News: Newburgh to provide precision parts for 1000mph supercar

By

High-tech precision engineering sub-contractor Newburgh Engineering has been chosen to provide precision parts for the Bloodhound SSC supercar. The Bloodhound SSC aims to break the world land speed record by achieving the supersonic speed of 1,000 mph, which will require contribution from the world’s leading engineering and technology companies. The design and production team from Bloodhound SSC visited Newburgh Engineering, based at Templeborough in Rotherham, to assess its facilities and take a factory tour, with a view to using their specialist skills and equipment. Newburgh Engineering was subsequently invited to become a product sponsor. This will see the company providing precision components and assemblies for the internal assemblies and chassis elements of the supercar. David Greenan, operations director at Newburgh Engineering, said: "We were delighted to become product sponsors of the Bloodhound SSC. As this is a high precision project, we have the expertise and equipment to ensure the absolute product integrity of the project. At the speeds being attempted by the car, high quality precision components are essential and our team of qualified engineered are looking forward to demonstrating their skills." The project is led by Richard Noble OBE and the car will be driven by Wing Commander Andy Green OBE who set the current record of 763mph (1228kmh) at the controls of ThrustSSC on 15th October 1997. Building a car quicker than a fighter jet is not, however, the primary goal of the project. Rather, it is to inspire future generations to take up careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics by showcasing these subjects in the most exciting way possible. Newburgh Engineering works with several schools and colleges in the South Yorkshire area and will be using its involvement in the world land speed record to inspire students about the career opportunities within engineering.
