News: 30 years of success in Rotherham for Philford Design

By

They started life supplying conveyor machines to the mining industry from an old Methodist chapel in Rotherham. Now Philford Design Engineers is celebrating its 30th anniversary as one of the UK's leading specialist engineering companies.

Philford now supplies many of the UK's leading industrial companies – including UK Coal, Drax Power Station, British Waterways and Salt Union – from two 18,000 sq ft premises in Aldwarke near Rotherham.

Philford designed and manufactured the majority of the equipment for the redevelopment of Hatfield Colliery and, last year, won several contracts to supply machinery for developing new mines in Wales.

Philford production manager Steve Horsfield said: "It's been a long journey to get where we are today and we're really delighted to have been supporting British industry since 1979.

"We're proud of our history but our success comes from adapting and looking to the future.

"There are huge changes taking place in the power industry and mining, and the development of renewable energy sources and investment in rail transportation offer major opportunities for us, which can only be good for the region."

Philford was founded by mining engineers David Phillips and Alan Beresforde – the company name is a blend of the two surnames. In 2000, David's son Michael Phillips took over as Managing Director, and the company retains a real sense of itself as a family business.

It employs three sets of brothers, as well as a father-and-son team, and prides itself on nurturing skills and talent in the region through its comprehensive apprenticeship scheme.

To mark the 30th anniversary, and with a view to expanding into overseas markets, Philford is reinvesting in its website, which will be relaunched in August. Designed and built by Sheffield brand communications agency D4, the site will be translated into Polish initially with a Czech version following later in the year.
