News: AMRC goes down under

By

The Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) in Rotherham is set to be replicated on the other side of the globe, in Victoria, Australia.

Swinburne University of Technology and aerospace industry leader Boeing have teamed up to establish the Australian Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AusAMRC) in Melbourne.

The new research centre will be modelled on the successful partnership between The University of Sheffield and Boeing based on the Advanced Manufacturing Park in Rotherham.

The inaugural head of the AusAMRC, Professor Beynon was previously The University of Sheffield's Head of Mechanical Engineering and he told the Swinburne University Magazine how the UK's AMRC had flourished and is now larger than the department that spawned it.

He also discussed how the centre works with the entire supply chain, upstream and downstream, of a target process.

Professor Beynon told the magazine: "By involving a line of companies at the beginning of a project, the technology developed is optimised for application along the whole supply chain. This speeds up adoption. Industry knows the technology is coming and can more easily adapt and prepare. Unfortunately, it's not uncommon in research to produce a technology that the industry is not ready for, does not know how to handle, and may cause problems downstream."

Earlier this month, Boeing signed a MoU with several leading Danish firms and institutions in Herning to explore the development of a branch in Denmark.
