News: Queen’s Award success lifts growth for weighing specialist

By

A Rotherham-based healthcare and industrial manufacturing company has successfully signed up five new international distributors across Europe and South East Asia since their Queen’s Award win for the Marsden Patient Transfer Scale.

The presentation of the award was made to Chief Executive, Mark Holdaway, during a special visit to Marsden by Her Majesty’s Lord Lieutenant of South Yorkshire, Mr Andrew Coombe, who presented the company with the Queen’s Award for Enterprise in Innovation. The presentation was also attended by the Mayor and Mayoress of Rotherham as well as the local Chamber of Commerce.

Marsden earned the prestigious award, in recognition for the work undertaken to pioneer and develop the unique Patient Transfer Scale, which helps to ensure an accurate weight is taken prior to vital life-saving treatment for patients admitted to hospital.

Rothbiz reported on the award success for the Templeborough firm in April.

Co-invented by nurse Gillian Taylor, Marsden worked with its partners including Scottish Health Innovations Limited and NHS Lanarkshire to develop Gillian’s original idea and successfully launched it in 2018. Today, the product can be found in more than 65% of all NHS Trusts across the UK and it is also sold worldwide.

The success of Marsden’s Patient Transfer Scale has coincided with a significant period of growth for the business and has also seen the company create a number of new roles within the business, including the appointment of a new Product and Commercial Director, who will be responsible for developing more new innovative products within the healthcare sector.

Following the success enjoyed with its Patient Transfer Scale, Marsden has also recently launched a new portable weighing scale, designed to help community-based nurses and health visitors take accurate weight measurements of wheelchair-bound patients.

Mark Holdaway, Chief Executive, Marsden said: “Receiving the Queen’s Award for Enterprise from the Lord Lieutenant was, without doubt, the highlight of a very special year for Marsden, one which saw us celebrate our 95th anniversary.

“The success of the Patient Transfer Scale is the result of the observations of a nurse, who spotted an opportunity to solve a patient care problem. Working with our partners we were able to help her transform her initial idea into a highly effective product which helps thousands of healthcare workers across the world to obtain accurate weights for critically ill patients, enabling potentially life-saving medication to be administered. Gillian Taylor continues to work as a Clinical Consultant for Marsden to help engage and support UK and international customers.

“Since securing the Queen’s Award, we’ve not rested on our laurels. We have enjoyed a significant period of growth enabling us to invest in expanding internationally, bring new products to market, create new jobs and ultimately help healthcare professionals to deliver a better patient experience.”

Mr Andrew Coombe, Lord Lieutenant of South Yorkshire said: “The Queen’s Award for Enterprise was created to recognise the outstanding achievements of businesses across the UK and with a long history of innovation and the success Marsden has achieved with its Patient Transfer Scale, the award is well deserved.

“Marsden is a terrific example of the incredible work which is being undertaken by the manufacturing sector in South Yorkshire. The success they have enjoyed is helping to showcase the incredible work being undertaken by businesses across the region.”

Established in 1926, Marsden specialises in producing a range of bespoke weighing solutions to the healthcare, veterinary and industrial sectors. In 2001 the company opened a dedicated manufacturing facility within Rotherham and is a member of the UK Weighing Federation and is accredited by SGS Limited.

News: Go Superfoods wins Queen's Award for International Trade

By

A Rotherham manufacturer and wholesaler of dietary supplements made from the finest of nature's foods, has been awarded a Queen's Awards for International Trade - considered the highest official UK awards for British businesses.

Based at Dinnington, GO Superfoods Ltd trades as Green Origins and Rainforest Foods, and has built a solid growth strategy based on good market research developing a business model to capitalise on that insight which has led to them winning the Queen’s Award for International Trade for its outstanding overseas sales growth.

The firm is a manufacturer and wholesaler of premium supplements and superfoods such as Acai, Hemp seed, Maca, Maqui berry, Spirulina and Wheatgrass.

About half of the turnover is overseas trade and there has been rapid growth in turnover almost quadrupling in the three-year period. A trebling in profits and an increase in staff numbers from four to 23 clearly supports their success.

Started in 2009 by Hardip Singh after completing an MBA, he chose the superfood sector due to personal interest, the growth potential, and the opportunity to work with producers from around the world. The marketing strategy is very well segmented, targeting specific sub-sectors and the spread of countries is tactically focused on those where it can effectively compete and offer a competitive advantage.

To even apply for the International Trade award, companies must have made a minimum of £100,000 in overseas sales in the first year and show year-on-year growth; show that the organisation has achieved outstanding growth in overseas earnings relative to your business size and sector; and show steep year-on-year growth (without dips) in overseas sales over three years - or substantial year-on-year growth (without dips) over six years.

Winners of the Queen's Awards for Enterprise are visited by a Royal representative and are presented with a crystal bowl as a mark of their achievement. They are also invited to attend a reception at Buckingham Palace in July 2016.

News: Roy Hatfield Ltd wins Queen's Award for Enterprise

By

Roy Hatfield Ltd, a Rotherham-based recycling company, has won a Queen's Award for Enterprise 2014, the most prestigious accolades for businesses in the United Kingdom.

The corporate awards recognise outstanding achievements by UK companies in three categories: International Trade, Innovation and Sustainable Development. Roy Hatfield Ltd has won the award for innovation for creating a process for recycling waste gypsum.

Roy Hatfield Ltd was formed in 1971 when the founder Roy Hatfield recognised a demand in the market place for quality and consistent alternative raw materials destined for the concrete industry. The firm grew to become the UK's first and largest manufacturer of decorative and industrial concrete finishing products.

In 1985 the firm moved to Templeborough with a custom manufacturing facility and on site laboratory which is where the company still operates from today.

Anticipating legislation banning gypsum-based waste streams from landfills, the company developed methods for stripping the substance from ceramics and plasterboard.

Plasterboard is made of a gypsum plaster core with a paper facing. Approximately 270 million sq m of product are produced, distributed and used annually in the UK and its use in the construction industry creates a lot of waste through off-cuts and dismantling.

Having researched the market for recycled gypsum, Roy Hatfield established a bespoke facility and created a partnership with a British waste management firm in 2005. Following continual investment and expansion, the Rotherham site processes 50,000 tonnes of waste plasterboard per annum.

The Hatfield process enables organisations to comply with Environmental Agency regulations without incurring the significant expense of using specialist landfill sites and delivers considerable savings to customers, who can buy recycled gypsum at reduced prices. Importantly, it avoids toxic hydrogen sulphide gas from gypsum contaminating bio-degradable waste in landfill sites.

The recycled gypsum is used as a direct replacement for primary or secondary gypsum and can be used to create new plasterboard, in cement manufacture and agriculture. Hatfield uses it to replace talc as a colouring product for its own forms of decorative and industrial coloured concrete. It has been used sympathetically in the 250 year old grade I listed garden at Alnwick Castle and to create the distinctive blue walkways and balconies at the Selfridges store at Birmingham Bull Ring.

Grant Hatfield, director at Roy Hatfield Ltd, said: "We are extremely proud to have been awarded the Queens Award for Enterprise in Innovation. The award acknowledges our dedicated team at Roy Hatfield Ltd — it is because of their efforts we were able to develop such a intricate recycling process on a large, commercially viable scale."

The recycling plant has processed over 300,000 tonnes of waste gypsum to date and the award coincides with the introduction of a third shift allowing 24/7 running of the plant. This new shift will see production ramp up to 1,300 tonnes per week with the company stating that further plans for expansion are still on the cards in the near future.
