News: Xeros to make world's first green washer in Rotherham

By

An almost waterless laundry cleaning system is the latest world-beating innovation to be associated with the UK's only dedicated Advanced Manufacturing Park (AMP) in Rotherham.

Xeros Ltd is developing the world's first "virtually waterless" washing machines at its new environmentally efficient unit at Evolution @ the AMP. The park is a joint venture between Yorkshire Forward and UK Coal, while the Evolution scheme has been developed by UK Strategic Partnership.

The technology has been developed over the past 30 years by textile chemistry professor Stephen Burkinshaw at the University of Leeds.

The decision to move operations from laboratories in Leeds to the Park was made as Xeros focuses on discussions with commercial partners in a bid to break into the global laundry products market - expected to reach around $50 billion this year.

Xeros CEO Bill Westwater said: "This is an exciting development in our plan to offer the world a greener washing system and gives us an impressive location to demonstrate the technology to potential partners.

"We have received tremendous support from the team at the AMP and hope that working alongside industry innovators and international brands at the Park will open up new opportunities. We are looking forward to launching our first machines from Evolution.

"The new washers will re-use polymer beads which act as a cleaning agent to remove dirt from clothes. The Xeros process saves up to 90 per cent of water compared to conventional washing machines."

Investment manager Pippa Hedley, of South Yorkshire's Advanced Manufacturing & Metals (AMM) team, said: "Xeros's decision to move to the AMP is further evidence that the development is the right calibre to attract world-beating innovators."

Acting for Evolution owner UK Strategic Partnership, Knight Frank successfully negotiated the lease of the 2,427 sq ft unit. Yorkshire Forward provided funding towards the cost of the fit-out for the new unit, while additional grants for company development have been secured through South Yorkshire Investment Fund (SYIF).

Knight Frank's Rebecca Schofield said: "Xeros is the latest company to recognise the business value to be gained from moving to this prestigious location. The company joins AtraNova, Dormer Tools, Arrow Technical and Struers at the Evolution development, where the remaining units ranging from 2,200-27,000 sq ft of high quality space are available for immediate occupation."
