News: Council backs steel action group plans

By

Rotherham Borough Council Leader Councillor Roger Stone has joined forces with steel community leaders from across the UK to launch a major programme of action in support of employment in the UK steel industry. The plan, endorsed at a summit meeting in Rotherham, is running under the slogan, "A Fair Deal for UK Steel", and will include a major promotional campaign to maximise the use of Corus and other UK Steel and metals in major public sector building contracts, with a target consumption of up to £1billion per annum. A nationwide exercise with Corus to reduce their business rate burden and improve the company's cost-base in the short and longer term is also proposed. A co-ordinated effort with Corus, the steel and manufacturing trade unions and training agencies, colleges and workbased learning providers to boost training and skills levels to be ready for the upturn is a further proposal. Councillor Stone met with leaders from Redcar & Cleveland, Bolsover, North Lincolnshire, North Lanarkshire and Corby whose communities have been affected by Corus decisions. The group now plans to set up high level meetings with Corus and the All Parliamentary Steel Group of MPs.
