Rotherham construction specialists, the Horbury Group is playing a vital part in the development of five state-of-the-art community fire stations in Northumberland and Durham, in a contract worth £1m.

Horbury Building Systems, one of the largest drywall contractors in the UK, has been appointed by main contractor Shepherd Construction to complete work on the project, part of the £60 million North East Fire and Rescue Authorities (NEFRA) Private Finance Initiative (PFI).

Titan Ceilings will also complete work on the scheme, which is receiving an additional £42 million funding from Communities and Local Government.

The project will see the design, construction, finance and operation of the stations in the North East of England for the Tyne and Wear, Durham and Darlington and Northumberland Fire and Rescue Authorities, as well as a headquarters based in West Hartford.

Trevor Wragg, managing director of the Horbury Group, said: "The Horbury Group has vast experience working on public sector developments and this latest addition to our portfolio is a fantastic example of the group's diversity.

"The new developments will play a key role in improving community facilities in the region, allowing the fire authorities to proactively work with local people on fire safety and prevention. This is something we are delighted to be a part of."
