News: Business boost helps students end the year in style

By

Over 100 students and special guests swapped the classroom for the ballroom in a unique night of celebration, thanks to the generous support of kind-hearted local businesses.

For many of the students at Rotherham Opportunities College, the end of year prom isn’t just an important rite of passage but a chance to come together with friends and celebrate their achievements. Recognising that for students with special educational needs, entering unfamiliar environments can be a challenging and daunting experience, yet at the same time, with many of the students keen to enjoy the glitz and glamour of an end of year prom, the college turned to South Yorkshire’s business community to create a night to remember.

With 15 prom dresses to source, Goldthorpe-based The Sewing Room stepped in to ensure that every student could feel like the belle of the ball. In addition to donating ball gowns, staff donated their time to make the all-important final adjustments and tweaks, ensuring that every student felt like a million dollars. To complete the experience, students were also treated to pampering, hair and make-up, donated by Whiston-based India Rose Hair and Beauty, where the students headed to enjoy a full salon experience.

Taking place at the Fitzwilliam Arms Hotel, with guests of honour Deputy Mayor Cllr Haroon Rashid and Past Mayor Cllr Sheila Cowan in attendance, students spent the evening dancing the night away, accompanied by a live DJ who played a range of songs especially chosen by the students.

It proved to be a particularly special evening for Asia Munshi, who celebrated her birthday that day. She ended her year at the college on a high, receiving a highly commended award in the supported internship category at the Rotherham Apprenticeship of the Year Awards, before dashing across town to join her classmates at the prom-night celebrations.

Asia’s award was presented in recognition of the work she has undertaken at Crossroads Care, where she trained to become a barista in the charity’s busy cafĂ©, as well as helping out in its busy shop, where she has quickly established herself as a popular and well-loved member of the team.

Dr Perdita Mousley, Principal, Rotherham Opportunities College, said: The end of year prom isn’t just a chance to come together and celebrate achievements, it’s also an important rite of passage for any young person to experience. We wanted all our students to be able to take part and that just wouldn’t be possible without the incredible support we have received from the local business community.

"Each and every business that has supported our prom has gone above and beyond the call of duty, from the dresses and suits that were so generously donated to the amazing help and support provided by the venue on the night, to ensure that everyone who took part enjoyed a night to remember. Without their support and dedication, it just wouldn’t have been possible.

This year has been an incredible year for Rotherham Opportunities College. It was a year that saw us receive a glowing OFSTED report and forge new partnerships and collaborations with businesses and community organisations across South Yorkshire. It was terrific to end the year on such a high, with Asia receiving her highly commended award.”

Rotherham Opportunities College is an independent, specialist college that helps young adults with learning difficulties to build rich and fulfilling lives in adulthood. The college provides tailored education programmes, which take a holistic approach towards understanding the individual needs of each student, helping them to develop the vital skills needed to gain independence and secure employment.

News: Gallery Town refresh for Rotherham

By

In 2025, Gallery Town will officially relaunch across Rotherham town centre, bringing a fresh wave of public art to the streets, with vibrant new artworks appearing on buildings and landmarks.

Rothbiz reported in May on FLUX Rotherham, the Creative People and Places programme which co-creates community art projects and events across the borough, reimagining of Gallery Town, which will see new artworks on display at some of the town’s best-known buildings and places, including All Saints Square, the Three Cranes pub on High Street and the Civic Theatre.

One of the most prominent installations will appear on the side of Rotherham Council's Bailey House, visible from the A630 (Centenary Way). This key site will honour the memory of Daniel Barnett, a gifted young artist and former student of Thomas Rotherham College and Rotherham College of Arts and Technology.

Before his untimely passing, Daniel had been accepted to study at Goldsmiths, University of London. A passionate advocate for cancer awareness, he appeared on national news channels, using his voice to campaign for teenage cancer support. He was also honoured as an Ambassador of Rotherham.

Daniel's artwork, currently displayed as a striking 6m x 6m piece on Bailey House, reflects his deep creative spirit. His work has been shown at prestigious venues including Christie’s and Frieze Art Fair and is held in private collections.

In partnership with Daniel’s family, Gallery Town and FLUX Rotherham are launching a legacy art programme in his name. This annual opportunity invites young artists from Rotherham, aged 16–25, to submit uplifting, joyful 2D artworks for large-scale public display. Each year, one artwork will be selected for installation on Bailey House, ensuring Daniel’s legacy lives on by inspiring and supporting new talent.

Helen Jones, Programme Director of FLUX Rotherham, said: “Over the summer, people will start to see new artworks popping up across Rotherham, as we’re busy working behind the scenes with artists, community groups and schools to create new original works. We’re really thrilled to collaborate with Daniel’s family on commissioning a special piece for Bailey House, drawing on Rotherham’s amazing young talented artists.”

In All Saints' Square a new piece called Rotherham Remix is set to be on display. It was created by 25 students from Bramley Sunnyside Junior School with Ian Kirkpatrick whilst the contemporary artist was exhibiting at Wentworth Woodhouse. The artwork features flying fish, dragons, and robots in a vibrant vision of Rotherham.

Flux Rotherham has secured funding from the likes of the Arts Council and via Rotherham Children’s Capital of Culture.

News: Local providers step up to fusion skills challenge

By

The UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) and East Midlands Combined County Authority (EMCCA) have announced a new twenty-year collaboration to advance fusion energy training and skills development.

UKAEA’s mission is to lead the delivery of sustainable fusion energy and maximise scientific and economic benefit. The Authority selected the Advanced Manufacturing Park (AMP) in Rotherham as a location for its £22m, 25,000 sq ft fusion energy research facility that opened in 2021.

The collaboration will focus on developing and delivering fusion related skills, including apprenticeships and wider vocational training programmes, to support the Spherical Tokamak for Energy Production (STEP) project – the UK’s first prototype fusion energy power plant that will be built on the West Burton site in Nottinghamshire.

This new collaboration will not only provide crucial skills for STEP but also support a growing fusion industry across the region.

The collaboration will deliver fusion-relevant courses through existing training sites across the East Midlands, South Yorkshire, and Greater Lincolnshire. Colleges, training providers, and universities are already mobilising to offer more places for construction and clean energy qualifications, gearing up the region to deliver on its emerging inclusive growth strategy even before the West Burton facility is in place.

UKAEA’s Head of Fusion Skills and FOSTER (Fusion, Opportunities, Skills, Training, Education and Research) Programme Director, Nick Walkden, said: “People are the most important element of any programme or project. We have listened and learned from other major research, engineering, and infrastructure projects and believe that an early and focussed attention to local skills and workforce growth will be a critical enabler to success.

“STEP is a programme with global impact and, as with the successive Governments who have recognised fusion’s potential to have a significant and positive impact on the nation’s economy, we are equally committed to leaving a lasting local legacy. The training provided will equip people across the East Midlands, Lincolnshire, and South Yorkshire with the skills needed for the prototype fusion powerplant at West Burton as well as long-term career opportunities in fusion and beyond.”

Jason Austin, CEO & Principal of the RNN Group, which has facilities in Rotherham and North Nottinghamshire, added: “This collaboration marks a once-in-a-generation opportunity to align education with the future of clean energy. As a local education leader, I’m proud that our institutions will be at the heart of delivering the skills needed for the UK’s first prototype fusion power plant.

"From advanced engineering to cutting-edge construction training, we’re preparing our learners not just for jobs – but for meaningful careers in a globally significant industry. This partnership ensures our region’s young people and adult learners alike have a direct pathway into the green economy of tomorrow.”

News: Plans approved for SEND school at Gulliver's Valley

By

A new school has been granted temporary planning permission to open at the Gulliver's Valley theme park in Rotherham.

The facility, for up to 50 children, builds on a partnership established last year between the operators of the park at Rother Valley and Five Rivers Child Care – a social enterprise dedicated to providing children’s social care and helping young people recover from neglect, abuse, trauma or family breakdown.

The plans involve a change of use of an existing resort services / facilities building which sits alongside the recently opened Skills Street immersive learning destination.

The permission enables the use of the site as a school for students who have Special Educational Needs or Disabilities (SEND) for seven years.

Applicants explained that the proposed River Valley School will "take Five Rivers experience, skills and dedication in independent specialist school provision, and apply that here in Rotherham to the benefit of children in need of SEND school placements.

"The proposed SEND School will be an Ofsted regulated school, regularly assessed to ensure that it is delivering on the needs of children in the region. It will provide 50 student placements, with mixed gender and student age range of 6-18 years old."

The applicant notes that there is an urgent need case for this facility in Rotherham as there is a waiting list for SEND places which cannot currently be met.

The proposal will also provide up-to 40 jobs, across a range of teachers, teaching assistants and care givers.

The reason for the temporary use period is that it allows Gulliver’s to reclaim occupation of the building if it is needed in the future as the park continues to expand.

The main issue for Rotherham Council planners was that the site is in the green belt. Planners conclude: "that the change of use of the existing building preserves the openness of the Green Belt and do not conflict with the purposes of including land within the Green Belt. The re-use of the building is not inappropriate development, as the building is of permanent and substantial construction."

The use as a SEND school is given weight in planning terms as community facilities in the green belt will be supported as they serve the changing need of Rotherham’s communities.

Established in 1989, Five Rivers is one of England’s most experienced providers of children’s social care. It operates independent specialist schools and partners with over 100 local authorities, providing a comprehensive and connected service across five key focus areas: foster care, residential care, education, assessment and therapy and crisis intervention.

Gulliver’s Activity Centre is already in operation, utilising six bespoke cabins in a peaceful wooded area, offering bespoke learning programs in a therapeutic environment.

A brochure for the new school explains: "River Valley will be a happy, safe and welcoming environment, which will allow our pupils to achieve their own academic targets whilst feeling safe, secure and boosting their self esteem."

The plans were approved without going to the council's planning board.

Commenting on the plans, Helen Leadley, Commissioning Manager at Rotherham Council, said: "RMBC Children’s Services commission education placements with Five Rivers. We find them to be child centred and able to meet the needs of young students with complex needs. The Gulliver’s location is beneficial for children’s education as there is plenty of space which allows for flexibility in the delivery of these services."

News: South Yorkshire business leaders urge Home Secretary to support international students

By

South Yorkshire business leaders are urging the government to consider the critical role that international students play in the growth and success of UK businesses when developing the forthcoming Immigration White Paper.

Representatives from business groups across the region published an open letter to Home Secretary Yvette Cooper highlighting the importance of international students to economic prosperity in South Yorkshire, warning that any measures that restrict international students who can come to the UK would harm local businesses and regional regeneration.

The letter – signed by the Sheffield, Barnsley and Rotherham and Doncaster Chambers of Commerce, the Federation of Small Businesses, Confederation of British Industry (Yorkshire & Humber), the Company of Cutlers’ in Hallamshire, the South Yorkshire Institute of Directors and Made in Sheffield – urges the government not to make any changes to international student immigration policy that would have a detrimental impact on businesses in UK towns and cities.

Business leaders outlined their support for the continuation of the Graduate visa route – a visa which allows international students to stay in the UK for two years after graduation, or three years for those with a PhD. This is a key part of UK universities’ offer to prospective international students and enables businesses to benefit from this talent.

Carrie Sudbury, Chief Executive of Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber of Commerce, said: “Upon graduating, international students continue to contribute to the region by working with and for us. The Graduate visa route is an important part of maintaining UK higher education’s competitiveness and can also be a means by which international students use their talent to help grow our businesses domestically and internationally. And, on top of that, they act as advocates for the region when returning home.

“We recognise the long-lasting impact that international students’ soft power has on South Yorkshire.”

The letter follows the publication of a statement by leaders across South Yorkshire, including MPs and the South Yorkshire Mayor, showing their support for international students and the positive impact they have on communities in the region.

The University of Sheffield and Sheffield Hallam University are home to more than 11,000 international students from more than 150 countries.

Sheffield Central is the second highest parliamentary constituency for net economic impact in the UK, with the contribution of international students from both universities reaching £521m, meaning the area was financially better off by £5,800 per person, on average, because of international students.

News: Students celebrate social enterprise café success

By

Visitors to Ulley Country Park in Rotherham are enjoying tasty homemade treats, thanks to a pioneering social enterprise that is helping students with special educational needs and disabilities to prepare for life after college.

Launched last June, the ROC Café was developed through a unique collaboration between Ulley Country Park and Rotherham Opportunities College. Operated by students with physical and learning disabilities and/or autism under the watchful eye of experienced catering co-ordinator, Gaynor Cooper, the café operates every Tuesday and Thursday.

The ROC Café has already helped more than 40 students to develop practical life skills, with the underlying aim of helping them to live as independently as possible in adulthood, as well as securing future employment within the hospitality industry.

Working under supervision, students spend time serving customers, preparing food, as well as learning about customer service.

Many of the tasty snacks and treats sold in the ROC Café are prepared by students in college, using locally sourced meat, fruit and vegetables and bread.

To date, the café has received rave reviews from visitors to the park, as well as achieving a five-star food hygiene rating, the highest available.

The cafĂ© also forms an important part of our commitment towards investing in the local community. Through our collaborations with local businesses, visitors are able to enjoy a wide range of tasty, home-cooked produce, and it’s been truly heart-warming to hear the positive feedback we’ve received from visitors.”

News: AMRC Training Centre targets specific skills gaps

By

The University of Sheffield AMRC Training Centre has launched an enhanced apprenticeship programme, offering employers unprecedented flexibility in shaping the learning journey of their apprentices.

With state-of-the-art facilities on the Advanced Manufacturing Park (AMP) in Rotherham, the centre has trained over 1,700 apprentices, helping to create the manufacturing workforce of the future.

The new bespoke programme will enable businesses to customise their apprenticeships to specific needs through additional modular training options.

Employers can select modules at any point during an apprenticeship, in addition to the apprentice's core curriculum, to address skills gaps and tailor development in line with evolving business and industry demands.

These modular add-ons, crafted by industry-experienced educators, cover a wide range of in-demand skills, including introductory and intermediate CAD, welding, manual and CNC milling, manual and CNC turning, robotics and metallurgy, with additional modules continually being developed.

The add-ons can be integrated into various pathways, from level three advanced to level six degree apprenticeships, and are available immediately.

Nikki Jones, director of the AMRC Training Centre, said: “This enhanced apprenticeship programme, built on bespoke, modular training, is a game-changer for employers looking to shape their future workforce.

“It allows them to take control of their workforce development to precisely target skill gaps, ensuring their apprentices receive the training they need to thrive.

“As part of our commitment to strengthening UK manufacturing by nurturing the next generation of engineers, we are continuously refining our apprenticeship programmes based on employer feedback to address challenges and implement the changes they want. Together, we're building the talent pool needed for the sector to grow.”

In January, the University’s apprenticeship training was rated as ‘Good’ for overall effectiveness and Ofsted recognised the institution's commitment to ensuring the content of its curriculum matches the specific needs of employers which, in many cases, extends beyond the requirements of the apprenticeship standard.

News: Brand-new T Level facilities at Rotherham college

By

A multimillion pound upgrade at RNN Group's college campus in Rotherham town centre has been completed. It has been designed to help create the next generation of skilled employees by overhauling college facilities for T Level students.

The £8m project is bolstered by government-backed capital funding, cutting-edge T Level centres have been created at RNN's Rotherham and North Notts campuses.

The latest renovations have breathed new life into the colleges’ existing spaces. These new-look learning environments have been modernised to the unique demands of the technical qualifications, featuring bespoke classrooms and hands-on learning areas.

Students need a space that gives a seamless transition to working out in the field on placement. Specialist facilities, such as a simulation clinical ward, virtual reality digital suite, high-tech hair and beauty salon, and ground-breaking construction centre, are poised to redefine the T Level learning experience.

Keith Sanderson, director of campus at Rotherham College, said that the T Level projects have been all about improving the student experience. He said: "Whenever we do any work on campus, it’s always with the mindset of ‘will it enhance learning?’ Our vision is to ensure our learners leave college as fully skilled and well-rounded tradespeople.

In return we want our learners to take ownership and responsibility for their new spaces, creating those positive behaviours that make students more employable when they leave college like time management, communication and being proactive.”

T Levels are the new era of post-GCSE learning. The two-year technical qualifications are a popular alternative to A-Levels that combine classroom learning with 45 days of work placements. One T Level is the equivalent of three A-Levels and they are assessed using a mixture of practical tasks, projects and exams.

RNN Group is diversifying its educational landscape by introducing a wide range of T Levels across its three further education colleges. T Levels are now available in areas like construction, digital, education and childcare, engineering, health, and business administration.

In Rotherham a 12-month renovation project at the town centre campus’s Clifton Building has been the biggest project undertaken here in recent years. The £4m construction centre brings all four sub-specialisms of bricklaying, joinery, plumbing and electrical installation under one roof. Previously, the department had been split over two sites: Rawmarsh Road and the Clifton Building.

An old library has been renovated to create a two-storey multi-purpose workshop that is flexible and future-proof.

Each floor houses practical multi-use bays, with workings for bricklaying, joinery, plumbing and electrics so that our construction students can get a flavour of all areas of construction. A new lift can transport building materials up to the relevant floors.

There are breakout areas with IT resources for planning and theory work along with health, safety and welfare lessons. It has a CAD and VR suite with computer-aided design software and virtual reality technology for students interested in site surveying and construction specific drawing techniques.

In the new digital suite at Rotherham College there is a virtual reality suite, gaming room, animation studio, a green room for podcasting. The new digital suite will be used by our future web developers and software engineers who are studying T Levels in digital and digital design and production. It will also be used by students who are studying games design and development.

It also has new cyber labs for use by our cyber security HTQ students when they’re doing hands-on tasks like pentesting and digital forensics.

In the future, other departments from the Rotherham campus will be able to use the VR facilities for their courses, too.

News: South Yorkshire receives Government backing to help build pathways to work

By

A pioneering approach to tackling economic inactivity which aims to get 10,000 South Yorkshire residents back into work over the next four years is set to receive Government funding.

Unveiling the Government’s Get Britain Working White Paper, Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, Liz Kendall MP, confirmed up to £10m of funding for a trailblazer programme that will be led by the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA), focused on improving the support available to people who are economically inactive due to ill health, helping them return to work.

As part of the trailblazer, the South Yorkshire Integrated Care System (ICS) will also become an NHS England Health and Growth Accelerator area, receiving a share of £45m. This will help develop evidence of the impact of targeted action on the top health conditions driving economic inactivity. SYMCA and the South Yorkshire ICS will work together to integrate the support to tackle economic inactivity.

These programmes will build on the recommendations of the Pathways to Work Commission which was led by Barnsley Council in partnership with the SYMCA. The report outlined the need for a proof-of-concept model that brings together work, health and skills support in a radical new approach to help people overcome barriers to employment.

The funding for South Yorkshire, which is part of a £240m cash injection announced in the Budget, will accelerate the rollout of local services for employment support. The Pathways to Work report highlighted that the proof-of-concept model could deliver direct Exchequer savings of up to four pounds for every one spent.

The commission, led by former Health Secretary Rt Hon Alan Milburn, reported this summer and revealed “a catastrophic failure” in the benefits, health and employment system. It highlighted “a chaotic mess” of national and local initiatives and a focus on toughening benefits rules instead of addressing ill health, the primary driver of economic inactivity.

Official forecasts expect working-age health-related benefits to increase from £48 billion in 2023-24 to £63 billion in 2028–29.

Based on the largest-ever survey of people classified as ‘economically inactive’, the commission found that seven in ten people would take a job aligned with their skills, interests and circumstances. However, only one in 10 economically inactive people had demonstrated steps to finding employment.

The commission made a series of radical proposals to help people overcome the obstacles to work with intensive, personalised support and a duty to engage with employment services.

Mayor Oliver Coppard, said: “In South Yorkshire, work, health and skills barriers have prevented people here making the most of their talents for far too long. That’s why we’re has been determined to address those barriers through our pioneering Pathways to Work Commission. The Commission’s report set out recommendations that could unlock the full potential of our communities and I’m really pleased that the Government has backed our pioneering approach.

“In South Yorkshire we have led the way in highlighting the importance of bringing work, health and skills together as we support people back into employment. We now have a Government that understands the importance of devolution and joined-up working, and together we are undertaking the biggest reforms to how we support people into work for a generation.

“Our trailblazer will help us to create a bigger and better economy in South Yorkshire that helps people to stay near and go far.”

Gavin Boyle, Chief Executive of NHS South Yorkshire, added: “We know that there is a strong link between good health and a good job and vice versa. We’re absolutely committed to supporting those in South Yorkshire with a health need to access work or stay in a job if it’s at risk. This is also about fairness, often those with a disability or a long-term health condition live in some of our most deprived communities. So were focussing our efforts where it will help the most. We are already making progress but I’m delighted we’ve been selected as a Health and Growth Accelerator to help us go further faster.”

News: North Star returns to Rotherham

By

The fifth annual North Star Science School event returned to South Yorkshire with Professor Brian Cox CBE FRS, Britain’s leading physicist and science communicator, delivering an inspiring speech to school pupils.

The event brings together young people, educators, scientists and businesses for a day filled with exploration and discovery in the realms of Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics (STEAM).

North Star Science School took place at Gulliver’s Valley Resort in Rotherham and was organised by The Work-wise Foundation, an employer-led and inspired charity, in partnership with 360 Degree Society.

Professor Cox shared his vision to make the UK the best place to do science and engineering. He let the 500+ pupils and their teachers know: "You don’t have to be a genius – science is for everyone. All you need to be is interested, and if you’re interested, then you can do it."

Throughout the day, he met with enthusiastic students and later delivered a speech exploring the wonders of our solar system and galaxies, the possibility of life beyond our planet and the future of science. During his speech, he said: “The only thing we can say for sure about life in the Milky Way galaxy and beyond, is that there is one place where we are certain life exists - Earth. So, it is over to you [students] really in the next 10, 20, 30 years. It would be wonderful if we found that this place is not unique even in the solar system. As it stands at the moment, we’re doing research. Are we alone in the solar system? We don’t know. Are we alone in the Milky Way galaxy? We don’t know. That’s why we use science.”

Following his talk, pupils were able to take part in a number of practical workshops, working alongside (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Maths) STEAM-related businesses. This included testing the cooling rates of melted chocolate with AMETEK LAND and Sheffield Girls’ High School, discovering how homes are designed with Barratt Developments PLC and Brinsworth Academy, testing different designs of paper planes with CBE+ and Newfield Secondary School, exploring engineering with Volker Rail and Hayfield School, an introduction to memory metals with Forge Solutions and Oasis Academy Don Valley, building a simple flying control mechanism with Vulcan to the Sky Trust and Doncaster UTC, exploring the fusion of energy with the UK Atomic Energy Authority and Sheffield Park Academy and learning how bricks are made with Ibstock PLC and Wales High School.

Further workshops were hosted by AESSEAL, the AMRC Training Centre, Army, Cyber Security, E.on with Amazelab, Esh Group, NHS South Yorkshire, Signia Hearing, JJA Snack, Space Detectives, MoSAIC and United Cast Bar in collaboration with Cast Metals Federation.

The event is part of the Science Summer School national initiative co-founded in 2012 by Professor Cox and Lord Andrew Mawson OBE, with the aim of making the UK the best place in the world to do science and engineering.

Peter Edwards, Joint CEO of the Work-wise Foundation, said: “I’d like to thank Professor Brian Cox and Lord Andrew Mawson, whose vision and passion have been instrumental in making North Star Science School a reality. We are also incredibly grateful for the support from businesses and their willingness to share invaluable expertise with the next generation of innovators.”

He adds: “STEAM touches every part of our lives, shaping the world around us and driving the innovations that will define our future.” John Barber, CEO of The Work-wise Foundation, added: “We received some excellent feedback, with teachers telling us that students have gained valuable insights into future careers. Every year, we aim to make North Star even more interactive, with workshops run by businesses and speakers who students wouldn’t normally get the chance to engage with. We were very honoured to have Professor Cox join us here at Gulliver’s Valley – he really did set the tone for a remarkable and memorable day!”

Charlie Smith, Assistant Marketing Manager at AESSeal, said: “This year, we created a seal-building workshop which gave students the opportunity to learn how to build a mechanical seal with different components. This showed students how our mechanical seals go on to make a huge difference to businesses all around the world, saving them money, water, time and much more!”

Beverley Jones, a Teacher from Rawmarsh Community School, said: “The hands-on workshops and inspiring speakers have truly ignited students’ curiosity and opened their eyes to the vast opportunities in STEAM careers. It was wonderful to see them so engaged and excited about learning!"

ESH Group, a sponsor of the North Star Science event shared: “As a proud partner of Skills Street, it was an honour to sponsor this event and help students develop their very own sustainable products while stepping into the role of a sustainability designer, using real-life skills from the Skills Street construction project.”

News: Local firm to build Rotherham school extension

By

The lead contractor has been named for a £3m school extension construction project in Rotherham.

A planning application was approved in June for the extension at Waverley academy on the Waverley estate which is in Rotherham.

The trigger within the S106 Agreement for Harworth Group's large brownfield development has been reached and a financial contribution has been paid to Rotherham Council to enable the extension to be funded and constructed. The authority has secured £3.131m for the project.

Wath-based O&P Construction Services Ltd has secured the contract.

With a total value of £1,893,781, the contract is set to run 40 weeks ensuring that the school can re-open in September 2025.

O&P began back in 1971 and now turn over £20m of projects a year. Education projects include projects in Rotherham such as those at Wath Victoria and Swinton Academy.

The original Waverley school was completed by Geo. Houlton & Sons Ltd in 2020 at a cost of £7m and when the school was originally designed it was done so taking into account that it would be extended to provide a third form.

The plans include six Key Stage 1 and 2 classrooms (three on each floor) along with two library/group rooms (one on each floor) and ancillary toilet facilities. A new nursery room will enable the relocation of the existing nursery room, with associated staff office, storage and extended corridor and entrance. The existing nursery is to become the additional reception classroom.

Council minutes state: "Waverley Junior Academy opened in September 2020 in response to need created for primary school places by a new housing development. It was originally developed as a 2-form entry school, providing 60 places per year group, with the potential for expansion if needed. The school was oversubscribed and this trend was set to continue in future years. Projections based on the pupil yield created during the development indicated that the expansion by creation of a third form of entry would be required to meet need across the local area in September 2025.

"It had been possible to utilise capacity in other schools across the planning area to meet demand to date and it was anticipated that this would remain the case for entry in 2024. Beyond this time the capacity at schools within a reasonable distance would not be sufficient to meet projected demand. The expansion of Waverley Junior Academy was anticipated to meet growing demand for school places across the planning area as a result of new development on the Waverley development and was, therefore, not projected to impact the overall capacity in local schools.

"Under the Section 106 Agreement with the developer, Harworth Group would pay on request to the Council the sum of £2.945m, subject to the Building Cost Information Service index, on occupation of between 1,500-1,700 dwellings. This threshold had now been met with 1,600 dwellings occupied and the amount payable based on the November 2023 forecast was £3,131m."

News: JTL launches new £2m training centre in Rotherham

By

JTL, one of the UK’s leading apprenticeship providers in the building services engineering sector, welcomed John Healey MP to officially open its new training centre in South Yorkshire.

Rothbiz reported in January that the firm had secured approval to convert the former Morphy Richards offices at Adwick Park in Manvers into a vocational educational training centre.

Established since 1990, the not-for-profit Kent-based charity offers advanced apprenticeships in electrical installation, engineering maintenance, mechanical engineering services comprising plumbing, gas alongside heating and ventilating. They serve approximately 8,000 apprentices and 3,800 employers in six regions across England and Wales, providing opportunities via its own estate of 14 training centres and 80 partner organisations.

The charity’s newest training centre will serve as a hub for electrical apprenticeships and training in green technologies. The state-of-the-art facilities are the result of a £2m investment, highlighting JTL’s commitment to delivering high-quality, learner-focused training, addressing local skills shortages, and supporting the UK’s green skills agenda.

The official opening event was attended by John Healey, MP for Rawmarsh and Conisbrough, who unveiled a plaque to mark the occasion and addressed the audience of local employers, industry representatives, apprentices, school students from Wath Academy, careers advisors, and the JTL delivery team about the importance of fostering skills for the future.

The South Yorkshire centre has cutting-edge electrical engineering workshops, classrooms, an End Point Assessment (AM2) preparation workstation, breakout areas, and is set to play a key role in helping the region meet its growing demand for skilled professionals alongside local businesses taking on an apprentice.

Attendees had the opportunity to tour the new centre, meet the first cohort of apprentices, network and learn more about the technical skills being taught, which will include renewable energy systems and electric vehicle charging infrastructure.

The South Yorkshire Training Centre will be a flagship facility for JTL, contributing to the local economy and equipping future generations with the skills needed to meet the UK’s demand for sustainable homebuilding and energy infrastructure, through a specialist ‘Green Hub’ of training for renewable technologies. According to the South Yorkshire Trailblazer Local Skills Improvement Plan (LSIP), future skills needs include addressing replacement demand for an ageing workforce and jobs linked to new technology and construction methods and the drive for net zero. With over £11.8 billion in planned projects for the sub-region – two-thirds (£8 billion) of which will be in the green economy – this includes low-carbon tech, electric vehicles, carbon capture and resilient utilities networks, and will all require highly-skilled electrical engineers.

Across the North East region, where JTL has training centres in South Yorkshire, Hull and York, the industry charity is training approximately 1,800 apprentices in partnership with 1,200 employers.

John Healey MP, who represents the local Rawmarsh and Conisbrough constituency, said: “I am delighted that JTL has chosen Wath as the home of its new South Yorkshire training centre for apprentices to learn their trade. The centre has already created 17 jobs locally through new tutors, administrators and supervisors and the plans are in place to train almost 100 new electrical apprentices from across the borough with an expansion into plumbing courses in the near future.

“Apprenticeships provide our young people with a valuable pathway into critical sectors, allowing them to earn while they learn and develop the essential skills they need for their careers. Our community is full of skilled talent and we are eager for the next generation to be able to pick up a trade and get on in life.”

Sir John Low, Chair of the JTL Board, added: “The opening of our South Yorkshire Training Centre marks an exciting milestone for JTL as we continue to expand our network of facilities to meet local, regional, and national skills needs. This new centre will help to equip young people in the South Yorkshire area with the practical, hands-on experience necessary to succeed in the building services industry, particularly as we move towards a greener economy. We are thrilled to contribute to both the local community and the wider national agenda for skills development and net-zero commitments.”

News: Contractor selected for £60m Rotherham school rebuild

By

Public consultation is underway on a £60m state of the art refurbishment at Wales High School in Rotherham.

Rothbiz reported in 2022 that Wales High School was one of 61 schools across the country to receive state of the art rebuilds or refurbishments that will transform education for their pupils.

With funding from the Government's School Rebuilding Programme the main school building at Wales is set to be completely rebuilt into a state-of-the-art facility. Since the announcement was made, the school has been working with the Department for Education (DfE) to agree on the educational design of the project and the timeframe for delivery.

DfE has chosen BAM as their preferred contractor for the project. BAM, will shortly be submitting a planning application for the development and have begun asking for views on the proposed development before finalising the detailed design.

Sharing the designs, the school said: "The existing school will be replaced and refurbished with energy-efficient designs with high sustainability standards and will be net-zero in operation. The project will transform the learning environment, supporting teachers to deliver high-quality education, so that students gain the knowledge, skills and qualifications they need to succeed.

"The works includes providing new hard and soft sports areas. The new teaching accommodation includes general teaching and science classrooms, together with a new main kitchen and dining space."

Building work is due to begin in 2025 and the new building is expected to be completed in summer 2027. Demolition of the redundant buildings will follow, with all building works anticipated to be complete in Autumn 2027.

The project has been carefully planned to ensure the school can remain fully operational throughout construction and ensure minimal impact on neighbours.

A public forum is being held at the site on September 26 2024 at 4:15 – 7:15 pm.

Previously in the borough, BAM Construct UK was awarded a £10.9m contract to upgrade Maltby Academy. It also built the Advanced Blade Casting Facility (ABCF) for Rolls-Royce and the NUclear AMRC, both on the Advanced Manufacturing Park (AMP).

Last year, Rothbiz reported that Swinton Acadamy in the north of the borough had also been successful in the School Rebuilding Programme.
