News: Ice sports - the science and technology

By

The Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) are hosting a talk from Professor Kristan Bromley, former skeleton bobsleigh World Cup champion and co-founder of Bromley Performance Sports. Kristan will talk about the science, technology and tactics behind ice sports and in particular the Skeleton Bobsleigh. Behind the scenes Kristan and his brother Richard, both engineers, run Bromley Performance Sports from the Advanced Manufacturing Park in Rotherham, a company set up to carry out research and development for ice sports. The company has become one of the world's top sled developers, winning 40 medals at European, World and Olympic level. Before the last season began, Bromley Performance Sports were close to confirming contracts to supply 70% of the nations in this year's World Cup skeleton bob competitions. Bromley is nicknamed "Doctor Ice," as he earned a PhD form the University of Nottingham for his thesis entitled: "Factors affecting the performance of skeleton bobsleds." The talk is due to take place at the Holiday Inn Royal Victoria in Sheffield on April 30 at 6pm.
