News: Placement partnership success at PointSolutions

By

Dearne Valley College (DVC) is hailing the success of its partnership with Rotherham-based firm, PointSolutions, which has led to students undertaking valuable work experience and securing employment with the company.

Based at RIDO's Century Business Centre in Manvers, the enterprise is an accredited Microsoft SharePoint specialist, providing integrated collaboration and business process applications, such as human resources, training, health and safety and intranets.

As part of the college's Work Placement scheme, PointSolutions takes on students to experience a real working environment, whilst gaining vital skills to complement their studies.

Sam Harris, a Level 3 IT student at Dearne Valley College completed a work placement with the company and impressed his employers so much that he was offered a part-time job with them. He said: "My work placement helped me to figure out my future, and I was able to speak with other work placement students, some from Universities studying on the course I was interested in, which helped me to decide upon a Software Engineering degree at University. I was also offered part-time work with the company, which gives me a real foot in the door."

Luke Day, who is a technical director at PointSolutions, has gone from student to business colleague, having previously studied at Dearne Valley College to gain his IT qualifications. Along with his team at PointSolutions, Luke is now working with the college to implement its new SharePoint based internal communications system.

Dave Bailey, marketing director at PointSolutions said: "PointSolutions is a growing business that likes to nurture local talent. We provide a number of SharePoint based solutions for the education sector, including intranets and HR systems. Sam and the other students from DVC have been given real-world experience of the software business environment and have been able to contribute to the actual system that we are providing for the college.

"As a result of the placement scheme we have now provided both part-time and one full-time position within the business and we are very much looking forward to a fresh intake of students."

Martin Harrison, principal and chief executive at Dearne Valley College, added: "It's fantastic that our work with PointSolutions is going from strength to strength, and that the work placements our students are taking part in are having a valuable impact on their education and employment opportunities. Work placements are an integral part of the full-time courses that we offer, cementing the knowledge and skills that our learners are gaining at College, whilst providing them with a real insight into working environments."
