News: Dormer lends a helping hand to budding engineers

By

Budding engineers from across the Sheffield City Region are receiving a helping hand with their training, thanks to Rotherham-based Dormer Tools.

The Sheffield Engineering Centre has joined forces with the leading engineering firm to create the "Dormer Suite", a new machining facility for students, at the centre's base in Attercliffe.

The suite, which is due to open in January 2010, houses a range of industry standard machining equipment, as well as a selection of state-of-the-art tools donated to the centre by Dormer.

Students will also benefit from training seminars, literature and support from the company, as well as a donation to spend on tools from Dormer's online store.

Roger Davis-Green, engineering centre manager at Sheffield Engineering Centre, said: "We're delighted to be teaming up with Dormer Tools. We believe that the best way for our students to learn about their trade is to work alongside professional engineers and Dormer fit the bill perfectly.

"It's a local company which has grown to become a world-leading brand and our students can't wait to get started."

Training will take place at both the engineering centre and Dormer's base at the Advanced Manufacturing Park (AMP) in Rotherham.

Matt Johnson, machining applications engineer at Dormer, said: "Sheffield Engineering Centre is a fantastic resource for the city.

"At Dormer, we believe that nurturing the talents of young people is crucial in securing the future of engineering, and training facilities like the Sheffield Engineering Centre play a huge part in this."
