News: Nuclear supply chain still waiting on Hinkley go-ahead

The Nuclear AMRC has welcomed the news that EDF has confirmed it is ready to invest in two new nuclear reactors at Hinkley Point in Somerset. But the Government is reviewing the billion pound project that it previously called "a milestone in our efforts to reduce emissions and to meet our climate change commitments in the most cost-effective way."

With state of the art facilities on the Advanced Manufacturing Park (AMP) in Rotherham, the £25m Nuclear AMRC is a joint initiative with industry, The University of Sheffield and The University of Manchester's Dalton Nuclear Institute, and is designed to help build and enhance the UK's civil nuclear new build industry.

The two Areva EPR reactors at Hinkley Point C (HPC) will strengthen EDF's presence in the UK, where its subsidiary EDF Energy already operates 15 nuclear reactors and is the UK's largest electricity supplier by volume. With a combined capacity of 3.2GW, the two HPC EPRs will provide around seven per cent of the UK's electricity demand.

The first concrete at HPC is scheduled for mid-2019, coinciding with the scheduled start-up of the EPR at Flamanville at the end of 2018. EDF says the first HPC reactor will generate electricity from the mid-2020s.

In 2015, China General Nuclear Power Corporation (CGN) said it would invest £6 billion for a 33.5% stake in the project. EDF retains the remaining 66.5% of the project. The French group said it intends to bring other investors into the project, but will retain a majority stake.

EDF estimates the construction cost of Hinkley Point C at £18 billion. It expects UK companies to be awarded contracts worth more than 60%of the project's construction value.

Around £1.5 billion worth of contracts were provisionally placed with UK companies ahead of the final investment decision.

The Nuclear AMRC works with UK manufacturers along the supply chain to help them become more competitive, including focused supplier development support through the Fit For Nuclear and Civil Nuclear Sharing in Growth programmes.

Mike Tynan, chief executive officer of the Nuclear AMRC, said: "The Nuclear AMRC welcomes the decision by EDF to move forward with its project at Hinkley Point C. This is a landmark decision for the UK civil nuclear industry and one that shows confidence in the UK's ability to deliver a major infrastructure project for the civil nuclear industry.

"EDF has led the way in the drive for new nuclear power in the UK: it was the first through GDA, site licence, planning consents, and electricity price deals, and is now the first to FID. The Nuclear AMRC has supported EDF's supplier development programmes in its journey for UK EPR deployment, and we will continue to provide every assistance to the Hinkley Point C project as it moves through construction, installation, testing, commissioning and commercial operation.

"The project at Hinkley Point in Somerset will create thousands of long-term jobs in the nuclear industry, engage a wide range of UK suppliers, and deliver much-needed replacement nuclear generating capacity for decades to come."

Following the vote, the UK government announced that it is reviewing its support for the project and will make a decision in early autumn.

Richard Wright, executive director at Sheffield Chamber of Commerce, said: "We absolutely agree that a secure energy supply is critical to the future success of the UK and that must involve new nuclear capacity. But, there are a number of reasons why we are very nervous about the Hinkley Point solution.

"Nearly all of the critical parts of the nuclear reactor, and some of the others in planning, will be made abroad which is not good for long term jobs in the UK, nor for our balance of payments. The high strike price almost guarantees much higher energy costs in the future and this will not be good for all our businesses as they try to build competitiveness in a world economy."

The Nuclear AMRC is also working on research projects and manufacturing studies with the likes of Westinghouse, NuScale and Rolls-Royce on the future deployment of small modular reactors (SMRs) in the UK. SMRs promise to be much more affordable in the UK than the large scale reactors planned for projects like Hinkley Point C, which has struggled to secure investors and has had strike prices inflated by the expense of financing the multi billion pound project.

Wright added: "A lot of work has been done on smaller modular nuclear reactors, much of it locally at the AMRC between Sheffield and Rotherham, and we believe these, in combination with wind, solar and tidal power, should be seriously considered. They have many advantages. They can be made in the UK, they have much better cash flow implications for the country, they do not need as much investment in our energy distribution infrastructure, and the costs and ease of future decommissioning are less."

News: NuScale forges links with Sheffield city region

NuScale Power, an American company pioneering small scale nuclear reactors, is strengthening its links with companies and organisations in the Sheffield city region as it identifies how the new, much more cost effective, sources of nuclear power can be manufactured.

NuScale Power is exploring potential opportunities to enter into partnerships to bring its small modular reactor to the UK market. The company's power module is a 50MWe pressurised water reactor and generator, which can be transported to the site much more easily in quantities of up to 12, providing the facility with a total output of 600MWe.

NuScale Power has announced a new partnership with Sheffield Forgemasters to develop manufacturing techniques for the future deployment of small modular reactors (SMRs) in the UK.

Forgemasters, a founding member of the Nuclear AMRC, will forge a large civil nuclear reactor vessel head based on NuScale's design by the end of 2017. The work will form part of an ongoing research project supported by Innovate UK, the UK's innovation agency, to develop and validate innovative forging and fabrication solutions for the nuclear industry.

The £4m project, funded under Innovate UK's Energy Catalyst programme, has been running since June 2015. It is led by Sheffield Forgemasters, with partners including Rolls-Royce, The Welding Institute, the University of Sheffield, Sheffield Hallam University and the Nuclear AMRC.

NuScale Power will now be an observer in the project, and is providing additional funding to support the use of its reactor vessel head geometry for the demonstration forging.

With state of the art facilities on the Advanced Manufacturing Park (AMP) in Rotherham, the £25m Nuclear AMRC is a joint initiative with industry, The University of Sheffield and The University of Manchester's Dalton Nuclear Institute, and is designed to help build and enhance the UK's civil nuclear new build industry.

The Nuclear AMRC signed an agreement to work with NuScale after the US firm took part in a week-long programme of engagements with key UK nuclear engineering facilities in 2014 (pictured).

In the Autumn spending review, George Osborne announced new funding to develop SMRs in the UK. The Nuclear AMRC is working with the principal technology vendors in support of their drive for a UK small modular reactor and with companies across the UK to help them seize existing opportunities and be ready for the potential of technologies such as SMRs.

SMRs promise to be much more affordable in the UK than the large scale reactors planned for projects like Hinkley Point C, which has struggled to secure investors and has strike prices inflated by the expense of financing the multi billion pound project.

A recent Nuclear AMRC manufacturing study for Westinghouse Electric Company concluded that the UK has the advanced manufacturing capabilities to effectively manufacture reactor pressure vessels (RPVs) - the critical systems for a small modular reactor (SMR).

Tom Mundy, managing director at NuScale, said: "Our vision of seeing the NuScale SMR deployed in, and exported from, the UK can and will only be achieved in partnership with Britain's renowned engineering and industrial base.

"Sheffield Forgemasters' skill, expertise and heritage is known the world over. Working together now is, I hope, the starting point of a lasting relationship that will ultimately see UK-manufactured SMRs generating clean reliable power for the UK grid by the 2020s."

Graham Honeyman, chief executive at Forgemasters, added: "Small modular reactors could revolutionise the civil nuclear power industry by creating more flexible power generation solutions. The efficient factory manufacture of major components will be crucial to seeing them deployed cost-effectively, and Sheffield Forgemasters has an unparalleled track record in the production of civil nuclear forgings of this size.

"NuScale's design is one of the most advanced in the world and this forging project will allow us to prove yet again that UK manufacturing is at the leading edge of global technological advancement."
Rolls-Royce, which secured outline planning permission for a manufacturing facility for nuclear components on the the AMP in Rotherham, is assisting NuScale with several areas of the SMR design with a special emphasis on manufacturability.

The vision is to see NuScale Power Modules being built in the UK for use in the domestic and European market.

NuScale is holding a supplier day at the Nuclear AMRC on July 13 to give UK-based engineering, manufacturing and construction companies the opportunity to learn about the company's programme of work.

News: Nuclear AMRC sign Atkins partnership deal

The Nuclear Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (Nuclear AMRC) and leading engineering consultancy Atkins have agreed to work together on nuclear industry research & development and on support and training for the UK's civil nuclear supply chain.

The £25m Nuclear AMRC is a joint initiative with industry, The University of Sheffield and The University of Manchester's Dalton Nuclear Institute, and is designed to help build and enhance the UK's civil nuclear new build industry.

With state-of-the-art facilities on the Advanced Manufacturing Park (AMP) in Rotherham, the Nuclear AMRC is the focal point for the civil nuclear manufacturing industry in the UK. Part of the government's High Value Manufacturing Catapult, the centre helps to develop capability and competitiveness in the nuclear supply chain through process manufacturing innovation and R&D, driving up quality and reducing cost.

Experts in engineering, design, planning, project management and consulting services, Atkins has a reputation for delivering engineering excellence worldwide including in many countries which are considering adding nuclear power to their energy mix.

In 2008, Atkins acquired Rotherham design engineers, Bennett Associates to strengthen its position in the nuclear sector. The Whiston firm has been involved in the nuclear industry for over 20 years and their mechanical engineering designers have worked on systems for the Sizewell B nuclear power station, lifting frames for nuclear submarines and the design and analysis of nuclear shield doors and restraints.

Atkins and the Nuclear AMRC have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to work together for mutual benefit in areas relating to nuclear research & development, UK civil nuclear supply chain development, and the provision of effective support to the UK civil nuclear industry.

"Both groups will contribute expertise, experience and knowhow to their shared aims.

The Nuclear AMRC has also signed an agreement to work with US-based reactor developer NuScale, on the development of a groundbreaking small modular reactor.

It follows on from a recent visit to Rotherham to discuss the development of a combined containment vessel and reactor system that measures around 25 metres in length by five metres diameter, small enough to be transported by a single lorry, and features state-of-the-art passive safety systems which significantly reduce risks associated with current reactor designs.
