News: Rotherham students making their mark with a tenner

By

Students from St Bernard's Catholic High School in Rotherham have launched their own market stalls selling healthy treats and snacks to students and staff, after taking up Peter Jones' challenge of turning £10 into a profit, as part of Enterprise UK's Make Your Mark with a Tenner campaign.

From baking buns, running a milkshake bar and making extra special hot chocolate treats, right through to selling fruit kebabs, the students are developing a whole range of products that meet the needs of fellow students. Profits from the initiative will be used to support the School's Good Shepherd Fund and Sports Hall.

Creating a hive of tenner activity students are also busking in school, holding their very own live lounge gigs and car washing.

Maria Rock, Associate Headteacher from St. Bernard's Catholic High School, said: "The school has a real buzz about it as students develop their enterprising skills for the tenner campaign. The activities that the students have chosen to run really do bring enterprise to life, from the sound of buskers demonstrating their talent through to the aromas from tasty treats.

"Overall the initiative is proving to be a real success – students are using their talents, working on products that they and their fellow students enjoy and learning first hand about what it takes to run and drive a business.

"Knowing that the funds are going to two very good causes makes this campaign even better."

Enterprise UK's Head of Region for Yorkshire & Humber, Jane Walton said: "It's great to hear about the enterprising ideas developed by students at St. Bernard’s Catholic High School in support of our Make Your Mark with a Tenner campaign. They have shown how understanding their market can reap rewards, I’m sure that these entrepreneurial qualities will lead to profits."
