News: Work begins on new homes in Rotherham
Building work on a £1m housing scheme in Rawmarsh, Rotherham has officially started.
The Council's local ward councillor, Shaun Wright, led the developers and local representatives in starting the work at Mahon Avenue last week.
Cllr Wright said: "I am delighted that work has now begun to build these much needed affordable homes in Rawmarsh for local people currently on our housing waiting list.
"The authority chose major housing association, Home Group, to develop the homes for us and they have come up with a high quality, energy efficient housing scheme that will minimise running costs for the new residents."
The new homes will replace bungalows that no longer meet modern building standards and which were demolished by the council in 2009.
When completed later this year, the new scheme will comprise seven two and four-bedroom family houses available for rent. The site benefits from being close to Rotherham town centre with its various shopping centres, transport links and other local amenities.
Ian Clyde, Development Director for Home Group's Central Region added: "This is the second Home development for the area and we are making excellent progress helping to regenerate the Rawmarsh neighbourhood in partnership with the Council. We aim to finish the scheme later this year."
Strata Construction of Doncaster was chosen to construct the new homes and builders are now on site.
The scheme will cost just under £1 million including funding support from the Homes and Communities Agency.
