock trial date set for New Year
A mock trial is taking place in Rotherham next month to help make businesses aware of their responsibilities, and also the consequences of their actions, when it comes to using vehicles for work.
The South Yorkshire Safer Roads Partnership is organising a free of charge, half day event for local businesses at the Lifewise Centre, Hellaby, on Wednesday January 9.
The Lifewise Centre is used by South Yorkshire Police and partners as an interactive learning centre to deliver safety advice.
Part of the event is a realistic mock trial, which gives attendees a taste of what appearing in court actually feels like. After the sentencing of the company or individual, there is the opportunity for an open session of questions and answers to the panel of specialists.
Paul Costelloe, head of compliance at Sheffield based company, Fulcrum, attended a previous event earlier this year. He said: "I attended the first of these events held in 2012, it was very informative and thought provoking. My colleague and I certainly took something away from the event, which was to think about what we are doing in addressing driving for work, an area of work that is probably our highest risk business activity."
Mike Stanley, South Yorkshire Theme Lead for driving at work added: "Every single business uses vehicles for work, whether they are directors’ cars, company provided cars and vans, through to employees using their own vehicles to assist with their activity.
"There are a lot of misconceptions about what businesses should and should not do in respect to managing their occupational road risk. This important event will make businesses aware of their responsibilities and also the consequences of their actions and how it could affect their business, staff and family.
"At this unique event attendees will have the opportunity to take advantage of specialist help to ensure their business has correct policies, management strategies and training/staff development programmes in place."
Places at the event are strictly limited and are available on a first come, first served basis. To book your free place/s or to make further enquiries please contact Mike Stanley by telephone on 0114 273 6165 or by email at michael.stanley@sheffield.gov.uk
