News: Elevation Recruitment Group becomes employee-owned

Rotherham-based recruitment specialist, Elevation Recruitment has become an employee-owned business.

Formerly part of the Horbury Group, Elevation has grown to become the largest independent recruitment partner in Yorkshire. Based at offices in Moorgate, Rotherham, the company was acquired by newly formed parent company Elevation Recruitment Group following a six-figure management buyout in 2014.

The business ownership has now transferred into an employee ownership trust (EOT), with employees set to instantly benefit from the future success of the business.

All previous shareholders and directors will remain within the business in exactly the same capacity, with the day-to-day operations remaining the same and they will continue to support the Group’s long standing client base and ongoing growth plans. The gorup added that its Senior Management Team have ongoing interests within the organisation and are fully committed to the long-term future of the business.

News: Horbury's Skills Bank boost

Rotherham-based Horbury Group is investing in its staff after successfully applying to a regional skills scheme that helps employers boost productivity.

With its headquarters in the Moorgate area, Horbury Group combines a number of subsidiaries that specialise in areas including joinery, ceilings, dry lining and health and safety training.

The company is running a bespoke management development programme part funded by Sheffield City Region Skills Bank.

So far, 38 staff have completed one or more modules on a training programme that is managed and delivered by The Sheffield College. The course module subjects include leadership and management, communication and interpersonal skills and time management.

News: Horbury Group secures £4m contract

Horbury Facades, part of the Rotherham based Horbury Group, has secured a contract with Sir Robert McAlpine worth £4m to deliver a "through-wall" solution on a new multi-occupancy residential development in Manchester.

Forming part of the £80m regeneration of Salford's Chapel Street area, the scheme on Gore Street, Manchester, consists of 375 private rent homes, including 364 apartments and 11 townhouses, split across three blocks that range between 22 and 13 storeys in height.

Working in collaboration with OMI Architects and SRM project delivery team, Horbury Facades is installing a complex horizontal plank rainscreen system, featuring multi-coloured aluminium panels incorporating complex balcony penetration details on the three residential blocks.

Horbury Facades is also installing an SFS substrate utilizing an EOS framing system and non-combustible Siniat weather defence board. The scheme is set to be completed by 2020.

Eleven managers have recently completed the Building for the Future professional development programme.

The programme was designed and delivered by The Sheffield College in partnership with Hughes Training Solutions Ltd.

The training aimed to meet the future business needs of the Horbury Group, and the construction sector, by developing current managers.

The programme included parts of the Institute of Leadership and Management Leadership and Management Level 5 course.

Rotherham-based property maintenance provider Horbury Property Services has won a contract with Chesterfield Royal Hospital in Derbyshire to provide planned maintenance and refurbishment services.

News: Horbury Group in "Bangers and Cash" challenge

Horbury Group, the Rotherham-based construction service company, has revealed its exciting new design for its rally car bonnet as part of the Roundabout Charity's "Bangers and Cash" challenge.

The bonnet, which was designed by celebrated artist Ann-Marie Byrne, will be displayed during August in the Winter Gardens in Sheffield.

The eye-catching design summarises the whole trip, with half of the bonnet depicting Sheffield with landmark buildings, such as the Crucible and Lyceum and the other half portraying Monaco and the Monte Carlo casino, with a classic racing car in the foreground.

Trevor Wragg, CEO of Horbury Group, who is taking part in the challenge in September alongside chief financial officer Gavin Leverett, said: "It is such a striking piece of artwork, so bright and colourful, which represents the journey that we will be taking. We're really excited to be taking part in this challenge and it is fantastic to be doing it to help such a great cause."

Trevor and Gavin will be joining over 20 other South Yorkshire companies in an exciting four-day road trip from Sheffield to Monte Carlo in a vehicle they have purchased for less than £650. In their case it will be an 18 year old Jaguar, similar to one that Trevor owned in the early days of his career.

On September 21, the Horbury team will set off in their banger on the 1,219 mile trip, in a bid to raise as much sponsor money as possible for the youth homeless charity. The stylish bonnets from all the companies taking part will then be auctioned off to raise even more money for Roundabout.

The idea of this unique fundraising event came from Goo Design's Matt Cockayne, a local Sheffield artist.

Ben Keegan, CEO at Roundabout, said: "Every day we are seeing increasing numbers of young people facing homelessness and our drop-in advice service, near the Winter Gardens at 22 Union Street, relies on generous donations from businesses and the public.

Rotherham construction group, Horbury, has secured two new contracts to provide property services to housing associations across the UK.

The subsidiary has secured approval on the Northern Housing Consortium Framework as the number one provider of passive fire safety services to its member organisations across the North of England.

The contract, which started in May, with the potential to run for four years, will see Horbury Property Services providing fire door and fire compartmentation inspection and remediation services.

The consortium is a membership organisation which represents the views of housing organisations in the North of England. Its members are made up of local authorities, ALMOs and associations that provide social housing for tenants in the North.

Horbury Facades, part of the Horbury Group based in Rotherham, has secured a contract to install an inspirational brick and terracotta façade on Highwood Garden Terrace, part of the West Grove residential development on Elephant Park in London.

Horbury Facades is a specialist rainscreen cladding contractor offering full specification, installation and maintenance services.

Elephant Park is the new £2.3bn multi-phase regeneration of the former Heygate Estate based in Elephant & Castle, and delivered by Lendlease. Highwood Garden Terrace is a ten storey mansion style building containing 85 homes, situated on Elephant Park’s West Grove residential development.

Working alongside Lendlease, Horbury Facades is installing a Brickslip Corium façade in grey and red in assorted textures. Glazed terracotta tiles in seven varying shades that gradate from buff to a dark red, are also being fixed onto playfully arranged infills in a staggered bond of differing lengths.

The company has also rendered the walls and soffits of the balconies situated along the northwest and east sides of the building.

The design of the structure, created by AHMM architects, is inspired by traditional London mansion blocks and incorporates a number of tiers where the building steps back to offer terraces to many of the homes. The new build homes "fuse diverse historical influences, including the grandeur of the late Victorian and Art Deco periods, with a thoroughly modern approach. Each building has its own character, while retaining a timeless and classic aesthetic."

Two subsidiaries have secured new construction contracts for the Rotherham-based Horbury Group.

From its headquarters in the Moorgate area, the group combines a number of subsidiaries that specialise in areas including joinery, ceilings, dry lining and health and safety training.

Horbury Facades has secured a contract to detail, supply and install an innovative high gloss rainscreen façade on the new Vita Student building in Manchester.

The student accommodation, based on Nobel Way, is part of Circle Square, the new £750m multi-phase redevelopment of the former Manchester BBC site that will be used for commercial, residential and leisure purposes.

Working alongside 5Plus Architects, Horbury Facades is currently installing the high gloss rainscreen panels, which were specified in Black Metallic (888), on the ground and first floor of the accommodation block.

Adrian Storey, general manager at Horbury Facades, said: "The Vita Student building has an extremely complex façade, especially because of its intricate geometric design at ground floor level. Our team is very experienced in installing challenging facades of this type and its inspired use of high gloss panels mean it will be one of the most innovative and eye-catching buildings within the new Circle Square development."

The company has also installed a Sotech Optima FC concealed fixing system on the student accommodation block and two other buildings that make up phase one of the development, which is due for completion in March 2018.

Working closely with the asset management team, Horbury Property Services has developed a bespoke solution to enhance fire safety for its residents.

News: Horbury lined up for car park contract

Horbury Facades, part of the Rotherham based Horbury Group, is detailing, supplying and installing an "inspirational" new façade as part of the £107m Bridge Street Quarter Regeneration Scheme in Warrington.

Working on behalf of main contractor for the Bridge Street car park project, I&H Brown, and alongside Muse Developments, Horbury Facades' skilled team is installing an intricate rain screen backing rail system to stepped light steel vertical cassette panels and then carrying out the complex task of installing individually coloured terracotta tiles to meet the architects' design specification and colour aspirations.

Designed by architects Leach Rhodes Walker, the terracotta tiled façade, features stone stair towers with complementary granite at ground level. It features an intricate design with tiles supplied by Taylor Maxwell in four colours: pearl white, basalt, gold and black.

The tiles are installed on the main entrance and rear elevation of the car-park and were complemented by an inset cassette. Compared to assembling multiple panels on site, the cassette system allowed the terracotta tiles to be installed up to 50% faster. Horbury Facades is also installing a feature Bullnose aluminium capping at the roofline to all three stair cores for enhanced aesthetics and weather performance.

At ground level, Horbury Facades is supplying and installing a granite rain screen façade system, as well as adding a full height attractive exterior of natural sand stone to the three stair cores. Stone supplied by Tiles International Ltd complements the same façade of the new town hall which is a stone's throw from the car-park. The company also installed feature panels, again using the cassette system, to the front and rear of the building. The whole project is being completed within a 20 week period.

Paul Rowley, project manager for I&H Brown Ltd, said: "“This was a major redevelopment, involving the complex removal of an existing car park building and construction of a much larger eight storey structure on the same site, with an attractive new aesthetic that fitted in with the larger regeneration project.

"The terracotta tiles play an important part in the look and feel of this building close to the centre of Warrington. The Horbury Facades team had the skill and expertise to be able to deliver a facade that met the project's requirements exactly."

News: Horbury named on £400m NHS framework

Rotherham construction group, Horbury, has been successful in bidding to be part of a framework agreement to provide hard services to NHS Shared Business Services (SBS) for a four year period.

The newly created subsidiary, Horbury Property Services, will provide fire door inspection and remedial, building fabric maintenance, flooring services, ironmongery, partitioning and re-lamping services. The framework will cover NHS facilities across the whole of England and Wales and is valued at around £400m.

This is the third recent framework agreement secured by Horbury Property Services, which was selected as part of an approved two year framework agreement with Leeds Beckett University to provide flooring services for its Headingley and city centre estates in Leeds and by Fusion 21, a national procurement organisation and social enterprise, for providing passive fire services.

News: Horbury has it covered for Leeds Beckett University

Horbury Property Services, part of the Rotherham-based Horbury Group, has secured a two year contract with Leeds Beckett University to provide flooring refurbishment services as part of a framework agreement, after winning a competitive tender.

The contract covers the University's two estates in Leeds City Centre and Headingley and involves refurbishment of flooring, as required, for lecture theatres, classrooms, offices and communal areas.

Richard Sutton, general manager at Horbury Property Services, said: "Flooring refurbishment is an important part of our portfolio of services and can make a huge difference to the appeal of an establishment. We're delighted to secure this latest contract with Leeds Beckett University and look forward to working in partnership with them to enhance the aesthetics of their two campuses."

Darren Wood, category manager at Leeds Beckett University, added: "Refurbishment of flooring is an essential part of our planned maintenance programme. We're pleased to be working with Horbury Property Services through the framework agreement as part of maintaining high standards in the aesthetics and performance of floorcoverings in both our campuses."

As well as flooring refurbishment, Horbury Property Services provides a full range of works, which can form part of planned preventative maintenance programmes. This includes inspection, installation, repair and maintenance of fire doors, joinery works, fire stopping, sealing, fire compartmentation, fire alarm and emergency light testing, portable appliance testing, electrical testing and installation work, building fabric repairs as well as external cladding and render repairs.

From its headquarters in the Moorgate area, the Horbury Group combines a number of subsidiaries that specialise in areas including joinery, ceilings, dry lining and health and safety training.

The Group, which has a 25-year trading history and a workforce of over 1,000, launched the property services arm following demand from clients by creating a dedicated business that offers vital services in existing property estates.

Since launching earlier this year, the division has appointed Mark Allen as senior estimator.

News: Horbury builds portfolio with property services business

Rotherham construction group, Horbury, has established a new trading company dedicated to providing facilities management, maintenance and refurbishment, called Horbury Property Services.

From its headquarters in the Moorgate area, the group combines a number of subsidiaries that specialise in areas including joinery, ceilings, dry lining and health and safety training.

Expansion at Horbury is backed by £2.5m from the Business Growth Fund (BGF) and a £6m funding package from HSBC. The finance secured in 2014 was to support a move to tender for larger, and a greater quantity of, projects and significantly increase its workforce.

The Group, which has a 25-year trading history and a workforce of over 1,000, has responded to demand from clients by creating a dedicated business that offers vital services in existing property estates.

Heading up the new division is Richard Sutton who has been recruited as general manager. Richard has almost 30 years' experience in property services, including senior management positions for a large regional mechanical and electrical (M&E) contractor and most recently as Head of Service at Yorkshire Housing.

Richard (pictured, left), said: "I am looking forward to developing this exciting new business and securing new opportunities in the commercial, local authority, education and health sectors for our wide range of property services. We will also be creating a number of jobs within the new business and have already been successful in securing inclusion on a major national facilities management framework."

The new Horbury Property Services business, which will be based in Rotherham, provides a full range of services, which should be part of planned preventative maintenance programmes, including inspection, installation, repair and maintenance of fire doors, joinery works, fire stopping, sealing, fire compartmentation, fire alarm and emergency light testing, portable appliance testing, electrical testing and installation work, building fabric repairs as well as external cladding and render repairs.

Sutton added: "There is vital work to be done to ensure buildings are safe to occupy and compliant, through regular inspections, repair works, refurbishment and planned preventative maintenance. We'll be working closely with building owners, landlords, main contractors and local authorities to make sure their buildings are compliant, operationally efficient and that their risks are reduced to a minimum."

News: Horbury builds for the future with apprentices

Rotherham construction group, Horbury, is launching a partnership with the Sheffield College to recruit and train new apprentices to support business growth.

From its headquarters in the Moorgate area, the group combines a number of subsidiaries that specialise in areas including joinery, ceilings, dry lining, health and safety training, and recruitment.

With the new apprenticeship levy being introduced by the government this April, the Horbury Academy is being set up to deliver a comprehensive apprenticeship programme that attracts new talent to the company.

Due to start in May 2017, the partnership will see the launch of traineeships and apprenticeships in joinery, plastering, dry lining, site supervision, and other technical and professional construction disciplines.

The Apprenticeship Levy is a change in the way the Government funds apprenticeships in England. It requires all UK employers, with a pay bill over £3m each year, to make an investment in apprenticeships. Firms are then set to benefit from this investment by training apprentices with control of apprenticeship funding put in the hands of employers.

A subsidiary of Rotherham construction group, Horbury, has completed over two miles of plasterboard partitions at a prestigious office development in Leeds.

From its headquarters in the Moorgate area, the group combines a number of subsidiaries that specialise in areas including joinery, ceilings, dry lining and health and safety training.

Central Square, Leeds' first speculative office scheme in eight years, was recently handed over by Wates Construction following the completion of a £100m new build scheme for owners, M&G Real Estate and development partner, Marrico LLP.

Designed by DLA Design, the new building comprises 220,000 sq ft of flexible Grade A office space, 30,000 sq ft of retail and leisure provision, 128 car parking spaces, accessible public thoroughfares, a ninth floor sky garden with city views, a central atrium and winter garden.

Titan Interior Solutions, acquired by Horbury in 1999, managed the installation and co-ordination of over 215,000 sq ft of bespoke suspended ceilings and C' profiles throughout 14 floors.

The package, worth around £3.5m, saw Titan fit 21,000 sq ft of external Soffit Insulation and decorative render, internal aluminium glazed Screens and doors, feature columns, balcony fascias and a triangulated feature ceiling, two miles of plasterboard partitions (finished to receive decoration), 21,000 sq ft of MF ceilings, over one mile of plasterboard blind boxes and two and a half miles of plasterboard bulkheads, margins and trims.

Horbury said that the programme spanned 35 weeks with a work force peaking at 70 operatives. With just in time deliveries and a very tight site, the project required extensive co-ordination and expert logistics management.

Sam Jones, asset manager at M&G Real Estate, said: "Central Square is delivering much-needed office space to satisfy demand for high quality, well located accommodation in the heart of the business district of Leeds and within easy reach of key transport interchanges. The specification of our investment was as critical as the location so we have ensured the building we deliver is right for the occupier community we sought to attract."

News: Clock in for Rotherham Hospice

Rotherham Hospice is giving every employee in town the opportunity to put in a few hours - or even a whole day - without having to step away from their desk or factory floor.

The only adult hospice in Rotherham for the people of Rotherham, Rotherham Hospice is an independent charity and must raise significant sums of money each year in order to pay for the quality care provided free of charge to patients, their families and carers. The charity needs £5m a year with £2.2m needed to be raised each year through voluntary support.

It is calling on every company in Rotherham to Clock In For The Hospice on September 9 - its 20th anniversary.

Staff can work in the virtual sense for the hospice - by donating a portion of that day's wages.

Christopher Duff, chief executive at Rotherham Hospice, said: "This is our biggest ever campaign and will be a massive fundraiser for us. We aim to raise £100,000 to help fund the work of the hospice and in particular our patient and family support services, which provide bereavement and carer support and counselling.

"Demand for these services is growing hugely, but this year, provision will cost £125K and we don't have other funding to support it.

"Payroll giving is a brilliantly simple idea. People don't have to down tools and walk through our doors to be able to join our volunteers. All they have to do is donate some of their net September 9 earnings. Their employers give us the amount that would have been paid in tax and National Insurance."

Inspiration for the Clock In For The Hospice campaign comes from a March fundraiser which saw two Rotherham businesses raise a colossal £28,378 in just one day.

A total of 102 workers across Horbury Group, JB Doors at Parkgate and its sister companies Alluguard and the Olive Tree restaurant, gave up a minimum of two hours and a maximum of a full day of pay during their Virtual Day Of Working.

Bosses were so impressed they made huge donations too.

Darren Baker, MD of JB Doors, was so touched that all 30 staff across his companies gave up at least two hours of pay, he gave a further £2,500. He said. "I hope every company in Rotherham signs up to this. Every single one of us might need the hospice one day."

Trevor Wragg, founder and MD of construction industry interiors specialists, Horbury Group, gave a day of his pay and doubled the £9,100 raised by his staff. Company chairman David Williams, a hospice volunteer for several years, donated a further £5,000, bringing Horbury's total to a staggering £23,378.12.

"Our commercial manager Alex Fletcher came up with the idea. We have supported charities for 23 years and this was the easiest fundraiser we have ever staged," he said. "All we had to do was wield a pen."

Horbury Group employee Alex, a married father of two who gave up half a day of pay, said: "I would never have donated the same amount for a charity collection or a sponsored event. But I knew it would be coming out of my salary, made allowances and my family didn't suffer at all. I'm proud to have come up with the idea."

Rotherham Hospice plans to do even more over the next 20 years as leaders from the local business community are set to work as the charity strives for excellence.

Chief executive at Rotherham Hospice, Christopher Duff has raided his contacts book and pulled together a dynamic eight-strong squad. It includes Pyronix boss Julie Kenny CBE, Trevor Wragg, MD of Horbury Group, recruitment boss Nick Cragg and Vince Middleton OBE, the MD of Newburgh Engineering. They are joined by Nick Alexander, MD of Garnett Dickinson Group, Jamie Sharp, former MD of steel giant Outokumpu in Sheffield, IT boss and Sheffield Eagles chief executive John Whaling, and Darren Baker, MD of JB Doors.

Duff (pictured, far right) said: "Our primary role at the hospice is to care for the people of Rotherham when they or their families are coping with terminal illnesses, but we have to run as a business and we strive for excellence in that arena, just as other companies do.

"The hospice celebrates 20 years of excellence in care this year. These people, some of the town's most successful entrepreneurs and professionals, are pooling their experience and knowledge to help me drive it to best in class so we can do even more in the next 20 years.

"They are sharp-minded people who solve problems from a local perspective. They bring a vast amount of contacts to the table.They are incredibly busy people and I am grateful and proud that they are giving up their time and energy for the hospice."

Nick Cragg, founder of national recruitment company Stafforce and founder and chairman of investment company Nicholas Associates Group (pictured, second left), added: "I got involved because I want to be a part of an extremely valuable organisation determined to excel on a regional and national level.

The "Dream Team" has already embarked on a project to benchmark Rotherham’s hospice with three others in towns with similar demographics and economic factors. Data is being analysed to identify where improvements can be made and find a way of ensuring a greater percentage of residents can access hospice care.

Duff concludes: "Each year around 2,500 residents of the Rotherham borough die. Most would prefer to die in their home or in the hospice and we are proud to say we support over 700 in their last wish. This is a remarkably high number any hospice would be proud of and we are determined to do more. We will achieve this by building on the strong foundations we have created in the last 20 years and by forging strong links with the town's business community.

"We hope other companies will join us on the journey as we harness ideas, energy, services and money."
