News: MTL remains amongst UK's fastest-growing exporters

By

Rotherham-based project manufacturing specialist, MTL Group, has again been named amongst Britain's top 100 private companies with the fastest-growing international sales.

Published this weekend, the fifth annual Sunday Times International Track 200 ranks Britain's mid-market private companies with the fastest-growing international sales, measured over their latest two years of available accounts. It is compiled by Fast Track, the Oxford company that researches Britain's top-performing private companies.

Manufacturing specialist, MTL Group rose over 100 places from 150th in 2012 to 30th overall in 2013. In 2014 it has been ranked 98th.

MTL Group is one of Europe's fastest growing project manufacturing specialists in the metal sector and is a global exporter of secondary steelwork. It works with a global blue-chip customer base in the defence, construction equipment, rail and off-shore wind energy sectors.

Supplying international blue-chip customers such as Bombardier, Rheinmetall and BAE Systems, overseas sales rose by 40% in the two years to March 2013 to reach £7.8m. Total sales for the year for the Brinsworth firm came in at an impressive £44.4m.

Ian Stuart, Head of HSBC UK Commercial Banking, said: "The Sunday Times International Track 200 continues to provide an interesting insight into the important contribution privately-owned mid-market companies make to the UK economy, and this year's league table symbolises the dynamism and innovation this group of companies with international ambitions are famed for."

2014 saw Rotherham's C.F. Booth, one of the largest independently run recycling companies in Europe, drop out of the top 200. The £262.7m turnover firm maintained high levels of exports for 2013 but profits were hit by lower metal prices and the weak Euro.

Established in 1920 as a scrapyard, CF Booth now recycles a range of ferrous and non-ferrous products and makes copper-based ingots and forged parts for the marine industry. The company exports throughout Scandinavia and Eastern Europe, Asia, Australasia and South America.

With exports of £18.5m in 2014, entering the International Track 200 for the first time is Rapha, the international cycling brand founded ten years ago by former accountant and marketing executive, Simon Mottram, who was born in Rotherham.
