News: AESSEAL extend Rotherham United stadium naming rights deal

Rotherham manufacturer, AESSEAL, has extended its partnership agreement for the stadium naming rights at Rotherham United.

With global headquarters at Templeborough, AESSEAL manufactures seals to stop leakage of harmful liquids and gases into the environment for a wide range of industries, including oil and gas, food, water, mining and pharmaceuticals.

The £20m home of Rotherham United was first called The AESSEAL New York Stadium in 2014. The substantial deal worth six figures was signed two years after the stadium opened on the edge of Rotherham town centre.

With one year remaining on the previous five-year agreement, the AESSEAL New York Stadium name will continue until the end of the 2029/30 season.

Chris Rea, managing director at AESSEAL, said: “We are delighted to extend our long-standing association with Rotherham United Football Club and the AESSEAL New York Stadium.

"Over more than a decade, we have built a strong relationship with the club, which in turn benefits the wider Rotherham community.

Some of those may well not be here but for the existence of the club, which has played a vital part in the fabric of Rotherham life since its formation in 1925.

AESSEAL recognises that Rotherham United could receive a more financially attractive offer from another company and, if that occurs, has told the club it would be willing to step aside.

News: AESSEAL helps youngsters Get Up to Speed with the rise of the robots

Rotherham manufacturing firm, AESSEAL furthered its commitment to develop the engineers and industry leaders of the future as Gold Sponsor of Get Up to Speed with STEM (GUTS) for the ninth consecutive year.

More than 7,000 students from across the region attended the two-day event last month – the largest of its type in the region – at Magna Science Adventure Centre in Rotherham.

Organised by The Work-wise Foundation, Get Up to Speed provides a platform for young people to connect with businesses, explore science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) careers, engage with industry professionals, and interact with some of the UK's most exciting innovations.

This year’s theme was Stronger Together: The Power of Collaboration – People, Robots & Productivity.

The event had its first day designed for secondary school aged people and above, with primary school pupils aged eight and over and children with special education needs and disabilities (SEND) touring the exhibition and attractions on the second day.

As well as continuing to invest in talent, AESSEAL has invested in a multimillion pound Factory for the Future - a state-of-the-art, 60,000 sq ft extension that has almost doubled the site capacity. The expansion was coupled with new robots to help the company to increase productivity by automating mundane processes and free up people for highly skilled work.

Much of the talk at Get Up to Speed was about robots and AI.

AESSEAL IT machine learning developer Elliot Fisher told attendees how AI can save time and increase production through working with humans. He said: "At AESSEAL when we talk about AI we talk about it as if it is just another member of the team. We want to give it a clear role with clear borders and transparency with human oversight. It will only do the job we have told it to do and know when to hand control back. AI will do the heavy lifting, and I think that’s what ‘stronger together’ means. It isn’t going to be humans or AI. It is going to be humans and AI.

AESSEAL CAM mechatronics engineer Lewis Hardy said that there was a huge skills crisis in engineering, but AESSEAL had invested £4.3m in robotic cells, and added: “As people we are very good at making decisions and carrying out manual tasks, and a robot is only as good at making decisions as the engineer who programmed it. We are at the very early stages of adapting automation into manufacturing.”

News: Shining a light on a sustainable future at ASD

A commitment to a sustainable future has led to ASD Lighting operating with an impressive 93% UK supply chain.

The Rotherham-based company has established an Environment and Sustainability Policy to grow the business without compromising quality, innovation or market position.

ASD recognises that its activities result in greenhouse gas emissions and waste generation, but is aiming to mitigate these impacts through training staff, investing in innovative and sustainable technology, and working with partners and stakeholders.

Sustainability is about much more than the environment, so ASD strives to have a positive impact on staff, customers, the communities it serves and the locations in which it operates.

The company aspires to be an industry and community leader in sustainability, with directors setting an example through decision making and fostering a culture of continuous improvement.

The aim is to involve and empower staff at all levels through training, engagement, and opportunities for innovation, with employees encouraged to propose and participate in initiatives.

In line with Rotherham Council’s target for the borough, ASD Lighting aims to become Net Zero for greenhouse gas emissions by 2040.

The company has been making progress since 2013 when it installed 600 solar panels on the roof of its Mangham Road factory on Barbot Hall Industrial Estate. Each year they generate around 90,000kWh of electricity and through their use ASD avoids around 18 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions.

Since then, ASD has brought its Powder Coating line in-house, saving approximately 95 per cent of waste powder, which is reclaimed and returned to the process. Carbon dioxide emissions have also been reduced by up to 86% from the process, and a heat exchanger transfers waste heat from the line and uses it to warm the Dispatch Warehouse, reducing the energy required for heating.

The company is a full member and supporter of Recolight, a charity working in the lighting sector to provide expert sustainability advice and has implemented waste disposal and recycling schemes to ensure that no waste goes to landfill.

ASD Lighting employs a dedicated Environment and Sustainability Officer, Greg Bristol, who works on factory, business and product sustainability. Product designers have been trained in circular manufacturing principles and the company has begun work on calculating the embodied carbon in its luminaires, and the circularity of its production processes. Materials with lower carbon footprints are being investigated, with products designed for durability and minimal environmental impact.

Greg said: "ASD, as a locally based UK manufacturing business, has all its operations in one place. This makes it easier to have influence as a sustainability professional. There is a desire within the company to be more environmentally friendly. It is an exciting place to be and to contribute to the sustainability journey.

“We rely on a majority UK supplier base for the components we currently outsource. This improves reliability and continuity of supply, as well as helping to further reduce our transportation emissions.

“We are a relatively small organisation and face many challenges, including the cost of materials and energy, a competitive marketplace, and the need to incorporate sustainability as a core part of doing business.

“I hope we can be an example to other small businesses who find the environmental challenge daunting, that it can be done and that it will benefit those businesses in the short and longer term.”

Rotherham-based AES Engineering Ltd has been presented with the 16th Queen’s or King’s award won by AES group companies.

The Templeborough-based mechanical seal manufacturer and reliability group serving over 100 countries, has received the King’s Award for Enterprise in the sustainable development category.

Previous Queen’s Awards have been achieved by individual parts of the group have included those for exports and technological achievement but this is the first to be won by the overall holding company.

The group’s core products are manufactured in Rotherham and are used by major industries globally to prevent the leakage of liquids and gases into the environment, thereby preventing environmental damage as well as avoiding a health and safety risk.

HM Lord-Lieutenant of South Yorkshire Dame Hilary Chapman recently presented the Grant of Appointment and a trophy bearing the Emblem to managing director Chris Rea at the company’s headquarters.

She said it was the most prestigious award a business could gain and had been for 50 years, with just 199 granted across the UK last year, and 27 in the sustainable development category – AES Engineering being the only South Yorkshire recipient.

Dame Hilary said: "Sustainability isn’t built into the strategy here, it is the strategy and it is the golden thread that runs through everything AES Engineering does.

“It is highly competitive and only 20% of all those who apply are successful. This category is very important and gaining control of the climate crisis was recognised as a high priority by our previous Monarch Queen Elizabeth and our present monarch King Charles.

“You must show unquestionable commitment to sustainability and at AES that is certainly the case. This is the 16th award the company has received but it is the first time the overall holding company has won the award, which is remarkable."

To gain the award a company must demonstrate commitment to sustainable development over two years, have built sustainability into the company’s strategy and be able to show proof of positive outcomes.

Dame Hilary said all of this was evident and picked out the new tree walk at Mill Close, the commitment to spending £29m on environmental projects by 2029, achieving Net Zero every year since 2021 and launching Betterworld.Solutions as highlights.

Vice Lord-Lieutenant Jane Marshall read the award citation, and Mr Rea said the process involved in obtaining a King’s Award had always been extremely thorough and now appeared even tougher.

He said: “You don’t get this award for no reason. You must display forceful evidence of what a business has achieved over a period of time. “As a management team and a group of people we are still up for the challenge of being sustainable and being successful.”

On the announcement of the award in May, he said: “A King’s Award is the ultimate establishment to business award and a huge boost to morale and motivation, but this award is particularly special as it encourages AES Engineering Ltd to continue to invest in sustainability.”

The accolade is valid for five years and means the company can fly the King’s Award flag at Mill Close, use the emblem on stationery, advertising and products.

Rotherham-based AESSEAL has been ranked as the top UK apprentice employer in the manufacturing sector in 2025.

AESSEAL is the largest part of the AES Engineering Ltd group, which operates in over 100 countries. The British-owned group manufactures its core products in Templeborough, and they are used by major industry globally to prevent the leakage of liquids and gases into the environment, thereby preventing environmental damage as well as avoiding a health and safety risk.

AESSEAL was one of a huge number of UK businesses, drawn from more than 20 different sectors considered for the Sunday Times ‘Top 100 Apprenticeship Employers’ awards. The awards celebrate the UK's outstanding apprenticeship employers – recognising their commitment to creating new apprenticeships, the diversity of their apprentices, and the number of apprentices who successfully complete their apprenticeships.

Ranked overall 84th in the top 100, which features giant public and private sector organisations such as the British Army, Grant Thornton and BAE Systems, the Rotherham-based company takes fewer apprentices annually than many of the others in the list with 73 apprentice starts in 2024. However, AESSEAL prides itself on its record of retaining and developing apprentices, some of whom have risen to senior management posts.

Overall, around 20% of AESSEAL’s workforce started as apprentices, and 32 new apprenticeships were started in the 2024-25 criteria period. With an overall placing of 84th out of 100, the company was the top-ranked manufacturer for 2025.

In 2024 AESSEAL came out as the top UK apprentice employer in the manufacturing sector for the second time, according to the Department of Education’s annual rankings.

AESSEAL has signed up employees to 311 apprenticeships between 2017 and July 2025. More than 25 different career paths are now available to apprentices across the UK group, with recent additions including a gardener.

The company says that over the past eight years the cost of apprentice training has been over £7m, including external training fees, mentoring, management costs, and the salary cost for day release training.

A spokesperson for AESSEAL confrimed that it considers the £7,462,294 "not as a cost, but a necessary investment in our future.”

AESSEAL’s Factory for the Future in Rotherham has been officially opened by the former Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, who described the multimillion pound investment as "a temple of innovation."

Mr Sunak said the country could learn from the success of AESSEAL.

AESSEAL is the fourth largest global manufacturer of mechanical seals and equipment and the latest project has expanded its operations at the global headquarters in Templeborough.

Opening in 2023, the project includes the refurbishment and “greening” of existing plant as well as a state-of-the-art, 60,000 sq ft extension that has almost doubled the site capacity. It brings the firm’s total investment in Rotherham to over £61m and it is hoped that the global showcase for sustainable manufacturing will lead to an additional £20m of investment in the Rotherham area over the next five to ten years.

Sunak told more than 200 guests at the Mill Close headquarters ceremony that it was not just about founder and managing director Chris Rea building a “world leading company”, but how he had gone about it.

The Conservative MP for Richmond and Northallerton said: “He has done it in a way that is consistent with how he is. He is a deeply principled man who is committed to making the world a better place than he found it.

"All of you have been part of this extraordinary story of what makes this company special."

Mr Sunak said its growth was a success story the country could learn from, and added: "It is successful because the company defines reliability. You can trust AESSEAL – signed, sealed and delivered. This is a temple of innovation."

AESSEAL was formed with just five employees in 1979, and now serves more than 100 countries with almost 2,000 staff.

The new building reflects AESSEAL’s commitment to creating quality local jobs and ensuring a sustainable future for both the company and the surrounding community. The building is entirely heated by electricity powered by photovoltaics. This has contributed to AESSEAL as a business achieving net zero carbon.

Chris Rea said the building was called the Factory for the Future, not the Factory of the Future, because it represented something that was always evolving and not static.

He pointed to the unoccupied space in the factory and said: "What upsets me most in the world? Pretty close is not having enough customers, but what really upsets me more is not being able to give great service to the customers we have. We built this so our customers could fill it. We have facilities we could close down and fill tomorrow but that is not our style. We make tasks redundant but we never make people redundant. If you have space and you have great people and great customers, you will fill it."

News: Industry and nature grow together at AESSEAL in Rotherham

Nature has moved in alongside industry on a Rotherham factory site which now operates without the use of any natural gas.

A one-kilometre Tree Walk now sits within the ten-acre grounds of the AESSEAL engineering base and will be open to schools for pre-booked trips.

The company, which has pledged to invest £29m by 2029 on environmental initiatives, has decommissioned the last of its natural gas-fired heating systems at its Templeborough site.

Last month AESSEAL invited its first official visitors to the walk, which was opened by Rotherham United chairman Tony Stewart and attended by 28 children from St Bede’s Catholic Primary School in Kimberworth, as well as representatives from the Millers, youth sports clubs, business and education, Rotherham Titans rugby club and Olympic Games silver medallist Peter Elliott.

The youngsters may have been unaware of the company’s wider commitment to ensuring their planet has a future but enjoyed a treasure hunt and witnessed the bug hotels, a pond, meadows and woodlands, a wide variety of trees, a hedgehog crossing and hives for 60,000 bees, which are all accompanied by interactive information and facts available by scanning QR codes.

Early doors visitors have included a kingfisher, a fox and her cubs, and a great tit, who recently hatched six chicks in a bird box installed on the trail, the development of which was tracked through a wildlife camera.

Thirty years ago, the site was little more than unused wetlands and fields of mud, with sparse shoots of grass – and that was after reclamation had prepared the site for industrial development.

The area needed business to create gainful employment, but industry tends to grab nature’s home. The make-up of the area, and the world in general, was changing. Someone had to set an example and look to the long-term future.

AESSEAL managing director and founder Chris Rea said that around 25 years ago William Hague – prior to becoming leader of the Conservative Party – was one of the company’s three board members and asked questions about what could be done with regard to the environment as the area was developed for industry.

The original suggestion was to build a pond within the developing site but, like the company, the project grew beyond recognition.

The scene now is very different. AESSEAL’s Factory for the Future, which contains 175,000 sq ft.of new buildings, stands proudly on the land – and alongside it runs the walk.

What may have once been viewed as a contrast serves as a visible, tangible example of how industry and nature can grow together and live with each other to provide the planet with a chance of long-term survival.

Mr Rea said: “It's something that has been created over a long period, and we've just enhanced it and developed it and planted more and more trees and added more attractions like wildlife sculptures, the seal family, brass etching stations, wildlife and plant life boards, as well as providing a home for rescue hedgehogs and bees. Add to that a treasure hunt and we have a fun and educational amenity aimed at primary school children.”

Prior to its official opening staff have been using the facilities – including a picnic and meeting area – which have cost hundreds of thousands of pounds to create and develop. It’s a relaxing, peaceful place to sit and enjoy lunch or to take in the fresh air.

Mr Rea says: “Some people really love it and come out every day. We even have colleagues who come in the depths of winter and put warm clothes on and go and sit at one of the benches, play chess or have their flask of coffee. People like it.

“I think most companies fail to understand that the soft issues, how people feel, their mood, their morale and motivation is just as important as monetary matters. People want to work with nice people, they want to feel that the company they are with is doing more good than bad. The value of high levels of motivation is immeasurable but provides tangible results.”

Mr Rea hopes the company’s work will persuade others to follow its example and adds: “If you pursue excellence, there’s nothing excellent about destroying the environment. There’s nothing excellent about not being a good corporate citizen. There’s nothing excellent about not doing what you can do to continuously improve things. It’s just what we do.” Chris ensures the company is as good as his word.

Replacing old cladding and roofing with new materials has now resulted in the thermal energy balance being sufficient for the site to utilise as much power as possible from the building’s 3,000 solar panels and 2.2MW of batteries.

This means the gas supply will be decommissioned by the utility company in the next few months and there will not even be a supply left on the site.

News: Rotherham firms earn King's Award for Enterprise 2025

Two Rotherham-based companies have been named as recipients of The King’s Awards for Enterprise, recognising their vital role in growing our economy to improve lives.

For 2025, first time winner, International Energy Products, joins AES Engineering Ltd with the 16th Queen’s or King’s award won by AES group companies.

Based at North Anston, International Energy Products specialises in the production and manufacture of nickel alloys, stainless and low alloy products. Established in 2017 it is part of the International Group of companies which engineer, manufacture, and test high-quality steel products for the energy and defence sectors.

The company has been recognised for international trade. It exports to Europe, the US, Middle East, China and India, and sales reached £7.1m in the year to March 2024. Exports have helped annual sales grow by 122.03% over the last three years.

AES’s seal support systems have prevented enormous quantities of water being unnecessarily consumed in industrial processes. A total of 42,000 of these systems have been installed around the world over the past decades, saving an estimated 1.6 trillion litres of water – enough to supply the population of South Yorkshire for over 20 years.

These and other savings by companies using group products translate into a reduced carbon footprint and better environmental record by significant sectors of global industry, far outweighing AES’s own direct and indirect energy use, and the cost to the environment of the group’s supply chain.

The AES Engineering Ltd group achieved Net Zero on all scopes in its global operations in 2021 and to date has committed £21m in environmental investments.

The group’s Net Zero calculations, verified by the leading standards body, BSI, show that its global operations had a net benefit to the environment during 2021-24 equivalent to more than 1.1 million tonnes of CO2e saved. That’s approximately the same as the CO2 absorbed by 15 million trees over the same period.

The AESSEAL Factory for the Future in Rotherham has been shortlisted for a regional award that celebrates excellence in architecture.

AESSEAL is the fourth largest global manufacturer of mechanical seals and equipment and the latest project has expanded its operations at the global headquarters in Templeborough.

It brings the firm’s total investment in Rotherham to over £61m and it is hoped that the global showcase for sustainable manufacturing will lead to an additional £20m of investment in the Rotherham area over the next five to ten years.

The new building reflects AESSEAL’s commitment to creating quality local jobs and ensuring a sustainable future for both the company and the surrounding community. The building is entirely heated by electricity powered by photovoltaics. This has contributed to AESSEAL as a business achieving net zero carbon.

The AESSEAL Factory for the Future by Race Cottam Associates Ltd is one of seven projects that have been shortlisted for the RIBA (Royal Institute of British Architects) Yorkshire Awards 2025.

The shortlist for the RIBA Stirling Prize – the UK’s best new building – will be drawn from the RIBA National Award-winning projects and announced in September. The Stirling Prize winner will be announced in October.

WilkinsonEyre won the RIBA Stirling Prize in 2001 for the transformation of a redundant steelworks in Rotherham to create the UK's first Science Adventure Centre at Magna.

News: North Star returns to Rotherham

The fifth annual North Star Science School event returned to South Yorkshire with Professor Brian Cox CBE FRS, Britain’s leading physicist and science communicator, delivering an inspiring speech to school pupils.

The event brings together young people, educators, scientists and businesses for a day filled with exploration and discovery in the realms of Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics (STEAM).

North Star Science School took place at Gulliver’s Valley Resort in Rotherham and was organised by The Work-wise Foundation, an employer-led and inspired charity, in partnership with 360 Degree Society.

Professor Cox shared his vision to make the UK the best place to do science and engineering. He let the 500+ pupils and their teachers know: "You don’t have to be a genius – science is for everyone. All you need to be is interested, and if you’re interested, then you can do it."

Throughout the day, he met with enthusiastic students and later delivered a speech exploring the wonders of our solar system and galaxies, the possibility of life beyond our planet and the future of science. During his speech, he said: “The only thing we can say for sure about life in the Milky Way galaxy and beyond, is that there is one place where we are certain life exists - Earth. So, it is over to you [students] really in the next 10, 20, 30 years. It would be wonderful if we found that this place is not unique even in the solar system. As it stands at the moment, we’re doing research. Are we alone in the solar system? We don’t know. Are we alone in the Milky Way galaxy? We don’t know. That’s why we use science.”

Following his talk, pupils were able to take part in a number of practical workshops, working alongside (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Maths) STEAM-related businesses. This included testing the cooling rates of melted chocolate with AMETEK LAND and Sheffield Girls’ High School, discovering how homes are designed with Barratt Developments PLC and Brinsworth Academy, testing different designs of paper planes with CBE+ and Newfield Secondary School, exploring engineering with Volker Rail and Hayfield School, an introduction to memory metals with Forge Solutions and Oasis Academy Don Valley, building a simple flying control mechanism with Vulcan to the Sky Trust and Doncaster UTC, exploring the fusion of energy with the UK Atomic Energy Authority and Sheffield Park Academy and learning how bricks are made with Ibstock PLC and Wales High School.

Further workshops were hosted by AESSEAL, the AMRC Training Centre, Army, Cyber Security, E.on with Amazelab, Esh Group, NHS South Yorkshire, Signia Hearing, JJA Snack, Space Detectives, MoSAIC and United Cast Bar in collaboration with Cast Metals Federation.

The event is part of the Science Summer School national initiative co-founded in 2012 by Professor Cox and Lord Andrew Mawson OBE, with the aim of making the UK the best place in the world to do science and engineering.

News: Progress for latest firms expanding onto the AMP in Rotherham

Steelwork erection has completed at the Advanced Manufacturing Park (AMP) in Rotherham on the new development for Technicut, the global leader in solid rotary cutting tools for the aerospace industry.

Rothbiz reported last year on plans for a purpose built unit for Technicut to go alongside McLaren.

Construction firm, Britcon, has been appointed to work alongside The Harris Partnership on a 86,800 sq ft warehouse and progress is being made.

The value of this contract is £9m with an anticipated end date of March 2025. Britcon is aiming to achieve a BREEAM status of Excellent for the dedicated building comprising a mix of production, lab, office and meeting room space.

The new location will enable the company to remain local to its origins whilst providing the space it needs to further grow the business.

Also at AMP, a planning application has been approved for a purpose built unit between Brunel Way and the Parkway for Vulcan Engineering Ltd.

Currently based in Sheffield, Vulcan Engineering Limited is part of the wider AES group and specialises in the production of mechanical seals and encapsulated ‘o’-rings. The company has a global presence and is an established world leader in the development and manufacture of high purity, composite encapsulated seals that fulfil a demand in the market where an engineering polymer is either not available or is extremely cost prohibitive.

Having doubled their turnover in the last five years from £15m to £30m as a Group on sealing products, the move is part of expansion plans where turnover is forecasted to increase to £60m within the next five years.

At 52,000 sq ft, the new development would create 110 jobs.

Also fronting the Parkway, work is closer to completion on a new headquarters for global steel business Danieli. The Italian-based group – which has annual revenues of £3.6bn and designs, builds and installs low emission plants for the steel industry worldwide as well as producing quality special steels – commissioned a 47,000 sq ft head office, research and distribution facility having outgrown its site at Templeborough.

Units 8, 9 and 11 on the AMP have also been completed. Landowner and developer Harworth Group has already confirmed that 60% are now let with the remaining entering negotiations.

News: AES is top UK apprentice employer in manufacturing again

Rotherham-based AESSEAL is the top UK apprentice employer in the manufacturing sector for the second time, according to the Department of Education’s annual rankings.

AESSEAL is the largest part of the AES Engineering Ltd group, which operates in over 100 countries. The British-owned group manufactures its core products in Templeborough, and they are used by major industry globally to prevent the leakage of liquids and gases into the environment, thereby preventing environmental damage as well as avoiding a health and safety risk.

The Top 100 Apprenticeship Employers and Top 50 SME Apprenticeship Employers showcase the apprenticeship employers that have done the most to provide apprenticeship opportunities over the past 12 months.

AES was one of 700 major UK businesses assessed, drawn from the public and private sectors, and while the company’s apprentice intake during 2023-24 was significantly lower than many of the other entrants (number 1 was the British Army with over 4,000), AESSEAL was in the top 7% of all of those assessed, based on criteria including diversity and apprentice completions.

AESSEAL managing director Chris Rea said: “Getting and keeping great people is a key part of our formula for business success and this accolade shows the Department of Education rankings are not purely a numbers game.

Lucia Bird, CAM Apprentice at AES, added: “I started my apprenticeship in September 2020, studying at the AMRC. I then went on to work full time at AESSEAL. I began working volume production as a CNC machinist and was able to work on different machines that allowed me to gain experience and progress through the company. Also, I had many opportunities to attend different events to interest new apprentices in the company, which I thoroughly enjoyed.

"Engineering has always been a male dominated industry. So, as a woman starting out in engineering it is great to be part of a team at AESSEAL, they’re such an inclusive company to work for. I would recommend it as a career path for any young woman.”

Overall, 14% of AESSEAL employees started as apprentices, and 39 new apprentices were taken on in 2023-24. With an overall placing of 50th out of 700, the company was the top-ranked manufacturer for the second time, after a similar placing in 2022.

First compiled in 2020, the prestigious annual employer rankings have been developed by the Department of Education, in partnership with High Fliers Research, who independently assess and rank the nation’s top apprenticeship employers.

Last year the deal enabled the Millers to have the Rotherham Hospice logo proudly emblazoned across the chest. For the the 2024/25 season, the kits will feature another Rotherham charity, Bluebell Wood Children's Hospice.

News: South Yorkshire Institute of Technology official launch

The South Yorkshire Institute of Technology has been officially launched, creating a partnership to deliver world-class technical education and training.

Backed by more than £21m in funding from the Department for Education, the establishment of SYIoT in South Yorkshire marks a significant milestone for the region, kite marking the high-quality, higher-level technical education and training provision in the region.

One of only 21 IoTs nationally, the launch marks a major investment and recognition of the region’s higher education providers.

The education partners are DN Colleges Group, Sheffield Hallam University, Barnsley College, The University of Sheffield AMRC Training Centre, The Sheffield College and RNN Group.

With the pace of change and emerging technologies, the investment in South Yorkshire will ensure that education providers have access to facilities and equipment that can support them to prepare and develop individuals with skills that meet employer’s needs.

IoTs are partnerships of employers and education providers. SYIoT is supported by core employers of HLM Architects, AESSEAL Plc and Pendo.

SYIoT already works with over 5000 employers in the region but a key focus will be extending the reach, particularly to small and medium sized businesses.

The sector focus for SYIoT are the technical sectors of engineering and manufacturing, digital, construction and the built environment, health, science and media and communications.

News: Engineers of tomorrow gather for massive skills event in Rotherham

5,500 pupils and educators from across the South Yorkshire region were given a unique insight into careers in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Manufacturing) at the recent ‘Get up to Speed with STEM’ event, which was held at the Magna Science Adventure Centre in Rotherham last month.

The annual event, the largest of its kind in the region and now in its 14th year, brought together dozens of businesses, colleges and organisations to showcase the wide variety of different career options that are available to young people in South Yorkshire, as well as letting them get involved in problem solving challenges and interactive activities. Young people were also given the chance to see some of the UK’s most exciting STEM innovations and meet the people who design, build and operate them.

John Barber, CEO of The Work-wise Foundation (organisers of the event), said: “Get up to Speed has been a phenomenal success this year. Every year the event gives young people the chance to get a real-life experience of the world of work from local businesses, whilst being able to speak to apprentices, employees and business owners about the career pathways they could take to lead to a wide variety of roles.

“Every year we receive some great feedback from teachers about how Get up to Speed really does inspire pupils with ideas that shape their future career. We understand that it can be difficult for young people to find out about businesses and careers they may be interested in, so by bringing them all together at Get up to Speed, our aim is to overcome any obstacles and break down barriers to accessing career opportunities.”

Get up to Speed with STEM also gives companies taking part the opportunity to showcase their expertise, highlight career options and current vacancies and meet with other businesses, whilst helping to address the skills gaps across the sectors.

Pupils and teachers had the chance to explore the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) through an immersive 360-degree virtual tour, enabling them to understand how the largest general purpose particle detector experiment in the world works. This unique attraction came about as a result of the National Videogame Museum teaming up with the University of Sheffield and CERN in Switzerland.

Visitors also had the opportunity to try out a wide range of diverse activities from metal casting with United Cast Bar, Water Quality testing with the Canal and River Trust, wall building with Esh Construction to using a heat press for clothing with SBD Apparel and E sports with The British Army.

Three award celebrations took place during the day, including Vulcan to the Sky, AMETEK Land and the High Sheriff’s Building a Better Future Together Challenge. These mini events celebrated the success of pupils that took part in competitions with businesses in the run-up to Get up to Speed.

In addition, Stream 7, a video production company based in Sheffield, created GUTS TV, which ran throughout the day, giving pupils the unique opportunity to get involved with the video production and editing process.

Get up to Speed started with a Business Breakfast, themed this year around “Health and Wellbeing for Skills and Productivity”, which was opened by the Master Cutler, Charles Turner DL, with keynote speaker Jason Brannan, Deputy Director of the Advanced Wellbeing Research Centre in Sheffield. Richard Caborn, former Minister for Sport and Civil Society, provided closing remarks.

A pioneering initiative is underway as the South Yorkshire Innovation District, in collaboration with industry leaders, announces the start of a pilot ‘Innovation Challenge’ aimed at transforming manufacturing practices through the practical application of regional innovation capabilities.

This joint effort, supported by the business community, South Yorkshire Innovation District, Four Jaw Analytics, and Made Smarter, boasts a collaboration with prominent industry partners including Gripple, AESSEAL, PEP GB, Amodo and the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC).

The initiative underscores a collective commitment to foster innovation-led growth and tackle challenges faced by manufacturing SMEs in South Yorkshire. Originating from the Innovation District Business Network established in 2022, the initiative aims to drive a more prosperous regional economic outlook by facilitating practical solutions and access to new opportunities.

The Innovation Challenge targets energy optimisation and operational efficiency improvement within participating SMEs. Following receny agreements in Chile and Australia, AES is joining with Torishima Japan Co., Ltd to create a new company, AESSEAL-Torishima Japan Co Ltd to serve the country wide industrial customers in the territory of Japan. Employees from both organisations have come together to provide a product and service support network for all industrial segments with operations being initially based from Torishima’s headquarters in Osaka.

News: AESSEAL launches key Chilean partnership

The Rotherham-based AES Engineering Group Ltd has established a strategic partnership in Chile, joining forces with ALTE Industrial S.A. as part of the group’s ongoing global growth strategy.

The multi award winning Templeborough company designs and makes mechanical seals and support systems for a wide range of global industries including oil and gas, food, water, mining and pharmaceuticals.

Under the terms of the deal, ALTE Industrial S.A., which formed in Santiago, Chile in 1991, has acquired a minority stake in AESSEAL CHILE operations to serve the country wide major industrial customers and especially their important mining and minerals sector in which AESSEAL commands a leading global position.

The UK-based Group, which owns AESSEAL, the world’s largest homogeneous designer and manufacturer of mechanical seals will make the entire product and service portfolio of both AESSEAL and AES Sealing products available to serve the Chilean sealing market to the highest global standards.

This move means key employees from AESSEAL, and ALTE Industrial S.A. will come together to create a new strengthened local AESSEAL organisation uniquely placed to provide a country-wide product and service support network for all industrial segments.
