News: Yorkshire manufacturers enjoying strong demand

By

Yorkshire and Humber manufacturers are continuing to see strong conditions with increasing confidence being reflected in recruitment and investment intentions, according to a major survey published today by EEF, the manufacturers' organisation, and business advisers and accountancy firm BDO LLP in Yorkshire.

According to the survey, manufacturing output and orders remained strong in the final quarter of the year with positive balances of +22% and +32% respectively. This is resulting in increased demand for skilled people with a recruitment intention balance of + 19% for the last three months, compared to the forecasted +12%.

The percentage of Yorkshire manufacturers intending to take on staff remained strong at 20% for the first three months of the year, thanks to expected further increases in output (+44%) and order balances (+35%) in Q1 2014.

EEF is forecasting that this picture will continue into 2014 with the sector growing by 2.7% in 2014 compared to 2.4% for the economy overall. The improved performance during 2013 has also resulted in EEF revising its forecasts for this year, showing manufacturing contracting by just 0.1% and the economy growing overall by 1.4%

Andy Tuscher, Yorkshire region director at the EEF, said: "Over the course of the year we have seen a definite turnaround in prospects for manufacturing and this looks set to continue into next year.

"This increased confidence is evident in companies looking to increase their headcount and, most importantly for balanced growth, step up their investment. However, uncertainties in the global economy remain and a sustained recovery is not secure. As a result, growth must remain a priority for government over the remainder of this parliament, starting with the Autumn Statement this week."

Jason Whitworth, partner at BDO LLP in Yorkshire, added: "Continued strong demand within the domestic market is very encouraging and this does suggest that a sustainable manufacturing recovery has gained a foothold in the region.

"However, international markets hold the key to a fully-fledged and meaningful improvement and these markets remain frustratingly fragile. We haven't missed the boat yet, but companies need to stand ready and be supported by an accessible Government-backed export framework in order to take full advantage of the recovery on the continent and beyond."

The Regional Language Network Yorkshire & Humber (RLNYH) has arranged an exciting range of events aimed at supporting Rotherham businesses looking to trade across the world.

Highlighting the fact that businesses that are proactive in their use of foreign languages achieve on average 45% more export sales, the RLNYH aims to assist in the building of new global markets through language learning, cultural skills, international communication and funding advice for businesses.

The RLNYH does this by offering support to businesses in order to improve their international communications including translations, interpreting, language training, cultural differences, and web localisation.

The half day events will cover topics such as international branding, selling and marketing to Europe, international e-marketing, doing business with Russia and an introduction to business Chinese.

Following a recent seminar for Business Link, Ruth Linden from RLNYH said: "We've purposely designed the seminars to be highly interactive. This not only allows delegates to explore and discuss their planning but it is also an excellent way for everyone to meet with each other and make useful business contacts.

"It has been great to see businesses swapping business cards and discussing ideas for collaboration at the end of each seminar."

NatWest and RBS have announced that they are to make an additional £250 million funding available to SMEs in Yorkshire in 2009. This further commitment to the SME sector in Yorkshire will be delivered through a comprehensive package of funding choices with effect from today. In addition to providing traditional debt finance, the new funds will offer businesses the opportunity to access other avenues available to help them manage their capital and cashflow through the current economic downturn. The new locally administered fund will offer customers a wide range of financial support including flexible business loans which allow customers to postpone capital repayments, invoice finance products which may guarantee debtor payment, effective ways to release cash through using the assets already owned by the business and short term trade finance essential to keep imports and exports flowing. The fund will also offer SME customers lower priced loans from the £250m funding the Bank has recently secured from the European Investment Bank. Rosie Winterton MP, Minister for Yorkshire and the Humber, said: "There are over 300,000 SMEs located in Yorkshire and the Humber and I welcome this funding at a regional level to support businesses in these challenging times. It is an important step in helping get our region through the current challenges" Tony Kelly, Managing Director NatWest and RBS Business and Commercial Banking for Yorkshire, commented: "The Yorkshire and Humberside economy has been calling out for such an initiative. We believe that bolstering SMEs access to finance is a most promising avenue to cushion the impact from the downturn. That is because SMEs are the lifeblood of our regional economy - helping them is to help everybody." Tom Riordan, Chief Executive of Yorkshire Forward said: "We welcome this announcement, and anticipate that the move will act as an economic stimulus, helping to boost business confidence. News: Upskilling the region's workforce

By

The Yorkshire Post report on the issue of skills in the region, with Minister for Yorkshire, Rosie Winterton, stating that it was one of her top priorities. Ms Winterton is putting together a team of "business ambassadors" – elite businessmen and women who will take a lead in ensuring employers have the skilled workforce they need, now and in the future. She told the paper: "As regional minister this is an extremely high priority for me – it's absolutely vital for the future competitiveness of the region. "In a global economy we have to show we are world leaders in having a workforce which is highly skilled. We must not just stop educating people when they enter the workforce. "When people are looking at where they might invest they do look at what kind of commitment there is to ensure the workforce are skilled." The minister will be working closely with the Regional Skills Partnership which brings agencies and partners together under the themes of employability, skills and business support. The paper also states that the minister has written to each local authority asking it to sign up to the Skills Pledge, a public commitment to investing in training.
