News: Business events at the AMP Technology Centre

The AMP Technology Centre on the Advanced Manufacturing Park in Rotherham is hosting an intellectual property event this month looking at making innovation work and making innovation pay.


In the free two hour seminar, Matt Symonds, director of TBAT Innovation and Paul Foot, a partner at patent attorneys Withers & Rogers will show companies how to make the most of the upfront and often costly investment in research and development.

The seminar focuses on practical strategies for managing the innovation process, assessing the results and using intellectual property (IP) as a way of extracting value.

The concept of the innovation process will be outlined including: what it looks like, how to implement and measure it and what benefits it can deliver to an organisation.

Among the exploitation models explored will be the classical fortress and licensing models, the "monopoly-in-a-box" and a number of hybrid solutions borne out of the others.

The event takes place on November 18.

The Manufacturing Advisory Service for Yorkshire & Humber (MAS) has organised an event at the centre focused on Manufacturing for Low Carbon Buildings.

This free half day event on November 23 is aimed at manufacturers of products used in the building and construction supply chain and aims to provide simple ideas about how to capitalise on the Low Carbon Building agenda and keep ahead of competitors.

The event features networking opportunities and seminars from companies and organisations including Construction Sector Network Y&H, University of Leeds Nanofactory, Eco3 Design and the Keepmoat Group.

The AMP Technology Centre is also hosting an investment forum with the Yorkshire Association of Business Angels (YABA) on November 23.

Sponsored by Sheffield's Nabarro LLP, the invitation-only event will see up to ten of the regions entrepreneurs introduce their business proposals to an audience of business angel investor members, associate members and intermediaries from the professional community.

News: Fripp Design strengthens senior management team

Rotherham-based Fripp Design and Research, one of the UK's leading product design, research and business consultancies, has appointed Charles Turner, managing director of Sheffield based knife manufacturer Durham Duplex, as non executive chairman.

The appointment reflects Fripp Design and Research's plan to launch a manufacturing facility.

Turner, who is also chairman of Made in Sheffield, will assist in guiding the company through the transition from service delivery provider into manufacturing.

Fripp Design and Research's original mission was to develop its own Intellectual Property (IP) and license it to third parties. The company has subsequently identified that there is a strategic opportunity for it to use its Research, Design and IP expertise and combine it with in-house manufacturing, to deliver innovative concepts and solutions.

Sue Roberts, director at Fripp Design and Research said: "Charles' wealth of experience and network of contacts will be an invaluable asset. He will not only bring an objective perspective, but will also provide the checks and balances needed to help us deal with the challenges that lie ahead."

It has also seen turnover more than double in the last financial year and has ambitious plans for further sustained growth.

News: Business opportunities in a low carbon future

Leading intellectual property attorneys, Mathys & Squire LLP are hosting a free event in Rotherham this month on how businesses can develop and protect ideas for low carbon and energy saving technologies.

The event is aimed at all SMEs within South Yorkshire and is open to anyone from any sector and will include a series of presentations by experts in research,
technology, investment and intellectual property.

Break out sessions on the day will give businesses the opportunity to discuss ideas in confidence.

In attendance will be a specialist team of intellectual property attorneys dedicated to identifying and safeguarding new, clean energy and low carbon technology.

Also in attendance will be representatives from Isis Innovation, a wholly-owned subsidiary of the University of Oxford, founded to exploit know-how arising out of research at one of the world's premier research institutions.

Representatives from Morgan Linley, the Yorkshire Association of Business Angels, EA Technology Ventures, Energy Innovation Centre and CO2Sense Yorkshire will also be on hand.

Ben Wyatt, of organisers Mathys & Squires, said: "The innovative technologies which will deliver the necessary carbon savings needed to reduce manufacturers' overheads and their environmental impact may already exist in a basic form.

"Our challenge is to uncover the processes in use, and work out how they can be made more efficient. It's possible that, in a Yorkshire factory, someone has implemented a money-saving solution on a small scale that could be commercialised and save money on a much larger scale.

"This event is about tapping into the manufacturing knowledge base here to see if anyone has an idea that could make them money – and help UK plc become more energy efficient."
