News: £2m investment in Rotherham paying off for Beatson Clark

By

An excellent feature in Packaging News highlights the £2m investment by glass manufacturers Beatson Clark to expand its Rotherham facilities in order to boost its product offering.

Last year, the company identified a UK demand for clear glass jars and bottles and submitted plans for a 168 sq m extension at the glassworks at Greasbourough Road in January.

The new line takes 65 tonnes of glass from the furnace each day and started producing clear glass containers in May with a capacity of some 75 million glass containers a year.

The firm has a turnover of £51m and now has a total output up to 500m units, or 76,800 tonnes of clear and brown glass a year.

The new line is proving to be a successful investment and Beatson Clark has already sold half of the extra capacity it has gained, most of which is expected to come on line in the second half of the year.

Lynn Sidebottom, Beatson Clark sales and marketing manager, told the magazine: "It's been quite a large project and a significant investment for us.

"Because we are targeting niche, specialist projects, the economic situation has slowed things down.

"We've been successful in picking up business in the UK and targeted business on the continent. As a small volume manufacturer, there are some good opportunities despite the downturn."
