News: Plans for Rotherham Station redevelopment submitted

By

Network Rail has submitted detailed plans for the multi million pound redevelopment of Rotherham Central Railway Station in the town centre. Working with architects, Aedas the plans include replacing the existing building with a modern, lightweight entrance structure which will include a new passenger waiting lounge, ticket office and retail area. Extensive improvements to the platforms, access, car parking and CCTV are also planned. The architectural design focuses on creating a building of iconic character, incorporating a dynamic roof "with a repetitive profile which pays homage to the local industrial heritage." The design also allows for the practical installation of solar panels. The station redevelopment is seen as key to the Rotherham Renaissance programme and should be a flagship scheme providing a state of the art 21st century facility for the people of Rotherham.
