News: Mace makes shortlist for director awards

By

Jason Mace, managing director of Rotherham-based marquee and gazebo manufacturer Gala Tent, has been shortlisted for the prestigious Institute of Directors (Yorkshire and the Humber) Director of the Year Awards 2014.

The IoD is the UK's longest running organisation for professional leaders and the awards recognise the region's top business leaders. Jason faced strong competition from dozens of other directors across the region to receive a place on the shortlist, which will be announced at a ceremony held on May 1 at the Queens Hotel Leeds. The regional winner will then go through to the awards ceremony in London in October.

Jason, who started the business with £2,000 debt on his credit card 14 years ago has grown Gala Tent to be one of the largest manufacturers of marquees and gazebos in the UK. He revolutionised the marquee market by introducing to the UK the idea of buying rather than hiring marquees for people to use for parties at home, making them affordable for the first time and creating a trend towards entertaining in the back garden or patio.

The IoD recognised that over the past 14 years, Jason has helped to establish over 100 marquee hire companies across the country, which have seen great success creating several hundred jobs, particularly valuable against the backdrop of the recession. In the past two years, Jason has acquired 53,000 sq m purpose built site in the Dearne Valley, providing room for the company's planned expansion over the next five years.

Jason Mace, managing director of Gala Tent, said: "It is a fantastic feeling to be shortlisted for this prestigious award. I have a great team behind me at Gala Tent, but it is great to be recognised for my individual achievements and I will be keeping my fingers crossed for the regional final."

Founded in 1999, Gala Tent has grown to sell over 10,000 tents and marquees each year, along with around 90,000 event accessories and furniture products. In the UK, Gala Tent is a preferred supplier for organisations including the military, NHS, the South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service, South Yorkshire Police Service, St John's Ambulance and AA.

The company's workforce has gown to over 30 employees and an Apprentice Mentor scheme has been developed, in which the company is investing in developing its own talent.
